== Biography == === Background === Yusuke Fujiwara became aware of Nightshroud before the events at the Abandoned Dorm. Seeking to harness its power, he ventured to the Dorm's subterranean Duel arena to perform a ritual to free the entity. Atticus Rhodes, Yusuke's friend, followed him and became inadvertently entangled in the ritual. Yusuke subsequently disappeared, leaving the Nightshroud mask with Atticus, who was forced to resist its influence from that point onward. However, to survive the Dorm's calamities, Atticus ultimately embraced Nightshroud and became its host. During this time, he defeated the Gravekeeper's Chief and obtained half of a Shadow Charm pendant. Later, Kagemaru, leader of the Shadow Riders, recruited Nightshroud into the organization. === Shadow Riders === Nightshroud debuts as the first Shadow Rider to challenge Jaden Yuki. By this point, Jaden had acquired the other half of the Shadow Charm pendant. Nightshroud aimed to acquire the Sacred Beasts, though his motives for doing so were never fully explained. He transported Jaden, Alexis Rhodes, Syrus Truesdale, and Chumley Huffington to the Academy's volcano, initiating a Shadow Game with high stakes: the loser's soul would be sealed in a card. As part of his strategy, Nightshroud trapped Syrus and Chumley in an energy bubble suspended over lava, which weakened as Jaden lost Life Points. Nightshroud wielded his "Red-Eyes B. Dragon" to gain an early advantage in the Duel. When Jaden began to mount a counterattack, Nightshroud summoned his powerful "Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon," which grew stronger for every Dragon in his Graveyard, successfully destroying Jaden's "Elemental Hero Tempest." However, Jaden turned the tide by using "Wild Half" to split the "Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon" into two weaker copies, reducing their attack power. He then used "Elemental Hero Wildedge" to attack both copies, securing his victory. Upon Nightshroud's defeat, the mask that represented his soul was sealed away, freeing Atticus from his control. === Society of Light === During the Genex Tournament, Atticus Rhodes temporarily resumed using Nightshroud's Deck in an effort to dissuade Zane Truesdale from continuing down a destructive path as a Duelist. While wielding the "Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon," Nightshroud's dark influence began to resurface. Despite this, Atticus resisted the entity’s control and came close to defeating Zane. However, Zane's "Power Wall" Trap Card allowed him to discard most of his Deck to protect himself, an act of defiance that convinced Atticus Zane was beyond redemption. This lapse in faith allowed Nightshroud’s dormant influence to fully reclaim Atticus, triggering an immediate shift in the Duel. Nightshroud proceeded to destroy Zane's remaining monster and left him with only three cards in his Deck. Nevertheless, Zane managed to summon "Cyberdark Dragon," absorb the strength of "Red-Eyes B. Dragon," and destroy "Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon," ultimately securing his victory. Following this defeat, Nightshroud was banished back to his prison once more. === Darkness === ==== Return and Jaden’s Rematch ==== Nightshroud resurfaces after Jaden Yuki agrees to Atticus Rhodes' request for a rematch to uncover the entity's secrets. Atticus begins experiencing nightmares about the day he became Nightshroud's host, revealing that he was not the first or only person to bear Nightshroud’s soul. The mystery deepens when, during a visit to the arena beneath the Abandoned Dorm, Atticus is attacked by the Duel Monster Spirit Honest, disguised as Yusuke Fujiwara. The attack leaves him unconscious. After recovering, Atticus suggests Jaden duel Nightshroud, despite the risks, to uncover its origins. Jaden accepts the challenge and, despite Nightshroud’s use of "Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon," defeats him once again, leaving Atticus free from Nightshroud's influence. ==== Yusuke Under Nightshroud's Control ==== Nightshroud later returns during the final stages of Trueman's siege on Duel Academy, this time fully controlling Yusuke Fujiwara, who has succumbed to its influence and doctrine. Revealing himself as the mastermind behind the Trueman attacks, Nightshroud explains his plan to pull all humans into the World of Darkness, where they would endure mental torture through visions of their failures and ultimately give up their individuality. In this dark world, humanity would merge into a single entity, sharing all joy and suffering. Nightshroud justifies his actions as a way to end human suffering through the eradication of individuality. Nightshroud duels Atticus, who now wields a modified version of Nightshroud’s former "Red-Eyes" Deck. During the duel, Nightshroud manipulates Atticus into believing the match ends in a draw, exploiting the darkness in Atticus’s heart. In reality, Nightshroud uses "Clear Vice Dragon" to avoid destruction, ultimately defeating Atticus and pulling him into the World of Darkness. ==== Battle Royal with Jaden and Jesse ==== Nightshroud then challenges Jaden and Jesse Anderson to a Battle Royal duel, hoping to exploit the darkness in Jesse's heart. Despite the "Crystal Beasts" attempting to shield Jesse, Nightshroud discovers Jesse's lingering desire to defeat Jaden, briefly turning them against one another. However, the two use their attacks strategically to gain an advantage over Nightshroud. Although Jesse sacrifices himself to protect Jaden, Nightshroud is ultimately defeated when Jaden summons "Rainbow Neos" and empowers it with "Honest" to overcome "Clear Vicious Knight," purging Nightshroud from Yusuke’s body. ==== Nightshroud’s True Form ==== Nightshroud is not entirely destroyed and reappears in its true form. It creates a massive eclipse, merging its dark world with Earth and pulling all humans into the World of Darkness, leaving Jaden, Pharaoh the cat, and the spirit of Lyman Banner as the last remaining beings on Earth. In this final duel, Nightshroud challenges Jaden, viewing him as an anomaly due to his dual nature as a human and a spirit-bonded Duelist (referring to his bond with Yubel). Nightshroud reveals its origins, explaining that it was born from the insecurities, fears, and guilt present in every human, which gave rise to the darkness it embodies. It argues that its world’s domination is inevitable, as humanity will destroy itself through its own flaws. Despite its powerful "Darkness," "Zero," and "Infinity" combo, Jaden counters with "Super Polymerization," fusing Yubel with "Elemental Hero Neos" to create "Neos Wiseman," turning the tide. Nightshroud attempts to regain control with "Darkness Seed" and "Darkness Neosphere," but Jaden disables its combo using "Neo-Spacian Dark Panther" and inspires the trapped humans to reclaim their hope and bonds. Freed from the darkness, humanity’s collective spirit allows Jaden to defeat Nightshroud with "Elemental Hero Divine Neos." As Nightshroud is banished back to the World of Darkness, it vows to return as long as darkness exists within humans, but Jaden asserts that their bonds will always stand in its way. === Other Appearances === In Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force Part 3, Nightshroud possesses Atticus while brainwashing Alexis Rhodes to be his partner. Both are restored to normal after the player defeats them.
