Zen'ō (全ぜん王おう, lit. "Omni-King") is the sovereign ruler of all twelve universes in the Dragon Ball multiverse. Despite his child-like appearance and demeanor, Zen'ō's power is unparalleled, instilling fear even in the Angels and the Gods of Destruction. His capabilities are so immense that he once obliterated six of the original eighteen universes in a moment of anger. Following the events of the "Future" Trunks Saga, Zen'ō now co-rules alongside his future counterpart, sharing authority over the multiverse.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Zen'ō is diminutive in stature, with a small body contrasted by a large, oval-shaped head. His skin is predominantly sky blue, but there are distinct purple sections extending from his ears to the center of each eye on both sides of his face. He has small, round eyes and grey, rounded "ears." Zen'ō's attire consists of a magenta coat with yellow lining, paired with yellow pants and magenta shoes. Beneath his coat, he wears a black and white shirt adorned with the kanji for "all" (全) on the front. His expression is typically blank, contributing to his enigmatic and child-like demeanor.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Zen'ō, the Omni-King, exhibits a complex and paradoxical personality. Despite his child-like demeanor, he displays an unsettling indifference towards life and the cosmos. His actions reflect a lack of concern for the existence of others, highlighted by his casual destruction of six out of the eighteen original universes in a fit of anger. This callousness is further emphasized in a game he played with his future counterpart, where they destroyed planets 202 times without apparent remorse.

In the manga version of the Universe Survival Saga, the Grand Minister suggests that Zen'ō's destruction of the six universes was not purely out of anger but also stemmed from a belief that there were too many universes to manage effectively. Zen'ō viewed the Tournament of Power as an ideal opportunity to reduce the number of universes further, implying he finds the task of overseeing them burdensome.

Zen'ō's indifference extends to his peers, including other deities. He is unmoved by the suffering of others, such as when he remains unaffected by Supreme Kai Roh's desperate pleas during the erasure of his universe. Zen'ō's actions also hint at a degree of sadism or a profound lack of empathy. After erasing Universe 9, he and his future counterpart bid it farewell with a light-hearted "bye-bye," and they even expressed delight by saying "squish" while erasing Universe 3.

Additionally, Zen'ō appears unable to comprehend the gravity of his actions. During the Tournament of Power, he and his future self are puzzled when the combatants cease fighting after witnessing the erasure of an entire universe. This lack of understanding underscores his detachment from the consequences of his immense power, reinforcing his enigmatic and otherworldly nature.

Interestingly, despite his seemingly detached and often ruthless behavior, Zen'ō and his future counterpart exhibit a surprising level of wisdom and foresight in the anime. The Grand Minister reveals that they intended the prize for the Tournament of Power, the wish granted by the Super Dragon Balls, to be used for a noble purpose, such as restoring the erased universes. Had the wish been selfish, Zen'ō was prepared to erase all existence, including the exempt universes, as it would have signified that none of the universes deserved to continue existing.

Moreover, Zen'ō displays a degree of flexibility and tolerance, occasionally reversing his previous decisions and showing openness to new ideas. He accepted Bergamo's proposal to cancel the destruction of the losing universes if he could defeat Goku, despite having already decided on their fate. He also allowed Top's challenge to Goku to be added as a fourth match in the Zeno Expo, even though the event had concluded. During the Tournament of Power, Zen'ō's leniency permitted the use of the Evil Containment Wave and Potara earrings, despite these being potential rule violations. However, he does have limits; for example, he immediately erased Frost when he attempted to attack from outside the ring and threatened to erase Universe 6 to prevent further misconduct.

Zen'ō's child-like behavior and lack of formal interactions with others suggest a possible loneliness. His immense power and status create a barrier to forming genuine friendships, as those around him either fear his power or treat him with extreme formality. His attendants and the Grand Minister cater to his every whim without question, leaving little room for meaningful companionship. This isolation is highlighted by Zen'ō's comfort with physical contact, as seen in his acceptance of Goku's handshake and the unbothered reaction of his future counterpart to Goku's hug. Zen'ō's interactions with Goku, characterized by playful and physical engagement, likely stem from his desire for genuine connection amidst the formality that surrounds him.

Zeno immediately took a liking to Goku, drawn to the Saiyan's similarly childlike, innocent, and naive personality. Goku's enthusiasm for the extraordinary and his excitement over the unusual resonated with Zeno. This connection was evident when Zeno, fascinated by a good fight, became interested in organizing a tournament after watching Goku's battle against Hit. Unlike others who fear Zeno's power, Goku's informal and direct approach allowed him to interact closely with the small deity, including lifting him off the ground in a handshake.

Zeno's fondness for Goku led him to ask the Saiyan to become his friend and even gave him the affectionate nickname "Zenny." He appreciates Goku's plain-speaking nature and dislikes when others, out of fear, attempt to speak on Goku's behalf, believing they know what Zeno wants to hear. This candid and straightforward demeanor is refreshing to Zeno, who has spent eons surrounded by subjects and attendants who tread carefully around him.

Although Beerus suggests that Goku's friendship with Zeno is merely a form of entertainment for the omnipotent being, it is clear that Zeno genuinely values their bond. Zeno was grateful when Goku suggested that Present Zeno befriend his future timeline counterpart, providing the King of All with a true peer and equal who understands him completely. Throughout the Tournament of Power, Zeno consistently showed concern for Goku, expressing worry whenever Goku came close to losing, such as almost falling out of the ring with Nink. He even admitted that Goku's universe losing would make him "very sad," highlighting the depth of his friendship with the Saiyan.

Even more notably, Zeno showed deep concern when he believed Goku had been killed by his own Spirit Bomb during the fight with Jiren. Unlike previous eliminations, Zeno hesitated to push the button to eliminate Goku, doing so very slowly and reluctantly. This hesitation was unprecedented and highlighted his genuine worry for Goku. When Goku miraculously survived and emerged with a new, "sparkly" appearance, Zeno was visibly overjoyed, nearly moved to tears, and expressed great admiration for Goku's new power. This admiration was echoed again during Goku's battle with Kefla.

At the end of the Tournament of Power, both Zeno and his future counterpart were ecstatic when Universe 7 emerged victorious. They were clearly relieved that they did not have to erase Goku, their only other true friend. Their happiness was evident as they parted with Goku in a joyful and playful fist pump, making it clear they wanted to see him again.

However, Goku is not the only one Zeno and Future Zeno respect or admire. During the Zen Exhibition Match, they expressed a liking for Buu due to his goofy, high-spirited, and childlike nature, which mirrors their own. The Zenos also found Jiren "cool," even mimicking his poses at times. They admired Gohan, referring to him as "Goku's son" and getting excited when he turned Super Saiyan to fight Lavender, and calling him "the coolest" when he fought Dyspo. Vegeta, too, earned their fascination with his prideful and powerful combat style.

Despite Zeno's immense power and authority, his childish and naive nature often leads to impulsive and irresponsible decisions. Therefore, the Grand Minister frequently handles the more serious and responsible matters, effectively acting as Zeno's grand vizier. The Grand Minister controls a significant portion of Zeno's authority, guiding and managing the more complex aspects of his rule.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

At some point in time, Zeno destroyed 6 of the original 18 universes, reducing their number to 12. In the manga, he once held an All Universe Hide and Seek Tournament. However, the event had to be canceled when Beerus, hiding too well and falling asleep for fifty years, couldn't be found. Zeno, who was greatly enjoying the tournament, became furious, and it took the efforts of the gods from the remaining 11 universes to calm him down.

Dragon Ball Super[edit | edit source]

Universe 6 Saga[edit | edit source]

Zeno first appears during the Tournament of Destroyers, watching from a distance away on the Nameless Planet. After the tournament concludes, Champa, enraged by his team's loss, prepares to destroy his own team. As Beerus warns Goku that he cannot defeat Champa yet, Zeno and his attendants arrive, instantly halting all hostility.

The mere presence of Zeno leaves Beerus and Champa utterly mortified and shocked. Zeno explains that he visited out of concern that Beerus and Champa were neglecting their duties as Gods of Destruction. He inquires about their performance, to which Whis responds that Beerus is more interested in sleeping and eating than fulfilling his responsibilities. Vados adds that Champa is obsessed with food and has grown fat as a result, often complaining about the quality of the food she serves him.

Hearing this, Zeno jokes about getting new Destroyers, which sends Beerus and Champa into a panic, only for him to reveal that he was joking.

When Goku attempts to approach Zeno, Zeno's attendants immediately shield him. However, Zeno permits Goku to speak directly to him. After a moment of hesitation, Zeno accepts Goku's handshake, lifting the small deity off the ground in the process. After their brief interaction, Zeno departs with his attendants.

"Future" Trunks Saga[edit | edit source]

While Beerus and Whis are at their temple, Beerus impatiently awaits his meal. A call comes in, and Beerus answers dismissively, telling the caller to reach out later. However, he is immediately shocked and terrified upon realizing that the caller is Zeno. In a panic, Beerus bows so deeply that he accidentally breaks his table with his head. He nervously asks Zeno how his day has been, profusely thanking him for taking the time to call.

Zeno, unfazed by Beerus's reaction, requests to meet Goku, which leaves Beerus and Whis stunned and uneasy.

Following Zeno's request, Beerus instructs Whis to take Goku to Zeno's palace, accompanied by Shin. Upon their arrival, Zeno warmly greets Goku and asks if he would be his friend, lamenting that everyone else is too frightened of his power to socialize with him effectively. When Goku hesitates, Shin anxiously tries to speak on his behalf, but Zeno silences him, allowing Goku to respond directly. Goku agrees to be his friend and suggests calling him "Zenny," a proposal that shocks everyone present.

Zeno is delighted by this and gives Goku a button that, when pressed, will summon the Omni-King to him immediately. Goku promises to bring Zeno a friend who is even more fun than he is once he finishes his business on Earth.

After the events leading to the destruction and erasure of Fused Zamasu and the future timeline's world, Goku and Future Trunks return to find the timeline's Zeno floating alone in an empty cyan void. They decide to bring Future Zeno to the present timeline so that he can have a friend in his present timeline counterpart.

Upon arriving at Present Zeno's palace, Present Zeno rushes to meet them and is pleasantly surprised to see his future counterpart. Following Goku's suggestion, both Zenos decide to play together, overjoyed to have finally found a friend in each other.

Universe Survival Saga[edit | edit source]

Following the defeat of Zamasu, Goku reminds Zeno and his future counterpart of the promised tournament. Delighted, the Zenos agree to host the event, with the Super Dragon Balls as the coveted prize, akin to the previous tournament between Champa and Beerus. However, a critical rule of the Tournament of Power is established: any universe that loses in this tournament faces complete erasure by the ruling duo.

Before the main Tournament of Power commences, Future Zeno suggests a preliminary tournament to set expectations. The Grand Minister arranges for Universe 7 and Universe 9 to each select three warriors for this preliminary contest. Universe 7 chooses Good Buu, Gohan, and Goku, while Universe 9 opts for the Trio of Danger: Basil, Lavender, and Bergamo, three formidable siblings.

High above an arena specially manifested in the Null Realm, all the gods, Supreme Kais, Gods of Destruction, Angels, Zenos, and their attendants gather to witness the matches. The rules of the preliminary tournament are soon laid out, setting the stage for the epic battles to come in the Tournament of Power.

After determining the matchups, the preliminary matches commence. Majin Buu faces Basil, resulting in Buu emerging victorious in their clash. The subsequent battle between Gohan and Lavender ends in a draw when both fighters collapse from their intense fight. The Zenos, impressed by the displays of strength and strategy, allow underhanded tactics to play out as they observe, setting precedents for the main tournament. The Grand Minister, ensuring order, sternly glares at Beerus to maintain decorum amidst the excitement.

Before the final exhibition match, Bergamo appeals to Zeno to spare the universes from erasure if Universe 9 loses. Though initially adamant, the Zenos agree to Bergamo's request on the condition that he wins his fight against Goku. During Goku and Bergamo's battle, Future Zeno is astonished by the power of Super Saiyan Blue, which his counterpart explains to him. They are further amazed when Goku amplifies his power with Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken, decisively defeating Bergamo and affirming their decision to uphold erasure for the losing universes.

Following Goku's match, Top from Universe 11 challenges him. Surprised but intrigued, both Zenos allow the match to proceed. They eagerly anticipate the battle but are disappointed when the Grand Minister intervenes to preserve the fighters' strength for the Tournament of Power.

As the Tournament of Power arena is completed in the World of Void, Zeno and Future Zeno marvel at its grandeur, playfully exploring and massaging the surface. In gratitude, Zeno offers the Grand Minister a piece of candy, much to his delight. Throughout the tournament, the Zenos watch with wonder as the battles unfold, using their GodPads to track eliminations and remain engaged in the event's proceedings. After Goku and Vegeta defeat Team Universe 9, Zeno and Future Zeno follow through on their promise and erase all of Universe 9, leaving only Mohito spared. When the fighters from the remaining universes halt their battles in shock at Universe 9's erasure, the Zenos are perplexed by the sudden pause in combat.

Following the defeat of Team Universe 10, Zeno and Future Zeno proceed to erase Universe 10 entirely, except for Kusu.

Later, when Frieza eliminates Frost, Zeno erases Frost for attempting to attack Frieza with a Chaos Beam from the sidelines, citing this action as against the rules. He warns Team Universe 6 that any further infractions will result in the erasure of Universe 6 as a whole.

After the defeats of Team Universe 2 and Team Universe 6, the Zenos promptly erase Universes 2 and 6, leaving only Sour and Vados spared, respectively. Subsequently, after Team Universe 4 and Team Universe 3 are defeated, Universes 4 and 3 are erased, with Cognac and Camparri being exceptions.

In the anime, it is revealed by the Grand Minister that Zeno foresaw a virtuous being winning the Tournament of Power and making a selfless wish on the Super Dragon Balls. Conversely, if the wish had been selfish, Zeno would have erased all universes, believing the winning universe to be no better than those erased. The Zenos express joy and gratitude towards Goku for his role in the tournament, engaging him in a handshake and praising his performance. Before Goku and his friends depart, Zeno asks if they will see him again, to which Goku assures him they will, concluding with a shared fist pump. Notably, these events do not occur in the manga storyline.

Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga[edit | edit source]

In the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, as a penalty for the chaos caused by Beerus, Whis, and Shin during the Moro conflict, the Grand Minister imposes a punishment: Beerus, Whis, and Shin are tasked with entertaining and caring for the Zenos to give their attendants a much-needed break. The Zenos are seen riding on Beerus and Shin's backs, urging them to play faster and enjoying the playful interaction.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes[edit | edit source]

In the Universal Conflict Saga of Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Zeno's mere existence serves as the motivation for the Core Area Warriors, particularly Hearts, who seeks to destroy him due to his omnipotent ability to erase entire universes effortlessly. Zeno appears at the end of the saga, unaware of the preceding events, engaging in a game of hide and seek with Future Zeno, Beerus, and Champa.

In the New Space-Time War Saga, Dark King Fu attains full control over Dogidogi's powers, prompting Hearts to observe that Fu has ascended to a level of existence comparable to that of the Omni-King (Zeno).
