In ''Yu-Gi-Oh! GX'', the Sacred Beasts are legendary creatures whose cards were sealed by Kagemaru beneath Duel Academy, behind the Spirit Gates. These gates could only be opened with seven Spirit Keys, which Kagemaru lacked the power to utilize at the time. If unleashed, the Sacred Beasts would plunge the world into chaos and darkness, annihilating everything in their path.

The Shadow Riders sought to collect the Spirit Keys to awaken the Sacred Beasts. Opening the gates required a strong dueling presence; stolen keys, such as in Don Zaloog’s failed attempt, would not suffice. To defend against this threat, seven of Duel Academy's top duelists were chosen: [[Jaden Yuki]], [[Zane Truesdale]], [[Chazz Princeton]], [[Alexis Rhodes]], [[Bastion Misawa]], [[Professor Banner|Lyman Banner]] (who secretly was a Shadow Rider), and [[Vellian Crowler]].

Although the Shadow Riders were ultimately defeated, Kagemaru managed to awaken the Sacred Beasts using the energy from these duels. Freed from their imprisonment, the Sacred Beasts began to restore Kagemaru’s youth and strength by draining energy from Duel Monster spirits. However, Jaden Yuki’s intervention led to Kagemaru's defeat, and the Sacred Beasts were once again sealed.

In the third season, after Duel Academy is transported to an alternate dimension, a Yubel-possessed [[Marcel Bonaparte]] retrieves the Sacred Beasts and builds a Deck to accelerate their Summoning. His Deck also supports their fusion form, ''Chaos Phantasm Armityle''.

When [[Jesse Anderson]], possessed by Yubel, reappears after his disappearance (episodes 131 to 147), he uses a Deck designed to summon the Sacred Beasts and ''Armityle'' rapidly. Although Yubel does not use the Sacred Beasts in her final duel against Jaden, ''[[Raviel, Lord of Phantasms|Raviel]]'' is shown to be part of her Deck. The fate of the Sacred Beasts following Yubel's merger with Jaden is uncertain, though it is likely that Jaden returned them to their resting place.
