Maxwell is instantly recognizable by his distinctive outfit. He wears a Rooster Helmet, gray headphones, a blue-gray hoodie featuring a star emblem (possibly representing a Starite), white gloves, green shorts, blue-gray shoes, and red socks. His eyes are small and square in ''Scribblenauts'' and ''Super Scribblenauts'', likely due to technical limitations, while later games and concept art depict him with small round eyes. His default expression is a smile, though in ''Scribblenauts Unmasked'', his expression changes to an unamused look upon death.

In ''Scribblenauts Showdown'', the avatar creator reveals that Maxwell has hair beneath his Rooster Helmet, styled with three small tufts resembling the helmet's design.
