Terry Cartwright, played by David Schaal is a fictional character from the E4 comedy show, The Inbetweeners. He is the father of Jay Cartwright.

Characterisation[edit | edit source]

Terry has a difficult relationship with Jay, taking almost every opportunity to bring him down and prove to Will, Simon and Neil that he is lying. Jay's insecure, arrogant and selfish personality may be due to Terry's complicated behavior.

He is first seen in the episode, Caravan Club where he is going to the toilet while Will McKenzie, Neil Sutherland and Simon Cooper are having dinner with Jay and his mother, while he's making large farting sounds. He has poor toilet hygiene, and ridicules Jay's attempts at approaching girls. Despite being obnoxious towards Jay, he is actually very easy-going and seems to get along well with the group.

When Jay gets his first real girlfriend, Terry seems to take an instant dislike to her, calling her a pig and a slut behind her back. He also calls her a hound in the Inbetweeners Movie, which was also the first time he met Neil's dad. Terry comments on how he looks gay, but doesn't seem to think he's actually gay because he has a son. Both Will's mum and Simon's mum take a strong disliking to him.
