Immortality

From The Character Database

Immortality refers to the ability to avoid death from natural causes for various reasons, such as unlimited lifespan, regeneration from lethal wounds, or protection by a higher power. However, no form of immortality is flawless; even highly touted immortal characters may not be completely unkillable when compared to characters from different fictional universes.

For types 2, 3, 4, and 8, it's important to specify the level of ability using a system similar to Regeneration. For instance, indicate if a character can withstand injuries at a mid-level for type 2 or has demonstrated recovery capabilities for the other types.

Types of Immortality:

  1. Eternal Life: Characters cannot die from natural causes like aging or illness but can be killed by unnatural means. This includes those who do not age at all and those who age but cannot die of old age. However, it’s important to clarify that this is not merely Longevity, as characters with that ability will eventually die of old age.
  2. Resilient Immortality: Characters can survive injuries that would be fatal to normal beings without needing to heal. Effectiveness varies and can be overcome by severe injuries or complete bodily destruction.
  3. Immortality via Regeneration: Characters can regenerate from normally lethal wounds, with effectiveness depending on the level of regeneration.
  4. Immortality via Reincarnation or Resurrection: Characters reincarnate in another body or resurrect after death.
  5. Deathless Immortality: Characters exist outside the bounds of life and death and cannot be traditionally killed, often requiring abilities like Existence Erasure to be destroyed.
  6. Parasitic: Characters achieve immortality by transferring their consciousness to another body, whether through possession or switching to a backup.
  7. Undead: Characters are unable to die because they are already dead, often existing as spiritual entities post-death.
  8. Reliant Immortality: Characters rely on one or more entities, objects, or concepts for their immortality. The specifics of this reliance and how the ability functions must be detailed.
  9. Transcendental Immortality: Characters' true selves exist independently from the physical realm, making them difficult to kill.
