Maxwell "Max" Dillon was an electrical engineer working at Oscorp Industries. Often overlooked and feeling like a "nobody," his life took a dramatic turn after being saved and acknowledged by Spider-Man, leading to an obsession with the hero.
On his birthday, while staying late at work, Max was tasked with repairing a broken power line. While balancing on a railing to fix the circuit, he was unexpectedly shocked with electricity, causing him to fall into a tank of genetically modified electric eels. The eels attacked him, and the tank eventually shattered. This accident transformed Max into a being of pure electrical energy. He later received a suit from Harry Osborn and took on the identity of Electro.
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Electro was brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to Peter Parker's interference with a spell cast by Doctor Strange. Given a second chance in a world filled with new energy, Max was determined to finally make the world see him for who he truly was.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Before becoming Electro, Max Dillon saw himself as a "nobody" in society—awkward, timid, and deeply introverted, but still naturally kind. After gaining his electrical powers and adopting the identity of Electro, Dillon transformed into an egotistical, power-hungry, and arrogant individual. He took immense pride in his newfound abilities, relishing the attention and recognition they brought him. This desire for power led him to develop a god complex, and he became willing to harm anyone who stood in his way. However, he showed some restraint, as he seemingly offered to spare Spider-Man's life if Spider-Man gave him the Macchina di Kadavus.
Dillon's gullibility was evident when Doctor Octopus tricked him into thinking he was still an ally, leading to the temporary loss of his powers. He was also easily manipulated, as demonstrated when the Green Goblin convinced him to retain his powers by appealing to his thirst for power. Dillon believed that holding onto his abilities was the only way to save himself, fearing that without them, he would revert to being the "nobody" he once was.
Despite his flaws, Dillon showed empathy towards those who understood his struggles, particularly Sandman, upon learning that they both gained their powers through similar accidents. He also expressed sympathy towards Norman Osborn and Otto Octavius, feeling a kinship with them. Additionally, Dillon showed concern for others, notably when he worried about Octavius after the young Peter Parker installed a new Inhibitor Chip on Doctor Octopus' neck.
After being cured by Octavius and the Spider-Men, Dillon felt saddened by the prospect of becoming a "nobody" again. However, his spirits were lifted by a heartfelt conversation with his Spider-Man, leading to a reconciliation. Dillon harbored no hard feelings towards Octavius for tricking him and was grateful to him for rescuing him when the Statue of Liberty collapsed, revealing that beneath his transformation into Electro, he remained a kind-hearted man.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Oscorp Employee[edit | edit source]
Max Dillon lived a life largely unnoticed by others, never receiving the recognition or acknowledgment he desperately craved. He worked as an electrical engineer at Oscorp Industries, where his existence was largely lonely and unfulfilling. Max's life at Oscorp was marked by bullying, particularly from his co-worker Alistair Smythe. He occasionally worked with Dr. Curt Connors, a brilliant scientist at Oscorp, and later learned about how Connors transformed into the Lizard and attempted to turn everyone in New York City into lizards before being defeated by Spider-Man.
Max's frustrations deepened when Oscorp accepted designs for their power grid, including many of his own contributions. However, despite using his designs, Oscorp rejected his proposals and failed to credit him, which added to Max's growing annoyance and sense of being overlooked.
Meeting Spider-Man[edit | edit source]
One day, while delivering blueprints to Oscorp, Max Dillon found himself caught in the chaos of a police chase involving Alexsei Sytsevich. As he struggled with his hands full of blueprints, a random pedestrian bumped into him, causing the papers to scatter onto the road. At that moment, a taxi, thrown into the air during the chase, came hurtling toward Max. Just as it seemed he was in danger, Spider-Man swooped in and saved him.
After the taxi crash, Spider-Man helped Max to his feet and asked if he was alright. The bewildered Max stammered in awe at the fact that he was speaking to Spider-Man, who joked about how his costume made it obvious. Spider-Man then webbed up Max's blueprints, remarking that they looked important, and called him by name. Surprised, Max asked how Spider-Man knew his name, to which the hero replied that it was written on his nametag.
Max confessed that he felt like a "nobody," but Spider-Man reassured him that he was a "somebody." In a lighthearted moment, Spider-Man asked Max to lick his glove, which he did, and then used the glove to comb Max's hair, further boosting his spirits. Spider-Man told Max that he needed him as his "eyes and ears in New York," which thrilled Max. Before swinging off to continue the chase, Spider-Man promised to see Max later.
This encounter left Max ecstatic. Being acknowledged by Spider-Man, a famous hero, made him feel seen and valued for the first time. Over the following months, Max became obsessed with his "friendship" with Spider-Man. He devoted his life to the hero, even calling into a radio station to defend Spider-Man against criticism. During the call, Max recounted how Spider-Man had saved him, embellishing the story by claiming that they had become friends afterward. This moment solidified Max's deep, albeit one-sided, connection to Spider-Man.
Birthday[edit | edit source]
Becoming Electro[edit | edit source]
As Max Dillon's birthday approached, he began fantasizing about a surprise party thrown by Spider-Man, imagining the deep friendship he believed they shared. In his apartment, Max acted out this fantasy, turning on all the electronics in the house to shave and eating a small cake he had bought for himself. However, the prolonged use of the electronics caused the apartment's fuse to blow, forcing Max to manually restore the power using his electrical skills.
After restoring the power, Max checked on his mother, who was reliant on a breathing machine due to her constant smoking. When she tried to light another cigarette, Max angrily smacked it out of her hand, reminding her of the dangers to her health. Instead of heeding his warning, Mrs. Dillon berated him, leaving Max feeling humiliated and powerless. In his mind, Max imagined standing up to his mother, berating her for her dangerous choices, but in reality, he quietly endured her criticism as he worked to restore the power.
Later, at work, Max was ordered by his superior, Alistair Smythe, to check some faulty cables. On his way to the task, Max encountered Gwen Stacy in the elevator, and he eagerly talked to her about how Spider-Man had once saved his life. He was pleasantly surprised that Gwen remembered his name, as few people ever did.
When Max found an unplugged cable, he asked a co-worker to cut the power so he could safely fix it. However, the co-worker had already left, leaving Max to handle the dangerous task alone. As Max attempted to plug in the live cable, he was electrocuted, causing him to fall into a tank containing genetically modified electric eels. The eels attacked him, shocking him with massive amounts of electricity, seemingly killing him. This tragic accident marked the beginning of Max Dillon's transformation into Electro.
Electro's War[edit | edit source]
First Clash with Spider-Man[edit | edit source]
After his transformation, Max Dillon, now Electro, awakens in the morgue, confused and terrified by what has happened to him. Stumbling into the city, he inadvertently charges up on electricity at Times Square, which causes a commotion among the police and New York citizens due to his strange appearance and new abilities.
Initially frightened and trying to reassure everyone that he means no harm, Max is suddenly captivated when he sees himself on the Jumbotron. For the first time in his life, people are finally noticing him. When Spider-Man arrives, Electro is shocked that his hero does not remember him. However, after reminding Spider-Man of their previous encounter, the hero appears to recall who he is. Spider-Man tries to calm the situation and succeeds in convincing Max to talk. Unfortunately, a police sniper fires at Max, causing him to retaliate. This leads to Electro being humiliated in front of the crowd by Spider-Man. As the crowd mocks him, the voices in Electro's head manipulate him into believing that Spider-Man has deceived and lied to him. Enraged, Electro attacks Spider-Man and appears to defeat him.
After seemingly defeating Spider-Man, Electro's anger and the manipulative voices drive him to take revenge on the public. However, Spider-Man returns and ultimately defeats Electro by dousing him with water, leading to Max being sent to Ravencroft Institute.
Escaping from Ravencroft[edit | edit source]
Max is taken to the Ravencroft Institute, where he is experimented on by Dr. Ashley Kafka in a basement. Electro threatens Kafka multiple times, declaring his intention to "kill the light" and bring about "a world without power, a world without mercy, and a world without Spider-Man." After being asked who he is, Max ominously replies, "I'm Electro," while demonstrating his power by blasting a hole through the doctor's glasses.
After Harry Osborn is ousted as CEO of Oscorp, he visits Electro at Ravencroft. When Harry finds Max in the basement, he begins to talk to him. Although Max initially threatens to kill Harry, the young Osborn convinces him to think bigger, claiming that they do not have much time and that he needs Max's help. This is possibly the first time anyone has ever told Max they needed him, and he is visibly moved by Harry's words.
When the guards attack Harry, he gives Max more power by tasing him. Electro then transforms into pure energy and incapacitates all the guards in the room. Appearing in front of Harry, Max initially hesitates, but Harry reassures him that they are already friends, convincing Electro to join forces. With a newfound resolve, Max agrees, and the two vow to kill Spider-Man together.
Infiltrating Oscorp[edit | edit source]
Electro receives a new suit to help control his powers, and with Harry's assistance, they successfully break into Oscorp and confront Menken. Harry leads Menken to the last of the spider venom, hoping it will cure his disease. In the meantime, Electro takes control of New York's electrical grid, which he designed, planning to use it to further his goals.
Second and Final Battle with Spider-Man[edit | edit source]
At some point, Electro learns that Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. He shuts down most of the city's power to draw Spider-Man out for a final confrontation. After modifying his web-shooters with Gwen Stacy's help, Spider-Man leaves Gwen to face Electro alone. During the battle, Electro taunts Spider-Man and proves resistant to his initial attacks, including water. However, Gwen intervenes by hitting Electro with a NYPD car, temporarily stunning him.
After a brief argument, Spider-Man and Gwen agree on a plan to overload Electro and make him explode like a battery. As Electro recovers and resumes his attack on Spider-Man, the hero successfully webs up multiple power plugs. Following Spider-Man's command, Gwen activates the power, causing Electro's energy to be drained. In his final moments, Electro screams in pain before exploding into pieces.
Arrival to an Alternate Universe[edit | edit source]
Just Before Explosion[edit | edit source]
Right before Max Dillon, now known as Electro, was about to explode from being overloaded with energy during his final battle against Spider-Man, he was suddenly pulled from his timeline. This occurred as a result of a botched magic spell cast by Doctor Strange in an alternate universe, specifically the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The spell was intended to make everyone forget that Peter Parker was Spider-Man, but it inadvertently almost brought countless individuals from the Multiverse who knew Spider-Man's identity into the MCU. While Doctor Strange managed to contain the spell, a few individuals, including an alternate version of Max Dillon, were pulled into the MCU.
Capture of Electro[edit | edit source]
Upon arriving in the MCU during the year 2024, Electro, who was attempting to absorb electricity from power lines, caught the attention of this universe's Spider-Man. When Spider-Man questioned if Electro was from another universe, Electro did not respond. As Spider-Man attempted to capture him using magic webs from his Web-Shooters, Electro jolted awake and retaliated by blasting yellow bolts of electricity at the web-slinger.
In the ensuing battle, Electro charged at Spider-Man with another electric bolt, only to be blocked by Sandman, who appeared as a wall of sand to protect Spider-Man. This Sandman was from yet another alternate universe (the Raimi universe). Spider-Man and Sandman worked together to neutralize Electro, with Sandman transforming into a sand typhoon to swirl around Electro while Spider-Man severed power lines to weaken him.
As Electro's power diminished, his body began to grow dimmer, and eventually, he fell to the ground in his human form. Upon standing up, Electro realized that he had regained a physical body, though it was slightly different due to the energy disparity between his universe and the new one. Spider-Man and Sandman approached him, with Spider-Man explaining that they were in a different universe. Electro admitted that he could feel the difference in the electricity and that he liked it, his eyes flashing with power.
Sandman tried to calm Electro down, while Spider-Man took responsibility for Electro's presence in the new universe. Electro, confused, asked if Spider-Man meant the universe or the woods they were in, noting his dislike for the woods. Spider-Man clarified that he meant the universe. The encounter ended with Electro humorously pointing out that he was naked, prompting Spider-Man to notice and hand him some nearby line worker clothes.
Imprisoned at the Sanctum[edit | edit source]
Arrival and Interactions[edit | edit source]
After getting dressed, Electro was teleported by MCU's Spider-Man to a cell in the New York Sanctum, using magic webs. Upon arriving, Electro noticed Spider-Man's friends, Michelle Jones (MJ) and Ned Leeds. He also saw an alternate version of Doctor Octopus (from the Raimi universe), who waved at him from another cell. When Sandman was teleported to a cell as well, Electro remarked that Sandman had picked the wrong side.
Electro then heard a familiar laugh and recognized the Lizard, an alternate version of his former Oscorp colleague, Doctor Curt Connors. Shocked to see Connors, Electro clarified to Doctor Octopus that the "creature" was actually a man, leading Ned to realize that Electro and the Lizard were from the same universe. Electro explained Lizard's background to everyone, while Lizard described his attempt to transform humanity as the next step in evolution. The Lizard then commented on Electro's new appearance, suggesting that he could give him a "real makeover," to which Electro sarcastically responded, asking if it would involve turning him into a lizard.
As MJ mentioned that they were in a wizard's dungeon, Electro dismissed the notion of magic, expressing more interest in experimenting with the new energy he felt in this universe. His hands glowed, causing the overhead lights to flicker. When Ned asked if a tree in one of the cells was a monster or a scientist transformed into a tree, Electro reassured him that it was just a tree.
Meeting Norman Osborn[edit | edit source]
The next morning, Electro met another alternate universe version of his former boss, Norman Osborn, who was brought to the Sanctum by Spider-Man. Electro learned that Osborn knew Doctor Octopus and that both of them, like Sandman, were from the same universe (Earth-96283). He overheard their conversation, with Osborn mentioning that he was supposed to be dead, which fascinated Electro even more. Electro admitted that he loved this new universe and became intrigued by the two scientists. He also witnessed Spider-Man defending Osborn, explaining to Doctor Octopus that Osborn was not dead and was standing right in front of them.
Learning of His Fate[edit | edit source]
As the conversation continued, Sandman explained to Osborn and Octopus that both of them had died fighting their respective Spider-Man. Doctor Octopus realized that his last memory before arriving in this universe was fighting his Spider-Man. Electro shared his own experience of his final fight with his Spider-Man but couldn't recall what happened when he was stuck in the grid, making him realize that he was about to die at that moment. Hearing this, Curt Connors asked Dillon if he had died.
At that moment, Doctor Strange teleported into the area with the Macchina di Kadavus, a device he intended to use to send the Multiversal visitors back to their respective universes. However, Dillon, Octopus, and Osborn resisted, knowing that they would face their deaths upon returning. As Strange prepared the Macchina, the villains became increasingly nervous and uneasy. Suddenly, Spider-Man stole the Macchina from Strange, initiating the Battle for the Macchina di Kadavus. After winning the battle, Spider-Man returned to the Sanctum's basement through an Inter-Dimensional Portal.
Spider-Man's Offer[edit | edit source]
Spider-Man offered to help the villains by fixing what happened to them so that when they returned to their universes, they would not die fighting their respective Spider-Man. Dillon, not wanting to die, especially at Strange's hands, asked Spider-Man what his plan was. MJ mentioned that she would use the Macchina if something went wrong, to which Dillon skeptically responded, questioning if they all believed her. After Ned and MJ left, Spider-Man asked who was willing to go along with his plan. Dillon agreed but warned that if things went sideways, he would fry Spider-Man from the inside out.
Staying at Happy Hogan's Condominium[edit | edit source]
Arrival and Exploration[edit | edit source]
Electro and the other villains were transported to Happy Hogan's condominium inside a F.E.A.S.T. truck by Spider-Man and his Aunt May. While the Lizard stayed behind in the truck, the others entered the apartment. As they made their way through the entrance, Electro caused the security camera footage to glitch as he walked past it, using his powers to turn on the TV, which was broadcasting news about the renovation of the Statue of Liberty. Sensing something powerful, Electro followed Spider-Man into the storage room, where he was introduced to the Stark Industries Fabricator. The Fabricator revealed the Arc Reactor, which immediately caught Electro's attention as his eyes flashed with interest.
Contemplation and Reflection[edit | edit source]
Later that night, while Spider-Man and Norman Osborn worked on a Neural Inhibitor Chip for Doctor Octopus, Electro stood by the windows, gazing out at the world. He mused about the possibilities in this new universe and admitted to Sandman that he liked who he had become here. Electro was especially intrigued by the Arc Reactor, seeing it as a source of immense power that could make him "so much more." When Sandman asked why Electro had come along, Electro explained that he was drawn to the potential of this new place. The two villains shared their tragic origins—Electro fell into a vat of electric eels, and Sandman into a supercollider—bonding over their shared experiences of being transformed by scientific accidents. Electro remarked that they needed to be careful where they would "fall."
The Cure and Growing Unease[edit | edit source]
Once Spider-Man finished the Neural Inhibitor Chip, he suspended Doctor Octopus in the loft area, where Electro and the others watched anxiously. As the Chip was implanted onto Doctor Octopus's tentacles, the villain passed out, but upon waking, Otto Octavius was cured. Electro observed this with a mix of shock and disappointment, realizing that the situation was becoming real and irreversible.
Electro then sat at the kitchen table with Spider-Man, who held out Electro's cure. Spider-Man placed the device on Electro's chest, explaining that when all the indicator lights turned green, it meant that the electricity in his body had been dissipated—though not all of it, as Electro needed some to survive. As the device started to activate, Electro became increasingly uneasy. He checked the indicator lights, with one already flashing green, and expressed his discomfort with the cure to Sandman. Despite Sandman's advice to leave it alone so they could return home, Electro was troubled as more indicators flashed green, signaling the siphoning of his power.
Escape from Spider-Man[edit | edit source]
As Electro's siphon was nearly complete, Norman Osborn's Green Goblin persona emerged, persuading Electro that they were "gods" and didn't need to be cured. With this newfound resolve, Electro tore off the siphon device and seized the Arc Reactor. He then used his electricity to blast Doctor Octopus out of the building, remarking that he preferred him before the cure. Electro proceeded to create a hole in the building, causing a blackout throughout the condominium. With the Arc Reactor in hand, he escaped the chaos, leaving behind the damage control teams and The Daily Bugle, who were stationed below, as he fled into the city.
Battle of Liberty Island[edit | edit source]
Arrival and Confrontation[edit | edit source]
Electro, along with Sandman and the Lizard, went to the Statue of Liberty to confront the MCU's Spider-Man. This Spider-Man was aided by the Spider-Men from Electro's and Lizard's universes and the Raimi universe. Upon his arrival, Electro's new enhanced powers, fueled by the Arc Reactor, illuminated him. He demanded that Spider-Man give him the Macchina di Kadavus so he could destroy it, warning that he didn't want to become a murderer but would do what was necessary. When Spider-Man refused, Electro chased him across the battlefield in his attempt to obtain the box.
Battle and Resistance[edit | edit source]
During the fight, Electro encountered his universe's Spider-Man, who expressed that he missed him. Electro dismissed this sentiment, accusing his Spider-Man of never truly wanting to help him. Emboldened by the Arc Reactor's power, Electro continued his relentless attack. As the battle intensified, Sandman and Lizard joined the fray. Sandman sought the box while Lizard fought the other Spider-Man. In the chaos, Electro attacked a crane the Spider-Men were on, causing it to collapse and trap Lizard. Sandman retaliated by creating a sandstorm around the Statue of Liberty, with Electro's lightning lighting up the storm.
Electro then pursued the MCU's Spider-Man again. Despite the combined efforts of all three Spider-Men to take away the Arc Reactor, Electro easily overpowered them, confidently declaring that they wouldn't succeed. Even when his own Spider-Man attempted to stop him, Electro used his electricity to subdue him, causing him to drop Electro's cure.
Cured and Reconciliation[edit | edit source]
As the battle reached its climax, Doctor Octopus arrived and grabbed the two alternate Spider-Men with his tentacles, feigning loyalty to Electro. However, Octavius betrayed him by seizing the Arc Reactor from Electro, revealing his true intentions. Horrified and betrayed, Electro could do nothing as Octavius used the opportunity to implant the cure onto his chest. This act stripped Electro of his powers, reverting him to his human form as Max Dillon.
Now cured and back to his original self, Dillon let go of his hostility toward his Spider-Man. When his Spider-Man approached him, a dejected Dillon lamented that he was once again a nobody. Spider-Man reassured him that he was never a nobody, but Dillon remained doubtful. Despite his lingering sadness, Dillon acknowledged that Spider-Man had helped a lot of people, showing a shift in his perspective.
Aftermath and Return to His Universe[edit | edit source]
Dillon later witnessed the arrival of the Green Goblin and was saved by Doctor Octopus when a Pumpkin Bomb destroyed the Macchina di Kadavus and caused the Statue of Liberty's shield to fall into the water. After the Green Goblin was defeated and the other villains were cured, Doctor Strange cast the final spell to send all the multiversal visitors back to their original universes. As a consequence, everyone in the MCU would forget the identity of their universe's Spider-Man.
Dillon was returned to the moment just before he was about to explode in his original universe, but this time in a branched/alternate timeline. Since he was cured of his powers, it is likely he avoided being struck by the immense load of electricity that originally led to his demise. In this new timeline, Dillon could potentially have a new fate, possibly aiding Spider-Man against his own Green Goblin and helping save Gwen Stacy, given the rapport he seemed to have developed with his Spider-Man during the events at Liberty Island.
