Non-Standard Breathing
From The Character Database
Non-Standard Breathing is the ability to breathe in environments that would typically be hazardous or impossible for a baseline human to breathe in. This can be achieved through various means, including specialized physiology, equipment, or the creation of air pockets.
Key Points
- Not Self-Sustenance: Unlike Self-Sustenance, characters with Non-Standard Breathing still require the act of breathing to survive and cannot indefinitely go without air.
Possible Uses
- Breathing underwater
- Breathing on other planets
- Breathing through toxic fumes
Types of Non-Standard Breathing
Type 1: Physiological
- The user possesses natural traits such as gills or other specialized organs that allow them to breathe in hazardous environments.
- Examples: Great White Shark, SpongeBob SquarePants, Giant Squid
Type 2: Superhuman
- The user has superhuman abilities that enable them to breathe in hazardous environments without the need for additional equipment.
- Examples: Superman, Aquaman
Type 3: Assisted
- The user uses external devices, such as gas tanks or other breathing apparatuses, to breathe in hazardous environments.
- Examples: Viper (Valorant), Batman
Type 4: Via Air Manipulation
- The user can manipulate air to create breathable pockets in hazardous environments, allowing them to survive in those conditions.
- Examples: Steven Universe, The Player (Minecraft)
Limitations
- The user may not be able to breathe outside their specific environment or may have limited ability to do so.
- They may need to create an air pocket to breathe within hazardous environments.
- The user might need to return to their specific environment after spending extended periods outside it.
- If reliant on a breathing apparatus, losing it could result in asphyxiation and death.
- They may still depend on a limited supply of breathable substance.
