Appearance

Byeong-gi is a middle-aged man with short black hair and a slightly unkempt appearance. He wears the standard green tracksuit with the number 111 printed on it, like the other contestants. Due to his background as a doctor, he maintains a somewhat composed and professional demeanor, but his growing stress and paranoia throughout the games take a visible toll on his appearance.

Personality

Byeong-gi is highly pragmatic and self-serving, prioritizing his survival above all else. Unlike most contestants, he has an unfair advantage thanks to his secret alliance with the corrupt guards, which makes him more arrogant and entitled. He is cautious but also increasingly irritable as the games progress, particularly when deprived of sleep and under constant pressure. His paranoia eventually drives him to lash out, leading to his downfall. Despite his medical expertise, he shows little regard for ethics, willingly participating in organ trafficking in exchange for information and privileges.

Biography

Background

Byeong-gi was a disgraced doctor with a history of unethical medical practices. At least one of his patients died due to his negligence, leading to serious consequences that likely contributed to his financial struggles. In an attempt to settle his debts, he agreed to participate in the 33rd Squid Game.

33rd Squid Game

During the competition, Byeong-gi was secretly recruited by a group of corrupt guards, including Worker Number 28, to extract organs from deceased players. The harvested organs were then smuggled out and sold to traffickers. In exchange, Byeong-gi was granted additional food and insider information about the upcoming games, significantly increasing his odds of survival.

The guards communicated with him through pink slips of paper hidden inside his meals, which he discreetly consumed after reading. However, his underhanded tactics directly violated the fundamental rules of the Squid Game, which emphasized fairness and equal opportunity. When the Front Man discovered the operation, he ordered the execution of Byeong-gi and the guards involved, swiftly eliminating them to maintain the integrity of the competition.

Before the third round's Tug of War game, the guards inform Byeong-gi that the organizers intend to provoke a fight among the contestants to reduce their numbers. They advise him to align himself with Jang Deok-su and his gang for protection. In response, Byeong-gi gains Deok-su's trust by revealing that the next game will be Tug of War, allowing Deok-su to assemble a physically strong team. This insider knowledge helps both of them survive the round. Additionally, Byeong-gi tends to Deok-su’s wound after the fight, further securing his place within the gang.

Byeong-gi continues performing organ-harvesting surgeries for the corrupt guards, but the mounting stress of the games and severe exhaustion leave him increasingly paranoid and volatile. When the guards fail to provide him with details about the next game, he snaps in frustration, killing one of them before making a desperate escape attempt.

His flight leads him to the Sugar Honeycombs game hall, where he is cornered by the remaining guards. The chaos draws the attention of the Front Man, Hwang In-ho, who arrives with his enforcers. Byeong-gi is swiftly executed and his body, along with those of the traitorous guards, is strung up along the stairwell as a grim warning to the remaining players about the consequences of breaking the rules.

2024

Byeong-gi is later indirectly referenced by the Masked Officer during a conversation with Kang No-eul in Six Legs.

Trivia

  • In the player roster photos, Player 111’s image mistakenly depicts a different man instead of Byeong-gi, likely a continuity error.
  • Byeong-gi is the only supporting character to die before the Marbles game, as his rule-breaking led to his execution.
  • His death resulted in an uneven number of players, which allowed one contestant to automatically advance to the next round.
  • He is also the only supporting character to have unintentionally shared his player number with an extra.
