== Biography == === Background === Future Gohan lived the same life as his main timeline counterpart until the point of the timeline divergence, which occurred when Future Frieza arrived on Earth in August Age 764. In the original timeline, Future Goku uses Instant Transmission to arrive and kill Frieza and his father (Goku even mentions to Future Trunks in the main series that this was his plan). However, the timeline diverges when Future Trunks arrives and kills the tyrants instead of Goku in the main timeline. Future Gohan hails from the true original timeline, one without Future Trunks traveling back in time, resulting in events that unfold differently from those in the main series === The History of Trunks === After the death of his father due to a lethal heart virus in Age 766, and the subsequent murders of the Dragon Team by the androids on May 12, Age 767, Gohan's life is drastically altered. The deaths of Future Piccolo and Future Kami render the Dragon Balls useless forever, as the Z Fighters are unable to be wished back to life. It is stated that the loss of Gohan's friends, like Future Piccolo and Future Krillin, triggered his transformation into a Super Saiyan. Unlike his counterpart in the main timeline, Future Gohan never met Videl, had a younger brother, or went to school to fulfill his dream of becoming a scholar, making him fully dedicated to being a warrior. Thanks to Future Trunks' Time Machine, Gohan's life is split into two different timeline incarnations: one where he lives in a peaceful world and another, as featured here, where he endures an apocalyptic timeline. Over the following thirteen years, Gohan trains himself to take down the androids and develops a close bond with Trunks, the son of Vegeta and Bulma. As the last remaining Z Fighter, and by extension, the last of his generation (since he never met Videl or started a family), Gohan takes it upon himself to continually challenge the androids, despite being outnumbered and outclassed. He becomes a Super Saiyan during this years-long struggle against the androids. In the special, Trunks mentions that as a half-Saiyan hybrid like himself, Gohan must understand the frustration of not being able to stop the androids. While Gohan acknowledges this, he also points out that Trunks is currently an emotional wreck, similar to how he felt when he wasn't allowed to train and fight with his friends. Future Gohan's first true appearance in the special is his arrival at a city recently attacked by the androids, thirteen years after the Z Fighters were killed. He encounters Future Trunks in the ruins of the city and, after hearing Trunks' plea to learn to fight, agrees to take him under his wing. Over the next thirteen years, Gohan becomes Trunks' mentor, training him in everything he knows, including swordsmanship. During a day of relaxation, Gohan and Trunks are flying overhead when they notice the androids attacking the theme park, Super World. The two quickly head toward the park to confront the androids. Upon arrival, Gohan instructs Trunks to stay out of the fight. Gohan then engages in battle with Android 17, transforming into his Super Saiyan form. Despite taking a few hits from Android 17, Gohan soon gains the upper hand. However, Android 18 intervenes, and Gohan quickly finds himself overwhelmed by the combined assault. Trunks, wanting to help, rushes in to assist Gohan but is swiftly defeated by Android 18. As Android 18 prepares to deliver a powerful energy blast to the fallen Trunks, Gohan intervenes, taking the attack to save Trunks' life. Gohan then carries the unconscious Trunks and searches for a place to hide. He successfully finds cover, but the androids decide to bomb the entire area to flush them out. Gohan manages to protect Trunks and remain hidden, but at the cost of his left arm, which is completely blown off in the bombing. With only one Senzu Bean left in his bag, Gohan chooses to give it to Trunks rather than using it to restore his own arm, saving Trunks from death. Trunks awakens shortly afterward and brings the unconscious Gohan back to Capsule Corporation, where Bulma treats his wounds. After Gohan's injuries heal, the two resume training, with Trunks pushing ever closer to becoming a Super Saiyan and showing significant improvement day by day. Sometime later, during a day of training, the nearby Pepper Town is attacked by the androids. Gohan prepares himself for battle, but young Trunks, eager to fight alongside him, begs to join the fight. Gohan seemingly agrees, but just before they depart, he knocks Trunks out to prevent him from being nearly killed again, or worse. Determined to face the androids alone, the one-armed Gohan seals his fate as he flies into the city and ambushes the androids. Despite his handicap, Gohan puts up a long, suspenseful fight against the combined power of Android 17 and Android 18. As he struggles to maintain his defenses, the androids blast a building, obstructing Gohan's vision. Seizing the opportunity, the two androids knock Gohan down and mercilessly bombard him with continuous energy blasts, ultimately killing him. Trunks awakens when he senses Gohan's ki depleting. Rushing to the city, he finds Gohan's lifeless body lying in a pool of blood and water. Overwhelmed with grief and rage, Trunks' emotions burst out, triggering his transformation into a Super Saiyan for the first time. In the manga chapter that this special is based on, some differences are noted. The first battle against the androids, where Gohan obtains his facial scar and loses his arm, is not shown. Trunks is already capable of transforming into a Super Saiyan, and Android 18 presumably does not participate in the final battle. Android 17, mocking Gohan's earlier defeat, claims he used less than half of his power and kills Gohan with ease before Trunks awakens to find his corpse in the debris. The scene of Trunks pounding the ground in frustration is also depicted, though with less emphasis, and there is no rain during this sequence. === Dragon Ball Super === In the "Future" Trunks Saga, a bonus story chapter reveals a flashback of Future Gohan as a child. It is shown that young Future Gohan survived a battle with the Androids, as he had left to find the Dragon Balls in hopes of saving the planet before Future Piccolo's death. Future Bulma, with baby Future Trunks in tow, picks him up in her airplane and informs him that someone has already gathered the Dragon Balls. Checking the Dragon Radar, Gohan sees that all the Dragon Balls are in one location. They race to retrieve the Dragon Balls before a wish is made, but they arrive too late. The Pilaf Gang, having summoned Shenron, accidentally bungles their wish, causing Future Pilaf, Future Mai, and Future Shu to be turned into babies. Gohan screams in anguish as he sees the Dragon Balls drop to the ground as stones, signaling the deaths of Future Piccolo and Future Kami, and the permanent loss of the Dragon Balls. In Dragon Ball Super, Future Gohan appears in flashbacks during Future Trunks' storyline. In these flashbacks, Gohan is seen with Trunks when the androids attack a nearby city. Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and instructs Trunks to stay behind, but Trunks insists on joining him. Gohan agrees but then knocks Trunks out to face the androids alone. Later, Trunks discovers Gohan's lifeless body, which prompts him to transform into a Super Saiyan for the first time. Although Future Gohan only appears in these flashbacks, his spirit is ultimately erased when Future Zeno destroys Future Trunks' timeline to eliminate Infinite Zamasu. An image of Future Gohan appears as Gohan bids Trunks farewell, leading Trunks to reflect on their shared moments. Trunks is comforted by Gohan's optimistic words, despite his sadness over the failure to protect his world. Gohan's soul remains in the new alternate future timeline created by Whis in the anime or by Future Trunks and Future Mai in the manga.
