'''Broly''' is an elite Saiyan who was born with an extraordinary potential for power. His abnormal power shocked King Vegeta and he exiled Broly to planet Vampa, fearing that he might one day not only challenge his son for the throne but also become a danger to the universe itself. However, after a long wait of 41 years, Broly was rescued by Cheelai and Lemo, who worked for Frieza at that time. Because of his father's wishes to take revenge, Broly was forced to fight Goku and Vegeta.

While Toriyama created most of the character, he chose to ignore the Legendary Super Saiyan form's green haired appearances when creating his design, and so Naohiro Shintani decided to create his own green-haired design as Broly's "Full Power" in order to implement it.

==Appearance==
Broly is a middle-aged man whose appearance differs greatly from his ''Dragon Ball Z'' movies counterpart, although it retains the same general concept; while still tall, he is noticeably shorter (but taller when using the Legendary Super Saiyan form compared to his Z counterpart) and is more muscular, including having noticeably tanner skin compared to his counterpart. Broly's hairstyle is also different; while it's still spiky and reaching his upper back, his counterpart had hair split down in the middle while Broly's hair is more overgrown. He has a scar across his left cheek, left bicep, and an "X"-shaped scar on his left pectoral reaching over his left shoulder and two smaller ones on the upper-left of his abdomen, which is his most notable feature. His standard facial expression also appears sterner than in the counterpart (who appeared melancholic when not unhinged). As a child, he lets his tail hang out, although it was removed by Paragus.

After having spent some time training with Goku and Vegeta on Beerus' Planet, Broly has made significant strides in controlling his temper, being capable of exiting his Wrathful state on his own. However, both Goku and Vegeta note that he's still lost control on occasion, and they cannot engage in a sparring match with him due to the risk of Broly destroying the planet. He continues to remain generally silent and lacks regular social conventions, usually only speaking unless he is spoken to. He has shown a greater appreciation for combat, paying very close attention to the sparring match between Goku and Vegeta, and when the match was over, he was shown shedding tears at the conclusion of the climactic battle.

===Background===
Broly was born in age 732 around the same time as Prince Vegeta IV with a power level of 10,000. He lived on Planet Vegeta until he was sent away to a frontier planet by the order of a jealous/paranoid King Vegeta III who repudiated the fact that Broly had greater potential than his son, Prince Vegeta. It was also implied that Broly went Great Ape shortly after arriving on the planet due to catching a glimpse of its moon upon awakening from the landing. During his stay on the planet, he encountered a giant creature that he named Ba. Broly would constantly spar with Ba by dodging its attacks until he ended up befriending it through these constant interactions. Unfortunately, Paragus saw this development as a damage and hindrance to Broly's growth and shot the beast, severing its ear in the process. This event made Ba leave and never trust Broly again. He would wear the severed ear as a green pelt (similar to a sash) to serve as a memento that he would always be together with Ba. At some point later, he while eating briefly noticed a shooting star (actually Kakarot's attack ball) passing by.

When a Vampa Beetle approached Paragus, Cheelai, and Lemo, Broly was called by his father to deal with it and did so swiftly. He and his father were then recruited to the Frieza Force and wore new clothing. Due to Cheelai and Lemo getting assaulted, Broly gets into a fight with Daigen before being subdued by Paragus via his collar. Broly then went with Cheelai and Lemo to the living quarters to eat snacks and told them the story of his pelt. When Frieza's Spaceship landed on Earth, Broly exited the ship and was ordered by his father to attack Vegeta. They traded blows with Vegeta completely at ease in his winter jacket for a few moments, until feeling pressured enough to rip it off.

Three days later, Broly was seen dragging a huge claw in his cave, where a starving Cheelai and Lemo waited. The two of them had fled to Broly's planet due both to having befriended him and because they needed someone to protect them from Frieza. Broly offered them some of the meat, and though Cheelai reluctantly ate some, Lemo found it inedible. Cheelai, however, commented that sooner or later he would undoubtedly have to change his mind, as the rations they had brought with them would not last long. As the group ate, Goku used Instant Transmission to teleport to the cave entrance. Broly immediately sensed him and took a defensive posture while Cheelai yelled at Goku to leave but Goku, in his typical unflappable manner, simply commented that he had been told that the planet was "repugnant" and so had brought supplies for them. His first gift was a new shelter stocked with provisions, and after Cheelai and Lemo admired it for a time, Goku then gave the group a few Senzu Beans and explained their use. When Cheelai, still suspicious, loudly inquired as to why Goku would help them, Goku explained that Broly was likely even stronger than Beerus, the 7th universe's God of Destruction, and as such would make an excellent training partner. Goku then prepared to leave and Lemo, having observed that Goku did not seem to have a spaceship, asked him how he had gotten to Vampa. Goku briefly explains his Instant Transmission technique, though Cheelai at least appeared not to understand any of the explanations. She reiterated that she still viewed Goku as an enemy, but Goku, not caring in the slightest, simply stated that he would like to come back and spar with Broly in the future. Additionally, he offered to teach Broly how to control his incredible power. Broly seemed to appreciate the offer and smiled at his newfound friend in gratitude. As Goku prepared for his departure, Cheelai asked for his name, in response, Goku told her that his name was "Goku", but gave Broly in particular permission to call him "Kakarot" (In the Japanese dub, Goku only said that his name is both "Goku" and "Kakarot")

=== Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga ===
===''Super Hero''===
In the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, Broly is briefly mentioned by Goku when both he and Vegeta explain to Merus and Jaco the whole situation regarding Broly and their battle against him during the Broly Saga.
Broly has a minor role in the movie, as Goku and Vegeta brought him, Cheelai and Lemo to Beerus' Planet; allowing them to train him to get his power under control, while also ensuring his protection from Frieza. During a sparring session, Broly begins to go wild and Goku quickly calls the exercise to an abrupt end lest the planet be destroyed. In an attempt to show Broly how to train without causing destruction, Goku and Vegeta spar instead while Broly watches from the sidelines. However, the session lasts hours, boring Cheelai and sending Beerus to sleep though Broly and Lemo are shown in tears moved at what they had just witnessed.

In the flashback Goku and Vegeta as Super Saiyan Blues states fight Super Saiyan Broly before fusing into Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta and defeating him. Just when he is about to be annihilated by Perfected Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta's Limit Ultra Kamehameha, Cheelai and Lemo to make a wish to Shenron to send him back to Vampa before he would have been finished off.

=== Super Hero Saga ===
Fearing that Frieza will seek out Broly, Goku brings the Saiyan along with his friends Lemo and Cheelai to Beerus' Planet for their protection and peace of mind.

While Whis spectated, Broly and Goku's sparring match grew much more intense that Whis had to evade their up-and-coming clash, causing him to drop his staff and having to be unavailable to see Bulma's incoming call. With a few exchanged blows, Goku claims that Broly is getting a hang of fighting with Broly agreeing with his sentiment but claims it is still tricky. Goku says he'll get used to it and urges to take it up a notch as Broly agrees, claiming to be ready to Goku however Broly soon begins to lose control and Goku puts an end to the session.

Whis appears and suggests a sparring match between Goku, Vegeta and Broly though they soon rule out Broly as he still lacks self-control. Broly sits on the sideline with a smile on his face as he watched Goku and Vegeta spar instead. After the long grueling battle is done, Broly is shown in tears, having been moved by their determination.

Sometime later, Broly spars with Vegeta. At first Vegeta appears to be in complete control as Broly fights in too aggressive a manner. Vegeta advises him to not suppress his anger as it is the source of a Saiyan's strength however in Broly's case he loses himself to that anger. After Vegeta turns Super Saiyan they continue their fight with Broly managing to still hold his own. Both Whis and Vegeta complement Broly's growth but note that he is not able to use his full strength.

When Goku brings Gohan, Goten, and Trunks to Beerus' planet, Broly wonders who they are and learns from Whis that they are Goku's and Vegeta's offsprings. While watching Gohan, Goten, and Trunks, he is also surprised to learn that they can turn into Super Saiyans. When watching Goku and Gohan prepare for their battle, Broly is shocked when Gohan transforms into his Beast form. He grabs Lemo when he was about to be blown away from the father-son collision.

As the fight continues, Broly observes Gohan matching Goku's power, and takes particular interest in hearing how Gohan brings out Beast's maximum power by raising his energy to a threshold where he might go berserk, but then subsequently using his energy to retain control. Presumably intrigued at the possibility of learning to do so for himself, Broly becomes more and more excited as he watches. Goku notices this and halts his spar with Gohan, instead allowing Broly to tag in for a chance to fight.

As they begin, Broly proves to be able to match Ultimate Gohan's power with his own astonishing strength, but quickly requests Gohan use his Beast form instead. Gohan complies and transforms, immediately overwhelming Broly with heavy blows and his intense aura pressure. Broly soon begins furiously powering up to the extent where Goku worries he might go berserk again. However, presumably remembering Gohan's explanation of Beast, Broly manages to reassert control over his Super Saiyan state as he transforms, surprising even Gohan as the former momentarily stops the latter's attack. Ultimately, Gohan regains the advantage in their fight before a jealous Vegeta interrupts them, demanding to fight Gohan as well. As Gohan, Vegeta and Goku begin fighting together, Broly ends up fight Trunks and Goten, before the battle results in an all-out slugfest and leaves everyone exhausted.

*Although Broly from ''Dragon Ball Super'' and Broly from the Broly Saga are two different characters with opposite personalities, it is to be noted that the latter version's characterization in one of the what-if storylines for ''Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors'' depicted a then-amnesiac Broly with a similar personality to the one in ''Dragon Ball Super'' (which occurred several years after that game's release), which might have implied that this would have been Broly's initial personality had he not suffered from the extreme trauma that occurred shortly after his birth (as Broly's amnesia suppressed his traumatic memories enough to restore his sanity, allowing him to form a friendship with Mr. Satan who manages to calm him down after his memories resurfaced upon encountering Goku during the World Martial Arts Tournament). Interestingly enough, the Broly from the Broly Saga initially turning out gentle-hearted like Broly from ''Dragon Ball Super'' was briefly hinted at in Paragus's flashback to his and Goku's birth in ''Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan'', where the medics briefly note while discussing their respective power levels at birth that Goku, despite being born with a mere power level of 2, nevertheless was shown to have the feistiness of a typical Saiyan warrior by crying the loudest while praising him for it, while Broly by contrast was barely even crying at all (and only did so in response to Goku's crying).

**Kale also differs from Broly in that she is more civilized, well mannered, and has a relatively meek personality, while Broly is more primitive, lacking in social graces, and more prone to violence, due to being trained to be a warrior by his father. However these difference actually match how Saiyans are in their respective universes as Universe 6 Saiyans are more evolved, with their civilization, and homeworld of origin still intact, and tend to be gentle-hearted and righteous, while Universe 7 Saiyans tend to be less civilized, live on adopted homeworlds due to the Saiyan civilizations that existed on Planet Vegeta and Planet Sadala of Universe 7 being destroyed, and are generally more prone to violence and brutality, despite having the capacity to become gentle-hearted and righteous.
