Dabura (ダーブラ Dābura) is the King of the Demon Realm. Existing for thousands of years, Dabura was a demon king placed under the wizard Babidi's control by a spell, becoming his right-hand man before the appearance of Majin Buu and thus doing his bidding

Appearance

Dabura's appearance is reminiscent of the classic depiction of Satan/Lucifer. He sports vivid red skin, a goatee, horns, pointed ears, and animalistic yellow eyes, evoking a devilish image. Despite these traditional demonic features, Dabura's attire deviates from the norm. He wears a light blue suit that fits snugly over his entire body except for his muscular chest. Complementing his outfit is a spiked white cape, a white circular belt, and matching white boots, which add to his distinctive and formidable look.

Personality

Dabura's personality is a complex blend of sadism and sophistication. In battle, he exhibits a cruel streak, using ruthless tactics to dispose of his enemies. However, off the battlefield, he is surprisingly articulate and courteous, often speaking in a refined manner and even acknowledging the skills of his opponents with his deep, resonant voice.

Under Babidi's mind control, Dabura remains fiercely loyal to his master, though he does not hesitate to question Babidi's decisions if they seem counterproductive. This independence of thought is evident when Dabura warns Babidi about the uncontrollable power of Majin Buu, suggesting that Buu should be resealed to prevent a possible rebellion. Dabura’s insight proves accurate, showing his strategic acumen despite his subservience.

In a twist of character development, Dabura’s personality undergoes a dramatic change in the anime filler episodes. After his death, he finds himself in Heaven, where witnessing Videl's genuine concern for Gohan sparks a longing within him for love and friendship. This shift leads him to desire a more peaceful existence. This transformation is further explored in "Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot," where Dabura, upon being revived by Goku, adopts a pacifist stance and is hesitant to engage in combat.

In the expanded "Dragon Ball" universe, particularly in "Dragon Ball Heroes" and "Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2," Dabura's character is deepened through his relationship with his younger sister, Towa. He displays a protective and caring attitude towards her, embodying a brotherly affection. In the "Xenoverse 2" DLC, Dabura's actions are driven by a desire to avenge Towa, a reversal of the roles seen in the main storylines of the "Xenoverse" games. Biography

Background

In Age 474, Dabura falls under the control of the dark wizard Babidi. Tasked with investigating Earth due to its connection to Majin Buu’s sealed egg, Dabura dispatches a subordinate to scout the planet. The scout reports back that Earth lacks any warriors of significant power levels. Dabura’s role in Babidi’s organization includes recruiting powerful individuals to aid in their schemes.

Dragon Ball Z

World Tournament Saga

Dabura makes his first appearance when Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Krillin, led by Kibito and the Supreme Kai (Shin), infiltrate Babidi's spaceship to prevent Majin Buu's awakening. Upon realizing that the Dragon Team is hiding nearby, Babidi instructs Dabura to eliminate all but the three strongest members and to draw the survivors into the ship. Babidi has a personal vendetta against the Supreme Kai and orders Dabura to spare him for his own revenge. Dabura agrees and prepares for combat.

Dabura swiftly attacks the group, killing Kibito with a single energy blast. In the anime, Goku and Vegeta attempt to counterattack but are easily repelled as they haven't transformed into Super Saiyans. Dabura then petrifies Piccolo and Krillin with his spit, which turns them into stone, and retreats into Babidi’s ship, daring the others to follow.

Inside the ship, Dabura and Babidi monitor the Z Fighters as they enter. Babidi injects energy into the Sealed Ball containing Majin Buu and is surprised to find that they have already gathered nearly half the energy needed for Buu’s revival. Despite reconsidering their decision to kill Yamu and Spopovich so quickly, Dabura assures Babidi that the energy from the fighters they’ve lured into the ship will suffice to awaken Buu by the end of the day.

When the Z Fighters arrive at the first level, Vegeta defeats Pui Pui with ease, much to Dabura and Babidi’s shock. Babidi then transports them to Pui Pui’s home planet, Zoon, hoping the increased gravity will give Pui Pui an advantage, but Vegeta remains unaffected and quickly kills Pui Pui. Babidi, unnerved by the strength of the Earth warriors, is reassured by Dabura that they still have more levels to go and that Dabura himself is a formidable opponent.

On the second level, Babidi sends Yakon to fight Goku. Although Yakon initially seems to have the upper hand, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan, lighting up the dark environment. Yakon tries to absorb Goku’s energy but overconsumes it and explodes. Dabura dismisses Yakon’s failure as foolishness and prepares to handle the third level himself.

Dabura decides to fight personally on the third level, despite some reluctance from Babidi, who is worried about the possibility of Dabura losing. Dabura reassures Babidi, emphasizing his position as the king of the Demon Realm and his unmatched power.

In the anime, Dabura meditates to prepare for the battle. In the manga, he skips this step and confronts the Z Fighters directly. Goku questions Gohan’s readiness, and Vegeta criticizes Gohan for growing weaker during times of peace. However, they acknowledge that Gohan's anger could unlock his full power.

When Dabura enters the battlefield, he praises the Z Fighters for their progress but doubts they can defeat him. Vegeta mocks Babidi’s desperation for sending Dabura out so early. Gohan steps up to face Dabura, and they are transported to a mountainous terrain for their battle.

Initially, Dabura and Gohan seem evenly matched, but Goku notices Dabura’s cunning use of magic and special attacks. Frustrated by his inability to defeat Gohan, Dabura summons his Darkness Sword but is thwarted when Gohan breaks the blade. During their fight, Dabura observes Vegeta’s obsession with fighting Goku, which gives him an idea. He retreats to inform Babidi of the darkness in Vegeta's heart, prompting Babidi to take control of Vegeta’s mind. Vegeta willingly succumbs to gain the power he desires to defeat Goku.

With Vegeta now under Babidi’s influence, Dabura and Babidi prepare to face Gohan and the Supreme Kai. However, they are interrupted as the energy from Vegeta and Goku’s battle has already been sufficient to release Majin Buu from his seal. Gohan and Shin attempt to stop Buu’s resurrection, but Dabura protects Babidi, ensuring his master’s safety as Buu begins to awaken.

Majin Buu Saga

Initially believed to be dead, Majin Buu finally emerges from his sealed ball after a tense wait. Dabura, upon witnessing Buu's appearance, is taken aback and expresses disdain, deeming Buu an incompetent and childish creature due to his goofy demeanor and seemingly non-threatening behavior. However, Majin Buu overhears Dabura’s dismissive comments and retaliates swiftly. In a sudden attack, Buu gouges Dabura's eyes and sends him crashing into a mountain with a powerful kick, much to Babidi's delight.

Despite the severe assault, Dabura recovers and retaliates by hurling a magical spear through Buu’s body. This action frustrates Babidi, who remains determined to utilize Buu despite Dabura's warnings. Dabura argues that Buu is uncontrollable and suggests resealing him, but Babidi dismisses this, revealing his true feelings towards Dabura. Babidi coldly states that Dabura was merely a pawn in his plan, to be discarded once no longer useful.

Following Babidi's orders, Majin Buu turns Dabura into a large cookie and devours him. This act reverses Dabura's petrification spell on Piccolo and Krillin, restoring them to their normal states.

In the aftermath, Dabura's fate is recounted in Other World. Goku learns from King Yemma that Dabura, due to his demonic nature, was sent to Heaven as a form of punishment, as he would have thrived in the torment of Hell. This ironic twist results in Dabura experiencing joy and repentance for his evil deeds while in Heaven. Although the 'M' mark of Babidi's control remains on his forehead when he first arrives, it eventually disappears, similar to Vegeta's case.

In the anime, Dabura is depicted as enjoying his time in Heaven, reflecting on his past actions with remorse. He joins Bulma, Chi-Chi, and Videl in their quest to find Gohan in Other World. Dabura's newfound sense of joy and love astonishes those around him.

Dabura is last seen in Heaven, adorned with a wreath of flowers and collecting blooms for a bouquet. When Chi-Chi, Bulma, and Videl are resurrected, Dabura expresses regret that he cannot join them but remains content with his situation. Despite his redemption, Dabura is not among those revived by the wish made to Shenron, likely because Vegeta, who specified that only the innocent should be revived, wanted to ensure that malevolent beings like Babidi and Dabura remained dead.

"Future" Trunks Saga

In "Dragon Ball Super," Dabura reappears as an illusion during Goku and Krillin’s quest to retrieve a special herb for Master Roshi. The illusion, along with those of other past villains, challenges the duo in a forest. Krillin, haunted by the memory of being turned to stone by Dabura years ago, finds this apparition particularly terrifying, ranking Dabura among his most dreaded foes alongside Tambourine, Frieza, and Super Buu.
