==Biography== ===Early Life=== Otto Gunther Octavius was a bright and ambitious scientist who shared a close friendship with Curt Connors during their college years. While studying alongside Connors, Otto met Rosalie, a fellow student who pursued different academic interests. Their contrasting fields of study led to many engaging conversations, as they often tried to explain their respective disciplines to each other. Otto's affection for Rosalie deepened as he attempted to win her over, even resorting to reading poetry to charm her. The two eventually fell in love and got married. As Otto progressed in his career, he became acquainted with Oscorp founder Norman Osborn and established a friendly relationship with him. Otto also learned of Peter Parker through Connors, who regarded Peter as brilliant but prone to laziness. Otto's lifelong dream was to provide free, self-sustaining energy for the people of New York City. However, his life took a somber turn when Norman Osborn died under mysterious circumstances. Although most believed Norman’s death to be unrelated to Oscorp's secrets, Otto deduced that Norman had been the Green Goblin. ===Spider-Man 2=== ====Fusion Reactor==== =====Life’s Work===== Driven by his dream of creating a self-sustaining fusion reactor to deliver limitless energy to New York City, Otto dedicated years of his life to studying fusion technology. To aid in his experiments, he designed a set of advanced mechanical tentacles capable of withstanding extreme heat and performing delicate operations with precision. To ensure safety, Otto integrated a neural inhibitor chip into the tentacles, giving him full control over their operation. =====Funded by Oscorp===== While advancing his work, Otto sought financial backing for his ambitious project. Harry Osborn, representing Oscorp, saw potential in the reactor and agreed to fund Otto’s research, hoping it would bring significant profits to the company. =====Meeting Peter Parker===== The day before the reactor’s demonstration, Harry introduced Otto to Peter Parker, a young college student and aspiring scientist. Harry explained Peter’s admiration for Otto and his intention to write a paper on him. Initially dismissive, Otto reconsidered out of gratitude for Harry’s financial support. Once Harry left for a board meeting, Otto engaged Peter in a more personal discussion, recalling Connors’ praise for Peter’s intellect. During their conversation, Otto emphasized that intelligence was a gift meant to benefit humanity, not just a tool for personal achievement. He proudly introduced Peter to his fusion reactor, addressing Peter’s concerns by reassuring him of its safety. Otto and Rosalie expressed confidence in the project, with Rosie encouraging Peter to sleep soundly without worry. Later, over lunch, Otto debated with Rosalie about taking a rest before the presentation, revealing his relentless dedication to the reactor. Impressed by Peter’s understanding of scientific concepts such as the curve of quickest descent, Otto praised his knowledge. Rosie, sensing Peter’s reserved nature, inquired about his romantic life, prompting Otto to share how he won Rosalie’s heart through poetry. Otto advised Peter to consider poetry as a way to connect with others, showing his more personal and lighthearted side. The Birth of Doctor Octopus The day after Otto Octavius' meeting with Peter Parker, he conducted a public demonstration of his fusion reactor, attended by Peter and Harry Osborn. Otto began by showcasing his mechanical tentacles, emphasizing their importance in handling the reactor's volatile processes. He then presented the main attraction: the Fusion Reactor, which he powered using tritium, thanking Harry and Oscorp for their financial support. Initially, the reactor appeared successful, prompting his assistant Raymond to express optimism. However, as the reactor drew more power, the reaction destabilized. Despite clear signs of failure, Otto refused to shut it down, convinced it would stabilize in time. When Spider-Man arrived to intervene, Otto resisted, attacking him in defense of his work. Tragically, the demonstration resulted in collateral damage that killed Rosalie. The ensuing electrical surge from the reactor destroyed the inhibitor chip on Otto’s tentacles, leaving him unconscious and allowing the tentacles to seize control. ====Quest for the Fusion Reactor==== =====Attack on the Hospital===== Following the catastrophic demonstration, Otto was taken to Midtown Hospital for emergency treatment. Surgeons attempted to remove the mechanical tentacles from his body, unaware that the inhibitor chip was fried, leaving the tentacles in control. As the surgeons worked, the tentacles violently retaliated, killing everyone in the room. Awakening to the aftermath, Otto realized what had happened and screamed in anguish. Overwhelmed by grief and confusion, he retreated to an abandoned building with the tentacles. =====Criminal Ways===== Haunted by the failure of his experiment and the death of Rosalie, Otto fell into despair, cursing himself for creating the tentacles and blaming them for his suffering. Initially contemplating destruction, he considered drowning himself and the tentacles in the river. However, the tentacles, now with their own sentience, began whispering to him, exploiting his grief and wounded ego. The tentacles convinced Otto to reconsider the reactor's failure, suggesting that his calculations had been correct and that the failure was due to external interference. Torn between doubt and pride, Otto ultimately succumbed to the tentacles' manipulations. When they proposed turning to crime to fund the reactor's reconstruction, Otto hesitated, declaring he was not a criminal. But as the tentacles continued to prey on his vulnerabilities, he rationalized that abandoning his work would be the true crime. Succumbing fully, Otto resolved to complete what he had started, embracing the identity of Doctor Octopus. =====Robbery at the Bank===== Under the moniker "Doctor Octopus," a name given to him by the Daily Bugle, Otto Octavius decided to rob a bank to fund his experiments and rebuild his fusion reactor. Disguised in a large jacket to conceal his tentacles, he approached the bank and revealed his mechanical appendages by tearing off the vault door with ease. The commotion caused panic among the bank's occupants, including Peter Parker and his Aunt May, who were present at the scene. As Doctor Octopus began loading stolen money into bags, Spider-Man intervened, confronting him once again. The two engaged in a fierce battle, during which Doctor Octopus nearly crushed Spider-Man’s skull with his tentacles. However, Spider-Man managed to fight back, using his webbing to hurl objects at him. The confrontation spilled outside the bank, where Doctor Octopus hurled taxi doors at Spider-Man, eventually sending him crashing through a window. When the police arrived, Doctor Octopus seized a bystander as a hostage to prevent pursuit. Scaling a nearby building, he was stopped again by Spider-Man, who demanded he release Aunt May. Pretending to comply, Doctor Octopus dropped May, forcing Spider-Man to save her with his webbing. As Spider-Man pulled May to safety, Doctor Octopus smashed him against the building and escaped. Despite the chaos, Spider-Man ultimately thwarted Doctor Octopus' plan, leaving him without the stolen $2 million. =====Alliance with Harry Osborn===== Determined to continue his work on the reactor, Doctor Octopus constructed a larger and more advanced version. In need of additional tritium to power it, he approached Harry Osborn, who had funded his earlier experiments. Harry, however, refused, citing the catastrophic consequences of the initial attempt. Doctor Octopus, unwilling to accept defeat, used his tentacles to lift Harry over his house, threatening to drop him unless he complied. Reluctantly, Harry agreed to provide the tritium on one condition: Doctor Octopus had to capture Spider-Man alive. Harry suggested that Otto find Peter Parker, Spider-Man's photographer, to lead him to the hero. Doctor Octopus agreed to the terms and departed, warning Harry to prepare the tritium. =====Kidnapping Mary Jane===== Acting on Harry’s advice, Doctor Octopus tracked Peter Parker to a café where he was meeting Mary Jane Watson. Seeking to make an entrance, he hurled a car through the window and confronted Peter. Grabbing him with his tentacles, Doctor Octopus demanded that Peter locate Spider-Man. To strengthen his leverage, he seized Mary Jane and threatened her life, warning that Spider-Man must confront him or she would die. Doctor Octopus took Mary Jane to the Westside Market Clocktower, using the location as a trap to lure Spider-Man into a final confrontation. Waiting high above the city, he prepared for his inevitable clash with the wall-crawler. =====Train Fight===== After regaining his powers, Spider-Man confronted Doctor Octopus at the clocktower where Mary Jane was being held. Rejecting Doc Ock’s command to follow, Spider-Man engaged him in a fierce battle that spilled over onto a moving train. In the chaos, Doctor Octopus attempted a sneak attack, but Spider-Man countered, rescuing two passengers whom Doc Ock had thrown from the train. Doc Ock then crawled to the front of the train, smashed a window, and accelerated it to maximum speed before destroying the brake lever, rendering the train unstoppable. Mocking Spider-Man with a quip about having "a train to catch," he leaped onto a nearby building. Spider-Man heroically stopped the train, saving all the passengers but at great physical cost, leaving him exhausted. Seizing the opportunity, Doctor Octopus returned, incapacitating Spider-Man despite the passengers’ attempts to protect him, and delivered him unconscious to Harry Osborn. =====Obtaining the Tritium===== Doctor Octopus brought Spider-Man, bound in spiked metal fence wires, to Harry Osborn’s penthouse. After laying Spider-Man on a bed as instructed, Harry revealed the tritium stored in a safe. Doc Ock took the large quantity of tritium and left Harry to deal with Spider-Man as promised, escaping the penthouse to continue his experiments. =====Stopping the Fusion Reactor===== Back at his lair, Doctor Octopus used the stolen tritium to restart his fusion reactor, now larger and more unstable than ever. Refusing to release Mary Jane out of fear she might alert the authorities, Doc Ock focused on his work. However, Spider-Man arrived to save her. Though initially unaware of Spider-Man’s presence, his tentacles sensed the threat, alerting him to the hero’s approach. Furious that Harry Osborn had not killed Spider-Man, Doc Ock engaged in a brutal fight with the web-slinger. Spider-Man eventually incapacitated him by using an electric shock from the reactor's power cables. Regaining consciousness, Doc Ock saw Spider-Man attempting to shut down the reactor. The reactor's magnetic field, however, grew exponentially, pulling in metal objects from across the city, creating a dire situation. Spider-Man, in an effort to stop the chaos, revealed his identity as Peter Parker to Otto, pleading for his help and reminding him of the speech Otto had once given about intelligence being a gift to use for the good of mankind. Peter’s words, along with the electric shock, broke the tentacles' control over Otto, restoring his mind. Realizing the reactor was beyond saving, Otto resolved to stop it himself. Knowing it could only be neutralized by submerging it in water, he took control of his tentacles and ripped the reactor’s supports, allowing it to sink into the river. Despite Peter's offer to help, Otto insisted on making the sacrifice himself, stating that he would not die a monster. In an act of redemption, Otto drowned the reactor, saving the city but perishing alongside his creation, bringing an end to his tragic arc. ===Spider-Man: No Way Home=== ====Variant - Alternate Universe==== While Otto Octavius was in the process of choking Peter Parker and just before agreeing to destroy his second fusion reactor, he was pulled into the year 2024 in an alternate universe, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This occurred as Doctor Strange cast a spell intended to erase everyone’s knowledge of Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man. However, the spell was disrupted by the MCU's Peter Parker, causing it to pull individuals from across the multiverse who knew Spider-Man’s identity into the MCU universe. Otto was among the displaced individuals, arriving in the MCU alive because he was transported moments before his death in his original universe. At this point, he was still under the control of his mechanical tentacles and was operating as Doctor Octopus. After arriving in the MCU, Otto stole new clothes and sunglasses to disguise himself. While searching for his fusion reactor, he encountered the MCU’s Peter Parker, mistakenly believing he was the Peter Parker from his universe (Raimi universe). He accused MCU Peter of tampering with his reactor and, perceiving him as a threat, attacked him. During the battle, Otto integrated a piece of MCU Peter’s nanotechnology into his mechanical tentacles. However, Peter’s nanotechnology allowed him to take control of Otto’s arms, leaving Doctor Octopus powerless and frustrated. Upon seeing Peter's face, Otto realized this was not the same Peter Parker he had known. Before he could process the situation, an alternate version of Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) appeared, whom Otto immediately recognized. Both were then transported to the Sanctum Sanctorum by Doctor Strange. ====Imprisoned==== After being transported to the Sanctum Sanctorum, Doctor Octopus found himself placed in captivity alongside an alternate version of Doctor Curt Connors, who had mutated into the Lizard in this universe (the Webb universe). Overhearing a conversation between MCU Peter Parker and Doctor Strange, Otto was astonished to learn that the Multiverse was real, and he was also taken aback by the existence of magic. Later, when MCU Peter returned with his friends, MJ and Ned, Doctor Octopus introduced himself as Doctor Otto Octavius, only to be met with amusement from Peter and his friends, much to his annoyance. While listening to the conversations between MCU Peter and his friends, Doctor Octopus dismissed the idea that the Norman Osborn he saw earlier could possibly still be alive. Doctor Octopus' confusion deepened when he met an alternate version of Electro (from the Webb universe) and Sandman (from the Raimi universe). Spider-Man had teleported them to the Sanctum using magic from Doctor Strange. Eventually, Doctor Octopus found himself face-to-face with Norman Osborn, whom he believed had died during their last encounter. Norman refused to believe this, but Sandman confirmed that both Norman and Octavius had died fighting Spider-Man. Although Octavius initially rejected Sandman's claim, remembering his final moments of choking Spider-Man, he was shocked when he realized that he had died, which made him accept that Sandman’s account was true. As Electro and Lizard also acknowledged their deaths, Doctor Strange arrived with a plan to send the villains back to their respective universes using a magical device called the "Macchina di Kadavus." However, Doctor Octopus, feeling paranoid and angry, objected, realizing that Strange intended to send them back to die fighting their Spider-Men. To Doctor Octopus' surprise, MCU Peter opposed Doctor Strange's plan. When Octavius questioned why Peter was willing to spare them, the MCU MJ explained that it wasn’t in Peter’s nature to let them die. MCU Peter then offered Otto an ultimatum: either follow him and try to fix their issues or stay and face their inevitable fate. Reluctantly, Doctor Octopus, whose tentacles were now under Peter's control, chose to join the group. He was then taken to a condominium owned by Peter's friend and Aunt May, where he stayed as part of the reluctant alliance. ====Cured==== After arriving at the condominium, Doctor Octopus confronted MCU Peter Parker, questioning why they were using a living space instead of a proper lab or facility to cure the group, fearing that Peter planned to kill them all. Peter informed Otto that he would be the first to be "cured," despite Doctor Octopus' protest that he didn’t need fixing. The process of curing him involved restraining him with his own tentacles as Peter and Norman Osborn worked to create a new inhibitor chip using Stark Industries technology. When the new chip was ready, Peter attempted to install it in Otto’s neck, but Doctor Octopus resisted fiercely. Eventually, the chip was inserted, and Otto lost consciousness, worrying the group. When he regained consciousness, Otto realized that the voices of the tentacles were no longer controlling him. Overwhelmed with relief, he almost broke down in tears, feeling free for the first time in years. He expressed his gratitude to MCU Peter for restoring his mind and promised to help develop cures for the other villains, particularly Norman. Later, Otto had a brief conversation with Norman, expressing curiosity about how it would feel for him to be rid of the Green Goblin persona. Just as they were talking, Peter's spider-sense went off, and they noticed Norman's transformation into the Green Goblin. Otto and Norman followed Peter to the living room, but before they could intervene, Otto was incapacitated by Electro. Electro launched Otto out of the building, but his tentacles helped break the fall, forcing him to retreat for the time being. During the final battle at the Statue of Liberty, Doctor Octopus intervened by deceiving Electro and the three Spider-Men (MCU Spider-Man, Raimi Spider-Man, and Webb Spider-Man). He used his tentacles to remove the arc reactor from Electro and attached his cure to him. While doing so, Otto marveled at the arc reactor, commenting on how someone in this universe had achieved what he had once dreamed of: "the power of the sun in the palm of [his] hand." When he realized the voice of one of the Spider-Men was familiar, Otto recognized that this was his Peter. He shared an emotional reunion with him, commenting on how much Peter had grown since their last encounter. The reunion was cut short when Doctor Strange intervened. As the Green Goblin appeared and began wreaking havoc, Otto tried to stop him from destroying the Macchina di Kadavus but was attacked by the Green Goblin, who sliced off one of Otto's arms with his glider. The Pumpkin Bomb hidden in the device exploded, causing a large section of the scaffolding to collapse, along with the Captain America shield being added to the Statue of Liberty. Otto managed to carry the now-cured Electro to safety. After Norman Osborn was cured, the villains and the three Spider-Men were sent back to their respective universes. Otto, having taken the arc reactor from Electro’s back, returned to his universe with it, having helped bring some redemption to his chaotic journey.
