=== Background ===
Mai Valentine (Mai Kujaku in the Japanese version) was orphaned at a young age and spent much of her time alone. In the English dub, she recalls that her parents were always busy and away from home for work. She previously worked as a card dealer in a shipboard casino, where she discovered her signature "Harpie Lady" cards. To earn money, she employed a strategy called "aroma tactics," in which she sprayed her cards with different perfumes, allowing her to identify them without looking, giving the impression of psychic powers. After defeating numerous men and winning a lot of money, she grew bored and quit the job.

During her time as a dealer, she met Jean-Claude Magnum, an actor she defeated in a Duel. He proposed to her, but she refused, telling him to return only when he had become a good Duelist.
