Future Gohan (未み来らいの孫そん悟ご飯はん Mirai no Son Gohan) is the counterpart of Gohan from an alternate timeline where Future Trunks resides.

In this timeline, Future Gohan is portrayed as a twenty-three-year-old man who serves as the mentor to Future Trunks. After Goku dies from a heart virus and cannot be revived with the Dragon Balls due to the natural cause of his death, and following the murder of the Dragon Team by Android 17 and Android 18 six months later, Gohan becomes Earth's last line of defense. As a Super Saiyan, he dedicates the next thirteen years to battling the androids while training Future Trunks, hoping that one day Trunks will be able to defeat them.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Future Gohan appears as a tall, stern, and muscular man, wearing a uniform that closely resembles Goku's early attire. He mentions that he is inspired to wear this uniform in hopes of becoming as strong as Goku. The differences in his outfit include longer sleeves, dark blue boots with yellowish stripes on the bottom edges, and the absence of a line running down the middle of the boots. Additionally, he wears his own kanji symbol, "Han" (飯), on the back of his uniform. Bulma even comments that Gohan looks strikingly similar to Goku when wearing this uniform.

Future Gohan's hairstyle remains unchanged from his childhood, but the longer part of his hair is cut shorter, somewhat resembling the haircut his present counterpart had when he first trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and fought Cell, though it is more mature in appearance since Future Gohan is a full-grown adult. He also has a prominent scar running down the left side of his face, a result of an injury sustained during a battle with the androids, which also cost him his left arm. When Future Gohan was revived in Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road, his arm was restored, though he retained his facial scar.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Future Gohan's personality underwent a significant transformation due to the tragic events that shaped his life. As a child, much like his present counterpart, he lacked the fighting spirit of his father, Goku. He was a shy, gentle-hearted boy, more focused on his studies than on fighting. However, when he witnessed his friends getting hurt, his hidden potential would briefly surface, revealing the power he held within. Gohan's pacifist nature and aversion to fighting were dominant until the death of his father from a heart virus, the invasion of the androids, and the murder of his friends, especially his mentor, Future Piccolo. These events marked a dramatic turning point in his life, leading him down a path of relentless struggle.

Thirteen years after the death of the Z Fighters, Gohan matured into a far more serious and aggressive individual compared to his present timeline counterpart, who remained naive, awkward, and more laid-back, especially when adopting his Great Saiyaman persona. Future Gohan, having endured years of battling the androids alone in a desolate world, lost much of his earlier pacifism. He became a warrior driven by a "do or die" mentality, fiercely determined to destroy the androids in revenge for the devastation they caused.

Despite this hardened exterior, Gohan retained elements of his former self, especially in moments of peace. He could still be calm and cheerful, much like his father and present counterpart. During these rare moments, Gohan would enjoy life as it was, such as when he advised Trunks not to rush into becoming a Super Saiyan until he was truly ready. His bond with Trunks was incredibly close, with Gohan viewing him almost as a little brother. Although he once shared the same dream as his mainstream counterpart of becoming a scholar, the catastrophic events that unfolded likely prevented him from pursuing this goal. Instead, Gohan dedicated his time to training and strategizing ways to stop the androids.

Gohan was also realistic about his chances against the androids, acknowledging the likelihood of his defeat. In this eventuality, he was prepared to entrust the future of Earth to Trunks, recognizing the younger warrior as the last hope for their world.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Future Gohan lived the same life as his main timeline counterpart until the point of the timeline divergence, which occurred when Future Frieza arrived on Earth in August Age 764. In the original timeline, Future Goku uses Instant Transmission to arrive and kill Frieza and his father (Goku even mentions to Future Trunks in the main series that this was his plan). However, the timeline diverges when Future Trunks arrives and kills the tyrants instead of Goku in the main timeline. Future Gohan hails from the true original timeline, one without Future Trunks traveling back in time, resulting in events that unfold differently from those in the main series

The History of Trunks[edit | edit source]

After the death of his father due to a lethal heart virus in Age 766, and the subsequent murders of the Dragon Team by the androids on May 12, Age 767, Gohan's life is drastically altered. The deaths of Future Piccolo and Future Kami render the Dragon Balls useless forever, as the Z Fighters are unable to be wished back to life. It is stated that the loss of Gohan's friends, like Future Piccolo and Future Krillin, triggered his transformation into a Super Saiyan. Unlike his counterpart in the main timeline, Future Gohan never met Videl, had a younger brother, or went to school to fulfill his dream of becoming a scholar, making him fully dedicated to being a warrior.

Thanks to Future Trunks' Time Machine, Gohan's life is split into two different timeline incarnations: one where he lives in a peaceful world and another, as featured here, where he endures an apocalyptic timeline. Over the following thirteen years, Gohan trains himself to take down the androids and develops a close bond with Trunks, the son of Vegeta and Bulma. As the last remaining Z Fighter, and by extension, the last of his generation (since he never met Videl or started a family), Gohan takes it upon himself to continually challenge the androids, despite being outnumbered and outclassed. He becomes a Super Saiyan during this years-long struggle against the androids.

In the special, Trunks mentions that as a half-Saiyan hybrid like himself, Gohan must understand the frustration of not being able to stop the androids. While Gohan acknowledges this, he also points out that Trunks is currently an emotional wreck, similar to how he felt when he wasn't allowed to train and fight with his friends. Future Gohan's first true appearance in the special is his arrival at a city recently attacked by the androids, thirteen years after the Z Fighters were killed. He encounters Future Trunks in the ruins of the city and, after hearing Trunks' plea to learn to fight, agrees to take him under his wing. Over the next thirteen years, Gohan becomes Trunks' mentor, training him in everything he knows, including swordsmanship.

During a day of relaxation, Gohan and Trunks are flying overhead when they notice the androids attacking the theme park, Super World. The two quickly head toward the park to confront the androids. Upon arrival, Gohan instructs Trunks to stay out of the fight. Gohan then engages in battle with Android 17, transforming into his Super Saiyan form. Despite taking a few hits from Android 17, Gohan soon gains the upper hand. However, Android 18 intervenes, and Gohan quickly finds himself overwhelmed by the combined assault.

Trunks, wanting to help, rushes in to assist Gohan but is swiftly defeated by Android 18. As Android 18 prepares to deliver a powerful energy blast to the fallen Trunks, Gohan intervenes, taking the attack to save Trunks' life. Gohan then carries the unconscious Trunks and searches for a place to hide. He successfully finds cover, but the androids decide to bomb the entire area to flush them out. Gohan manages to protect Trunks and remain hidden, but at the cost of his left arm, which is completely blown off in the bombing.

With only one Senzu Bean left in his bag, Gohan chooses to give it to Trunks rather than using it to restore his own arm, saving Trunks from death. Trunks awakens shortly afterward and brings the unconscious Gohan back to Capsule Corporation, where Bulma treats his wounds. After Gohan's injuries heal, the two resume training, with Trunks pushing ever closer to becoming a Super Saiyan and showing significant improvement day by day.

Sometime later, during a day of training, the nearby Pepper Town is attacked by the androids. Gohan prepares himself for battle, but young Trunks, eager to fight alongside him, begs to join the fight. Gohan seemingly agrees, but just before they depart, he knocks Trunks out to prevent him from being nearly killed again, or worse. Determined to face the androids alone, the one-armed Gohan seals his fate as he flies into the city and ambushes the androids.

Despite his handicap, Gohan puts up a long, suspenseful fight against the combined power of Android 17 and Android 18. As he struggles to maintain his defenses, the androids blast a building, obstructing Gohan's vision. Seizing the opportunity, the two androids knock Gohan down and mercilessly bombard him with continuous energy blasts, ultimately killing him.

Trunks awakens when he senses Gohan's ki depleting. Rushing to the city, he finds Gohan's lifeless body lying in a pool of blood and water. Overwhelmed with grief and rage, Trunks' emotions burst out, triggering his transformation into a Super Saiyan for the first time.

In the manga chapter that this special is based on, some differences are noted. The first battle against the androids, where Gohan obtains his facial scar and loses his arm, is not shown. Trunks is already capable of transforming into a Super Saiyan, and Android 18 presumably does not participate in the final battle. Android 17, mocking Gohan's earlier defeat, claims he used less than half of his power and kills Gohan with ease before Trunks awakens to find his corpse in the debris. The scene of Trunks pounding the ground in frustration is also depicted, though with less emphasis, and there is no rain during this sequence.

Dragon Ball Super[edit | edit source]

In the "Future" Trunks Saga, a bonus story chapter reveals a flashback of Future Gohan as a child. It is shown that young Future Gohan survived a battle with the Androids, as he had left to find the Dragon Balls in hopes of saving the planet before Future Piccolo's death. Future Bulma, with baby Future Trunks in tow, picks him up in her airplane and informs him that someone has already gathered the Dragon Balls. Checking the Dragon Radar, Gohan sees that all the Dragon Balls are in one location.

They race to retrieve the Dragon Balls before a wish is made, but they arrive too late. The Pilaf Gang, having summoned Shenron, accidentally bungles their wish, causing Future Pilaf, Future Mai, and Future Shu to be turned into babies. Gohan screams in anguish as he sees the Dragon Balls drop to the ground as stones, signaling the deaths of Future Piccolo and Future Kami, and the permanent loss of the Dragon Balls.

In Dragon Ball Super, Future Gohan appears in flashbacks during Future Trunks' storyline. In these flashbacks, Gohan is seen with Trunks when the androids attack a nearby city. Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and instructs Trunks to stay behind, but Trunks insists on joining him. Gohan agrees but then knocks Trunks out to face the androids alone. Later, Trunks discovers Gohan's lifeless body, which prompts him to transform into a Super Saiyan for the first time.

Although Future Gohan only appears in these flashbacks, his spirit is ultimately erased when Future Zeno destroys Future Trunks' timeline to eliminate Infinite Zamasu. An image of Future Gohan appears as Gohan bids Trunks farewell, leading Trunks to reflect on their shared moments. Trunks is comforted by Gohan's optimistic words, despite his sadness over the failure to protect his world. Gohan's soul remains in the new alternate future timeline created by Whis in the anime or by Future Trunks and Future Mai in the manga.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Future Gohan is the first adult version of the character depicted in both the manga and anime.
  • Dameon Clarke (the English voice actor for Cell) voices Future Gohan in the TV special and flashbacks. However, Kyle Hebert, who voices teenage Gohan in the Buu arc, took over the role for all other media, including Dragon Ball Super.
  • After an encounter with the androids, Future Gohan received scars resembling Yamcha's, and his haircut loosely resembles Yamcha's from the Majin Buu arc.
  • Future Gohan has a monstrous appetite akin to Goku's and eats his meals rapidly. Future Bulma humorously comments, "Yep, like father like son," upon seeing him finish his food. This trait is similarly shown in Present Gohan during the World Tournament Saga and in Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn.
  • In Japanese, Future Gohan uses the pronoun ore, reflecting a rougher image, whereas Present Gohan uses the softer boku. Future Gohan also refers to villains with omae, while Present Gohan uses kisama.
  • Future Gohan's voice is deep and rough in the Japanese version, similar to Goku's, whereas Present Gohan's voice is lighter and more polished, though it becomes serious in intense situations.
  • The manga suggests that Future Gohan would have struggled against the androids even with both arms, as Future Android 17 mentioned he used less than half of his full power in their previous encounters.
  • Both Future and Present Gohan lost the use of their left arm during battles with androids (Future Gohan with Android 17 and 18, and Present Gohan with Cell). Future Gohan lost his arm completely, while Present Gohan's arm was only badly injured and later fully recovered.
  • Many video games, such as Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Xenoverse 2, depict Future Gohan with a broken left arm, referencing the loss of his arm during his battles with the androids.
  • In contrast, games like Dokkan Battle may show him with both arms intact, likely due to censorship reasons or game mechanics, as seen in Shin Budokai - Another Road where he is fully revived.
  • Some recent games feature Future Gohan with only one arm, including the LR Future Gohan & Future Trunks in Dokkan Battle, Legends Limited Future Gohan in Dragon Ball Legends, and the -Trunks The Warrior of Hope DLC in Kakarot. In these games, Future Gohan is depicted with his arm loss and is playable in his one-armed form. The upcoming Sparking! Zero will also feature one-armed Future Gohan.
  • Although Future Gohan does not appear in Dragon Ball Xenoverse, his adult main timeline counterpart is used in a Parallel Quest set in a time fragment timeline similar to Future Trunks' timeline, with Time Patrol assisting Future Trunks against Androids 17 & 18. This is not the first instance of Adult Gohan being used as a stand-in for Future Gohan, as seen in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2.
  • In Xenoverse 2, the Parallel Quest from Dragon Ball Xenoverse returns with the actual Future Gohan instead of Adult Gohan.
  • The Unknown History Saga's story suggests Future Gohan defeated the Androids with Time Patrol Future Trunks in his Super Saiyan form. However, players can choose Future Gohan's base or Super Saiyan form to fight the Androids, and he may defeat them in his base form.
  • The Future Gohan in Conton City might be from after defeating the Androids in the Unknown History Saga, as he defeats Future Androids from another timeline using his base form, implying he continued to train and unlock more potential during the years of peace before being brought to Conton City.
  • In Xenoverse 2, if the Future Warrior talks to Future Gohan while wearing Future Trunks' attire, Gohan will express a positive sentiment about the outfit.
  • In Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Future Gohan has special pre-match dialogue with Future Trunks, Android 17 & 18, Gohan, Goku, Dr. Gero, and Goten.
  • In Xenoverse 2, Future Gohan also has special dialogue with several characters including his main timeline counterpart (Adult/Great Saiyaman), Goten, Kid/GT Trunks, Future Trunks (DBZ/Xeno), Videl (Base/Great Saiyaman 2), Goku (Base/GT), Bardock (Base/Xeno), Piccolo, Krillin, Vegeta (Base), Android 16, Android 17 (representing Future 17), and Android 18 (representing Future 18).
  • When confronting Adult Gohan in Xenoverse 2, Future Gohan says, "You're me but from a different future," while Adult Gohan responds with "Huh? So you're...," suggesting he recognizes Future Gohan from Trunks' timeline.
  • When facing Great Saiyaman, Future Gohan remarks, "The me from this era seems to be having a blast," showing he has no issue with his counterpart's superhero persona.
  • Early Vietnamese publications of the manga inaccurately attributed Future Gohan's death to tetanus instead of being killed by Androids 17 and 18, but this was corrected in later editions.
