Power Nullification, or Negation, is the ability to nullify the powers and abilities of others, preventing or disabling their effects. The mechanisms and restrictions of this ability vary among characters. Often, it is limited to certain types of powers, such as supernatural phenomena or magic. Some characters can only negate an ability once it has been activated, while others can nullify powers before they are used. The effect can be temporary or permanent and may be restricted by touch, vision, or applied within a field that negates any powers within.

Some characters achieve these effects through applications of other abilities rather than as a standalone power. For example, they might use Power Modification to render powers useless. Additionally, some characters combine this ability with Power Mimicry, allowing them not only to seal others' abilities but also to steal them, a process known as Power Absorption.

It would be a No Limits Fallacy to assume someone with this ability can nullify anything that falls within the phenomena their powers are designed to counter. It should be assumed that any negation power has its limitations based on the strongest ability it has nullified. Moreover, some characters may be resistant to the nullification ability, preventing it from having its usual effects.

However, certain forms of Power Nullification may prevent the use of powers through less direct methods, making resistance less effective and the strength of the nullification less relevant.

Types

Anti-Magic: Abilities that focus on nullifying magic, potentially even rejecting physical enhancements granted by magic or making the user completely immune to magical harm. This can negate a range of spells, from simple blasts to complex effects, and may also strip magical items of their enchantments and properties.

While effective against magic users, this ability does not affect non-magical supernatural abilities, such as those based on chi. A similar ability, known as Counterspelling, involves characters countering spells and magical abilities through their own magical knowledge, often requiring some understanding of the spell to do so.

Resistance Negation: The ability to remove an opponent's capacity to resist the effects of other powers, allowing the user to affect them with those abilities. In extreme cases, this can even override apparent immunity.

However, merely overwhelming an opponent with powers stronger than their normal resistance does not qualify as Resistance Negation. Keep in mind, there are limits to this ability; characters with Resistance Negation cannot negate all of an opponent's resistances unless their power extends beyond what has been demonstrated.
