Mayor McCheese is the mayor of McDonaldland, the fictional world featured in McDonald's commercials. He is depicted as a humanoid character with a large cheeseburger for a head, wearing a suit and a small top hat. Inspired by H.R. Pufnstuf, Mayor McCheese was not the main character (a role taken by Ronald McDonald) but was nevertheless quite popular. He was initially voiced by Howard Jones and later by Bob Joles.

Although a minor character, Mayor McCheese gained considerable popularity, particularly following a lawsuit that led to his removal. Fans have created petitions and written blog posts advocating for his return to McDonald's commercials, highlighting the nostalgic fondness for characters like him.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

  • 1971-1973: Mayor McCheese wore a pink coat with a white rose pinned on top of a yellow button-down shirt, along with a purple sash that read "Mayor" (with the "M" resembling the Golden Arches). He also had purple pants, black shoes, and a purple and yellow top hat, often seen carrying a pair of spectacles in his hand. His head was large, featuring circular cheeks and a long nose that would wobble in commercials.
  • 1973-1985: His outfit saw several changes during this period. The pink coat became a darker shade, and his sash and top hat were revised with new colors. His purple pants were replaced with long, striped pants, and he appeared taller. His head underwent a significant revision as well; his nose was shortened and no longer wobbled, and his cheeks were positioned further apart from his face.

Lawsuit and Disappearance:[edit | edit source]

Mayor McCheese's disappearance from McDonaldland was due to a lawsuit filed by Sid and Marty Krofft, the creators of H.R. Pufnstuf, who claimed that McDonaldland was a ripoff of their show. As a result of the lawsuit, most of the original characters, including Mayor McCheese (who was directly inspired by Pufnstuf), were phased out. Mayor McCheese made some of his final appearances in commercials during the late 1970s and early 1980s, but he did appear in a cameo in the episode Have Time, Will Travel (Released October 19, 2001) series The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald. where he is seen in the 70s disco era.
