As Max Dillon's birthday approached, he began fantasizing about a surprise party thrown by Spider-Man, imagining the deep friendship he believed they shared. In his apartment, Max acted out this fantasy, turning on all the electronics in the house to shave and eating a small cake he had bought for himself. However, the prolonged use of the electronics caused the apartment's fuse to blow, forcing Max to manually restore the power using his electrical skills.

After restoring the power, Max checked on his mother, who was reliant on a breathing machine due to her constant smoking. When she tried to light another cigarette, Max angrily smacked it out of her hand, reminding her of the dangers to her health. Instead of heeding his warning, Mrs. Dillon berated him, leaving Max feeling humiliated and powerless. In his mind, Max imagined standing up to his mother, berating her for her dangerous choices, but in reality, he quietly endured her criticism as he worked to restore the power.

Later, at work, Max was ordered by his superior, Alistair Smythe, to check some faulty cables. On his way to the task, Max encountered Gwen Stacy in the elevator, and he eagerly talked to her about how Spider-Man had once saved his life. He was pleasantly surprised that Gwen remembered his name, as few people ever did.

When Max found an unplugged cable, he asked a co-worker to cut the power so he could safely fix it. However, the co-worker had already left, leaving Max to handle the dangerous task alone. As Max attempted to plug in the live cable, he was electrocuted, causing him to fall into a tank containing genetically modified electric eels. The eels attacked him, shocking him with massive amounts of electricity, seemingly killing him. This tragic accident marked the beginning of Max Dillon's transformation into Electro.
