===Early Life=== James "Jimmy" Howlett was born in 1832 in the area that would later become the Northwest Territories of Canada. In 1845, while James was bedridden with illness, Victor visited him and kept him company. James' father, John Howlett, checked on him, but shortly after, Thomas Logan, the groundskeeper and the secret lover of James' mother, Elizabeth Howlett, entered the Howlett home drunk, searching for Elizabeth. A confrontation ensued, and Thomas shot John. Hearing the gunfire, James investigated and found his father dead. In his grief, James' mutation manifested, sprouting bone claws from his fists and knuckles. Enraged, James roared and impaled Thomas with his new claws. Thomas revealed with his dying breath that he, not John, was James' true father, calling him his son. After Thomas' death, Elizabeth, horrified by James' mutation, called him a freak and questioned what he was, ultimately casting him out. Confused and scared, James fled into the woods, followed by Victor. Victor, also a mutant, caught up to James and declared that they were brothers, vowing to always stick together. They embraced a life of rage and violence, and because Victor was his only true family, James began using the name "Logan". Over the next 128 years, Logan and Victor, growing from boys into men, bravely serve as soldiers for the United States in numerous wars. Utilizing their mutant abilities, they fight in the American Civil War on the Union side under President Abraham Lincoln, on the Western Front in World War I, participate in the D-Day Invasion during World War II, and serve in the Vietnam War. However, over time, Victor becomes increasingly violent and uncontrollable. ====Meeting Ichirō Yashida==== In 1945, Logan is transferred from the European front to the Pacific front, where he is captured by Japanese forces and sent to a POW camp near Nagasaki before August 9. During the Nagasaki bombing on August 9, 1945, Logan saves the life of Ichirō Yashida, a young officer in the Imperial Japanese Army. In gratitude, Yashida offers Logan a Japanese samurai sword, which Logan declines, telling Yashida to keep it for him, promising to return for it someday. ====Meeting Charles and Erik==== In 1962, while traveling the world in search of mutants to fight the Hellfire Club, a young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr encounter Logan in a bar. They introduce themselves, but Logan dismisses them before they can continue the conversation. ====Affair with Gwen==== In January 1973, Wolverine is hired as a young woman's bodyguard but enters a relationship with her, violating the rules. He is discovered the next morning.
