SNMWNDS

I learned that ideas can't be created or destroyed. So instead of CREATING heroes to fight for us, we BECOME the best of what those heroes represent.
― Maxwell

Maxwell' is the central protagonist of the Scribblenauts series, appearing in Scribblenauts, Super Scribblenauts, Scribblenauts Remix, Scribblenauts Unlimited, and Scribblenauts Unmasked. His primary objective is to collect Starites and Starite Shards from various locations, often as part of his efforts to help others or solve problems.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Maxwell is instantly recognizable by his distinctive outfit. He wears a Rooster Helmet, gray headphones, a blue-gray hoodie featuring a star emblem (possibly representing a Starite), white gloves, green shorts, blue-gray shoes, and red socks. His eyes are small and square in Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts, likely due to technical limitations, while later games and concept art depict him with small round eyes. His default expression is a smile, though in Scribblenauts Unmasked, his expression changes to an unamused look upon death.

In Scribblenauts Showdown, the avatar creator reveals that Maxwell has hair beneath his Rooster Helmet, styled with three small tufts resembling the helmet's design. His helmet and star emblem align with the Scribblenaut aesthetic, which could be a deliberate choice to blend in or an inherited family trait, as many of his siblings—including his sister Lily—wear personalized variations of the Rooster Helmet.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Maxwell's personality is shaped by his adventurous spirit, creativity, and growth throughout the Scribblenauts series. Initially, he is portrayed as mischievous and arrogant, a child who takes his magical notebook for granted and enjoys using it for pranks, as seen in Scribblenauts Unlimited when he tricks a beggar with a rotten apple. However, his journey to save his sister Lily reveals a deeper side to his character.

Maxwell demonstrates resilience, determination, and an evolving sense of responsibility as he learns the value of helping others. Despite his playful and imaginative nature, he is willing to face challenges, solve complex problems, and even confront adversaries to achieve his goals. Maxwell's resourcefulness and boundless creativity are central to his character, as he uses the notebook to craft solutions that range from practical to absurdly inventive.

While Maxwell's primary goal is often altruistic, he occasionally indulges in creating worlds and scenarios purely for fun, reflecting his youthful curiosity. Over time, his experiences teach him humility and empathy, transforming him from a carefree prankster into a thoughtful and heroic figure.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In Scribblenauts Unlimited, Maxwell is introduced as one of 42 siblings in a family with 41 brothers, one sister, and two adventurous parents, Edgar and Julie. Each child received a magical gift from their parents' travels. Maxwell's gift was a magical notebook capable of bringing anything he wrote to life, while his sister Lily was given a globe that could teleport her anywhere in the world. The nature of the other siblings' gifts remains unknown.

Maxwell's journey begins when he uses the notebook to trick a beggar into eating a rotten apple, causing the beggar to curse Lily, slowly turning her to stone. To save her, Maxwell learns he must collect Starites, magical objects created from the happiness of others, by helping people solve their problems. After lifting the curse, Maxwell continues his quest to find Starites, often creating entire worlds—whether paradisiacal or nightmarish—and tackling challenges along the way.

Scribblenauts[edit | edit source]

In the original game, Maxwell is enrolled in a mysterious university for "Scribblenauts" and tasked with collecting Starites. The reasons behind this quest are unexplained, but he uses his magical notebook to solve puzzles, trials, and other challenges to obtain them.

Super Scribblenauts and Scribblenauts Remix[edit | edit source]

In these games, Maxwell's motivation is similarly ambiguous. He is shown observing constellations, suggesting he might be imagining adventures among the stars or actually exploring them. The exact storyline remains uncertain.

Scribblenauts Unlimited[edit | edit source]

Unlike earlier games, Unlimited introduces a clear storyline. Maxwell's arrogance as a child leads to Lily's curse, prompting his quest to collect Starites by helping others. He learns a valuable lesson about kindness and responsibility, which is revealed to be a clever ruse orchestrated by his father, disguised as the beggar, to teach Maxwell and Lily the importance of empathy and humility.

Scribblenauts Unmasked[edit | edit source]

Maxwell and Lily engage in a playful argument about comic book heroes, leading Maxwell to write "Gotham" on a notebook page and touch it to Lily's globe. This transports them to Gotham City in the DC Universe. Unbeknownst to Maxwell, the word "Doppelganger" was written on the back of the page, bringing his sinister counterpart to life. Maxwell and Lily must team up with DC heroes to stop the Doppelganger and restore order.
