Appearance

Gregory is a tiny, dark green humanoid with insect-like features, including an upright posture, antennae, and large bug-like eyes. He also has a tail-like protrusion at the bottom of his torso. Following the destruction of King Kai’s planet by Cell’s self-destruction, Gregory has been depicted with a halo.

Personality

Gregory is highly respectful of King Kai and always speaks highly of him. However, he can be boastful and quick to insult those he deems inferior. Despite his loudmouth tendencies, he remains generally polite.

Biography

Dragon Ball Z

Saiyan Saga

During Goku’s training on King Kai’s planet, King Kai summons Gregory for an additional challenge after Goku successfully catches Bubbles. Goku’s next task is to hit Gregory with a heavy hammer while the sprite freely flies around, evading attacks and countering. After several attempts, Goku finally lands a hit, prompting King Kai to commence his serious training.

Frieza Saga

Gregory assists in training Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo, much like he did with Goku. While Piccolo has no trouble, the others initially struggle to catch Gregory before eventually succeeding. Later, when the Ginyu Force invades King Kai’s planet, Gregory and Bubbles are knocked out.

Cell Saga

Gregory is present on King Kai’s planet when Goku arrives with Cell, who is about to self-destruct. When Cell detonates, Gregory perishes along with Goku, King Kai, and Bubbles. The group later finds themselves on Snake Way, where they realize Cell is missing. They soon learn that Cell regenerated and returned to Earth, only to be defeated by Gohan in his Super Saiyan 2 form with Goku’s encouragement. Following these events, Gregory, King Kai, Bubbles, and Goku relocate to Grand Kai’s Planet.

The Return of Son Goku and Friends!

Two years after Kid Buu’s defeat, Gregory, King Kai, and Bubbles attend a banquet at Mr. Satan’s newly built hotel. The celebration is interrupted by Abo and Kado, who seek Vegeta’s brother, Tarble. Goten and Trunks battle the duo but struggle to defeat them. The brothers merge into Aka and unleash an attack that destroys the hotel, but they are ultimately defeated by Goku’s Kamehameha. Afterward, Gregory and the others continue their feast.

Dragon Ball Super

God of Destruction Beerus Saga

Gregory appears alongside King Kai and Bubbles when they crash into King Kai’s house in a car as Goku arrives. Later, when Elder Kai and Supreme Kai contact King Kai about Beerus, Gregory and Bubbles help distract Goku by pointing to their halos while King Kai complains about never being revived, blaming Goku for bringing Cell to their planet. When Beerus arrives, Gregory hides with Goku in the wreckage of King Kai’s house.

Golden Frieza Saga

Gregory remains on King Kai’s planet and witnesses Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue transformation during Frieza’s attack.

Copy-Vegeta Saga

Gregory makes another appearance when Goku visits King Kai to discuss his difficulty controlling his Ki. While Goku trains, Gregory takes cover.

"Future" Trunks Saga

After Future Trunks and Future Mai arrive in the Alternate Timeline created by Whis warning Future Beerus of Future Shin’s death, Goku decides it's finally time to revive King Kai, Gregory, and Bubbles. However, Bulma and the others also wish to use the Dragon Balls. In an effort to fulfill his promise, Goku helps Bulma obtain materials for her new Time Machine. Before Goku can make his wish, Beerus destroys the Time Machine and Bulma’s lab as punishment. By the time Goku attempts to summon Shenron, the dragon departs due to staying too long. King Kai yells at Goku in frustration, leaving Gregory, Bubbles, and himself still deceased.

Trivia

  • Although Gregory did not appear in the original Dragon Ball manga by Akira Toriyama, he was one of many filler characters designed by Toriyama himself. The anime staff requested an additional character for the scenes on King Kai's planet, leading to Gregory's creation.
  • Despite being an anime-original character, Gregory appeared in the manga adaptation of The Return of Son Goku and Friends!, specifically in Chapter 2.
  • Gregory was not revived alongside Cell's other victims, likely because Shenron was instructed to "...revive all those on Earth killed by Cell." Since Gregory lived and died in Other World, he was exempt from the wish. However, in Dragon Ball Z Kai, he was revived along with Cell’s other victims, differing from the original anime.
  • Gregory’s name is likely a reference to Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, who transforms into an insect-like creature resembling a cricket or roach.
  • In Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Freeza, Gregory (along with Bubbles) is mentioned by King Kai when Piccolo arrives on his planet for training.
  • In Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans, Gregory and Bubbles assist Goku in battle while he is in the Yemma Forest. The game also explores Gregory’s origin, stating that he comes from a homeworld where his species is known as Sprites—one of the few official references to his race.
  • In Dragon Ball: The Breakers, there is a backpack accessory called King Kai’s House Backpack with Gregory, a bag modeled after King Kai’s house, where Gregory sits inside. This item is available for purchase in the Base’s Shop.
