* Originally, Shrek was supposed to be voiced by Chris Farley, but he died in December 1997. He had done 80% / 90% progress ( 95% according to his brother Tom) of finishing the project. Prior to that in 1991, Steven Spielberg bought the rights for Bill Murray to voice him, but it was scrapped for an unknown reason. In addition to Farley and Murray, Nicolas Cage and Robin Williams were also considered. Finally, the role went to Mike Myers.
* Shrek appeared in a ''Kung Fu Panda 3'' commercial that spoofs the Snickers advertisements. In it, Monkey, a member of the Furious Five, and Po, the Dragon Warrior, aren't just themselves when they are hungry, with Monkey becoming Shrek while Po became Donkey respectively.
* Shrek can be spotted as General Monger's medal of order on his right chest in every scene in ''Monsters vs. Aliens.''
