== Personality == Yami Marik embodies pure malevolence, cruelty, and insanity. Born from Marik's darker emotions, he exhibits no empathy and thrives on causing pain and suffering. He murdered his father without hesitation, sought to eliminate Odion for hindering his existence, and threatened Ishizu for opposing him. Unlike Marik, who harbored a personal vendetta against the Pharaoh, Yami Marik's only goals are to inflict suffering and assert his individuality as the "true" Marik. In the English dub, he shares Marik's ambition to usurp the Pharaoh’s power and dominate the world. In his final moments, he attempts to persuade Marik to unite with him for world domination, though this is likely manipulation to escape his predicament. Yami Marik is intensely sadistic, designing his Deck around torture-themed cards and using shadow powers to physically harm opponents during duels. Despite his reliance on dark powers, he demonstrates strategic skill, adapting to situations, such as in his duel against Yami Yugi by combining ''Egyptian God Slime'' and ''Jam Defender'' to create an impenetrable defense. He exhibits reckless tendencies, particularly during the Virtual World arc, where he destroys critical systems, causing chaos for his own amusement. While valuing his own life, Yami Marik is not above masochism; he gleefully embraces pain during duels, such as when he laughs maniacally after experiencing damage from ''Gil Garth''<nowiki/>'s destruction. Yami Marik struggles with advanced technology, as shown during the Virtual World arc when he fails to operate a security passcode. Despite this, his Duel Disk poses no challenges to him. Yami Marik considers himself the "true" Marik and dissociates from the Ishtar family, referring to [[Ishizu Ishtar|Ishizu]] and his father as Marik's relatives, not his own. However, he recounts Marik's traumatic past as if it were his own experience, emphasizing the dominance of that trauma over Marik. In the Japanese version, he laughs at the retelling, delighting in the suffering that created him.
