Appearance[edit | edit source]

Fused Zamasu (合がっ体たいザマス, Gattai Zamasu), also called Merged Zamasu in the anime and God Zamas in the Viz manga, is typically known simply as Zamasu (ザマス, Zamasu). This character is a result of the Potara fusion between Goku Black (the present Zamasu occupying the body of the present Goku) and Future Zamasu. He serves as the ultimate antagonist in the "Future" Trunks Saga of Dragon Ball Super.

The fusion predominantly resembles Future Zamasu but incorporates several features from Goku Black, including his height and build. He retains Future Zamasu's green skin, gray irises, and white hair, though his facial structure leans more towards Goku Black's jawline. His eyes have the shape of Future Zamasu's, adorned with dark lines under the lower eyelids, and slightly smaller ears. The hairstyle mirrors Goku Black's Super Saiyan Rosé form, with the addition of a prominent bang extending over the right side of his face, reminiscent of Zamasu's mohawk.

Fused Zamasu is adorned with the original Gowasu's green Potara earrings on both ears and wears Supreme Kai's attire, nearly identical to Future Zamasu's outfit, but in Goku Black's color scheme, complete with his undershirt and red sash. In the anime, he also sports a Time Ring on his right index finger.

Due to the fusion's unbalanced nature, his semi-immortal body struggles to heal from injuries, resulting in parts of his body mutating into a purple, slimy substance, notably affecting the entire right half of his body. This mutation also alters the sclera of his right eye to yellow and the pupil to a purplish-red hue. When he uses the Light of Divine Justice, his right arm enlarges significantly.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Fused Zamasu, embodying the arrogance and self-righteousness of both Goku Black and Future Zamasu, perceives himself as the personification of justice. Upon his fusion, he boldly proclaimed himself the supreme deity, constantly emphasizing his divine splendor and unquestionable dominion. His overwhelming ego is evident in his disdainful approach to combat, often refusing to defend himself against Goku and Vegeta until Goku’s attack blasts off half his face. He prefers to hover above the battlefield, symbolically and literally looking down on his adversaries, and frequently uses terms like "holy," "judgment," and "absolution" to name his techniques.

Despite his composed exterior, Fused Zamasu is deeply unstable, perhaps more so than his individual components. Gowasu attributes this instability to Zamasu's obsession with the contradiction between gods and mortals. He flies into a blind rage when Trunks and Vegeta briefly overpower him in a beam struggle, despite not being physically harmed by the deflected attack. His fury intensifies when Goku lands a successful blow using the God Kamehameha and Kaio-ken. After his right side is damaged and mutated by the Light of Justice, Zamasu becomes increasingly deranged and prone to violent outbursts. This instability is due to his body deteriorating and the internal conflict between the immortal Future Zamasu and mortal Goku Black. By the time he faces Vegito and Future Trunks, Fused Zamasu descends into madness, ranting furiously and embodying the very destructiveness he despises in mortals. In the manga, while he retains his arrogance and revels in his power, he does express anger towards Gowasu for not explaining that only Supreme Kais can achieve a permanent fusion. He also chastises Goku and Vegeta for using the Potara earrings, the sacred treasures of the gods.

Interestingly, Fused Zamasu is acutely aware of his own hypocrisy in merging with Goku Black, a mortal. He views this as a necessary compromise to achieve his vision of a new world. By incorporating Goku's body into his being, he aims to perpetually remember the "sins" of mortals and the "failures" of gods. He justifies his actions as being for the greater good of the universe, even shedding tears he believes purify the world. When invoking the Light of Divine Justice, he declares that a god who cannot eradicate evil is worthless, suggesting that his sense of worth is tied to his power and ability to eliminate what he deems as evil. In the manga, once his insanity overtakes him, Zamasu abandons any pretense of justice and declares his intent to annihilate all life across all realities, save for versions of himself, deeming all other gods unnecessary.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Dragon Ball Super: "Future" Trunks Saga[edit | edit source]

In the anime, Future Trunks employs the Evil Containment Wave on Future Zamasu, thanks to a distraction by Bulma, to trap him in a vase, which Future Mai seals with a lid. However, because Goku forgot to bring the talisman created by Master Roshi, Zamasu is able to escape. Although he manages to break free, the effort leaves him weakened and shocked that his enemies had found a way to neutralize him despite his immortality. When Goku Black arrives, having sensed a decrease in Zamasu's ki, Zamasu tells his counterpart that they can no longer afford to underestimate the mortals.

Determined to demonstrate the true power of gods, Zamasu and Black float side by side in the sky. Zamasu removes his Potara earring from his left ear and attaches it to his right, initiating a powerful Potara Fusion that births Fused Zamasu. He immediately declares his new form as the embodiment of justice and demands reverence as "The Supreme God."

As he manifests a halo of light, Fused Zamasu extolls his body's abilities and launches a lightning attack at Goku and Vegeta. Vowing to showcase his divine might, he unleashes explosive blades at the Saiyan duo. After they recover, Zamasu asserts that the Project Zero Mortals will be completed and continues his lightning assault, enduring Vegeta's counterattack. To emphasize his power, Zamasu releases a bird-like ki figure that repels the Saiyans and damages them to the point of reverting to their base forms. Looking down on the defeated pair, Zamasu turns his attention to Earth, unleashing his energy to cleanse the planet. However, Goku and Vegeta recover, destroy the bird-like ki technique, and attack Zamasu directly, who blocks their attack and retaliates with more exploding blades.

When Future Trunks intervenes, a brief skirmish ensues, ending with Trunks being knocked to the ground. Zamasu mocks the mortal and attacks with Holy Wrath, which clashes with Trunks' Galick Gun. As Zamasu's attack overpowers Trunks, Vegeta joins his son, and together they launch a combined Galick Gun, pushing Zamasu's attack back but causing minimal damage. Frustrated by their resistance, Zamasu targets Trunks, only to hit Vegeta when he steps in. Goku then confronts Zamasu with a God Kamehameha, clashing with Zamasu's Holy Wrath.

Goku's attack overpowers Zamasu, resulting in an explosion that leaves the right half of Zamasu's face and body badly damaged, oozing a purple substance. Goku follows up with a close-range assault, but Zamasu grabs his leg. Goku enhances his physical attack with Super Saiyan Blue and Kaio-Ken, kicking Zamasu to the ground and destroying the halo. Exhausted, Goku collapses. In a rage, Zamasu calls upon the Light of Divine Justice, augmenting his mutilated arm into a monstrous form.

As Vegeta and Goku fuse into Vegito, Zamasu questions why mortals would imitate the gods, deeming it sinful. Vegito, tired of his monologue, punches him in the face and ascends to Vegito Blue. The two engage in battle, with Vegito initially having the upper hand, mocking Zamasu’s divine power. Angered, Zamasu knocks Vegito to the ground and attempts a finishing blow with his ki blade, but Vegito counters with his own. Vegito points out that Zamasu, fused with Goku's mortal body, is technically also mortal. Zamasu claims this was his intention; by fusing with Goku, who surpassed the gods despite being mortal, he embodies the gods' failures and atones for both mortal sins and divine mistakes.

Zamasu sheds tears, which he believes will purify the world, before powering up and growing larger, his right side becoming more grotesque. The fight resumes, with Vegito taunting Zamasu for failing to keep up with his speed and launching a Final Kamehameha. However, Zamasu emerges unscathed. As Vegito uses up his power, the fusion time limit expires, and he splits back into Goku and Vegeta. Zamasu quickly overpowers them. Before he can deliver a killing blow, Trunks intervenes and blocks his attack.

By now, Zamasu's mind is fully consumed by hatred and insanity. He fights Trunks, mocking his mortal weakness. Trunks, unashamed of his humanity, holds out against Zamasu, unconsciously gathering ki from Earth's inhabitants. Noticing this, Goku and Vegeta contribute their ki as well. With everyone's power channeled into his sword, Trunks charges at Zamasu, who is unable to defend against the enhanced attack and is stabbed. As Zamasu questions Trunks' defiance against his "divine justice," Trunks declares it meaningless and slices Fused Zamasu in half.

After Fused Zamasu is split in half and seemingly destroyed by Trunks, his will survives due to Future Zamasu's immortality. Moments later, a dark energy column erupts from the spot where he vanished, ascending into the sky and splitting into multiple beams before transforming into a vast, cloud-like form. This ominous cloud spreads across the Earth's surface, eventually enveloping it and taking on a sinister appearance, with Zamasu's face imprinted all over and emitting a maniacal laugh. Gowasu explains that Fused Zamasu has discarded his physical form, attempting to merge his essence with the very fabric of the universe to impose his warped version of justice and order.

Despite Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks combining their powers to launch a Kamehameha, Galick Gun, and Final Flash, they are unable to harm Infinite Zamasu. Continuing the mission initiated by his previous forms, Infinite Zamasu unleashes destructive energy waves upon Earth, annihilating most survivors and leaving the planet desolate. His influence rapidly spreads across Universe 7 in Future Trunks' timeline and even begins to manifest in the present timeline.

As Trunks and Mai grieve over the loss of their friends, it seems that Zamasu is invincible. However, Goku remembers the device given to him by Zeno and presses the button, summoning Future Zeno. Future Zeno finds Zamasu's presence annoying and declares that the entire world must be erased. Charging his energy, Future Zeno releases a blinding light that obliterates Zamasu along with the entire future timeline. This act ends Zamasu's reign of terror and prevents his plans from reaching their ultimate goal, stopping his attempt to invade the present timeline. Afterward, Whis travels to an alternate timeline to warn Beerus about Zamasu's intentions, preventing the plan from ever being re-created and allowing Future Trunks and Future Mai to live in that timeline after their own world is destroyed.

Universe Survival Saga[edit | edit source]

In the Universe Survival Saga, Infinite Zamasu appears in a flashback when Goku recalls the erasure of Universe 9, having witnessed Future Zeno's technique during the fight against Zamasu.

Manga[edit | edit source]

After Vegeta defeats Black and Goku overwhelms Future Zamasu, Black reminds his counterpart of their trump card. They use the Potara Earrings to fuse into Fused Zamasu. Immediately after the fusion, Fused Zamasu launches a swift attack on Super Saiyan God Vegeta and Goku, incapacitating them both. When they confront him in their Super Saiyan Blue forms individually, they find themselves unable to match his power. During Goku's fight with him, Goku manages to blast a hole through Fused Zamasu, but thanks to his immortality, Fused Zamasu regenerates quickly, rejoicing that his immortal nature remains intact even after the fusion.

Realizing their only hope is to fuse, Goku and Vegeta use the Potara earrings to become Vegito. Transformed into Super Saiyan Blue, Vegito asserts that Fused Zamasu is not a true god but a mortal like himself, pointing out that since Fused Zamasu never officially became a Supreme Kai, their fusion will only last an hour. Fused Zamasu angrily curses Gowasu for never informing him about the time limit of the fusion.

The battle begins, and Vegito quickly gains the upper hand, even slicing off Fused Zamasu's hands so swiftly that Zamasu doesn't notice initially. In retaliation, Fused Zamasu creates numerous Katchin cubes and hurls them at Vegito. As Vegito prepares his Final Kamehameha to finish off Fused Zamasu, the fusion unexpectedly ends, and Goku and Vegeta are hit by the Katchin cubes, sending them crashing to the ground.

Taking advantage, Fused Zamasu knocks Vegeta away and then torments Goku through numerous portals. Vegeta intervenes to save Goku, but Zamasu turns his fury on Vegeta, beating him savagely. Before Zamasu can kill Vegeta, Goku reveals his Perfected Super Saiyan Blue form and engages Zamasu on equal footing. They clash fiercely, with Zamasu unleashing a barrage of punches through portals and Goku countering when he finds openings. Zamasu then uses his Holy Wrath, but Goku manages to deflect it after a struggle and hurls Zamasu into a building. Emerging from the debris, Zamasu taunts Goku, claiming his overconfidence is his downfall and vows to defeat him. With only 20 minutes left before his fusion expires, Zamasu escalates his attacks, threatening to destroy the galaxy by amplifying his power.

When Goku attempts to erase Zamasu with Hakai, Zamasu opens a portal and uses Future Mai as a shield, forcing Goku to halt his attack. As the fusion time nears its end, instead of defusing, Fused Zamasu's immortality causes him to transform into a grotesque half-Goku Black, half-Future Zamasu state. Seizing the moment, Future Trunks steps in and slices him in half.

after Future Trunks slices the half-defused Fused Zamasu in half, Goku Black and Future Zamasu seem to separate. However, as Future Trunks stabs Goku Black, Black stands back up, blasts Trunks, and pulls the sword from his body, shattering it. Both Goku Black and Future Zamasu then individually transform back into Fused Zamasu. They begin to assault Goku, attempting to kill him, but Vegeta, enraged and powered up as Super Saiyan Blue, intervenes. He rescues Goku and unleashes a Gamma Burst Flash on the two Fused Zamases, blowing them apart. Each piece of their fragmented forms regenerates into more Fused Zamases, creating an army.

As this horde of Fused Zamases advances on the Dragon Team, Goku and Vegeta urge Trunks, Mai, Gowasu, and Shin to flee. Zamasu reveals that he now possesses a Time Machine from the Supreme Kai of Universe 12, allowing him to pursue them to any point in time. Searching for a Senzu Bean, Goku instead finds the button to summon Future Zeno. When Future Zeno arrives, the army of Fused Zamases is paralyzed with fear. Goku explains the situation, and Future Zeno deems them annoying, deciding to destroy them along with the entire universe. The Dragon Team escapes in the Time Machine as the army of Fused Zamases attempts to flee, but they are swiftly erased along with the timeline. As he is being erased, Zamasu laments that his plan should not end this way.

As in the anime, Whis travels to an alternate timeline to warn that timeline's Beerus about Zamasu's intentions, preventing any harm to gods and mortals from Zamasu in that timeline.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  1. First Potara-Fused Villain: Fused Zamasu is notable for being the first antagonist in the Dragon Ball series created through Potara Fusion. This fusion uniquely combines counterparts from alternate timelines: Goku Black from one timeline and Future Zamasu from another.
  2. Immortal Fusion: In the manga, Fused Zamasu is the first fusion to achieve full immortality, with Goku Black and Future Zamasu merging at a cellular level. In contrast, the anime portrays Fused Zamasu as a semi-immortal fusion, with Goku Black's half being mortal and Future Zamasu's half immortal.
  3. Dual Voice: Unlike Old Kai and Kibito Kai, whose voices blend into a single one post-fusion, Fused Zamasu retains two overlapping voices until he is hit by the Final Kamehameha. This dual voice likely reflects the fact that both components are essentially versions of Zamasu, though one resides in Goku's body. In the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, an echo effect is added to emphasize this duality.
  4. Comparison with Super 17: Fused Zamasu shares similarities with Super 17, as both are fusions of two counterparts of the same individual. However, Super 17's fusion involves an artificial copy (Hell Fighter 17) of Android 17.
  5. White Hair in Super Saiyan Rosé: Fused Zamasu and Infinite Zamasu exhibit white hair in their Super Saiyan Rosé forms, contrasting with the light pink hair of Goku Black in the same form. The exact reason for this difference is not specified, but it's presumed that Fused Zamasu inherits his white hair from Future Zamasu. In the anime, Fused Zamasu's form lacks the characteristic aura until he reaches his Half-Corrupted state.
  6. Xenoverse 2 Playability: Before the fourth DLC was added to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Half-Corrupted Fused Zamasu was intended to be a playable character alongside Super Saiyan Rage Future Trunks. While not fully implemented, he can be accessed in training mode if players complete Fu's crystal raid missions .
  7. Similarity with Baby: Fused Zamasu bears resemblance to Baby in several ways:
    • Both antagonists commandeer the body of a main protagonist (with Baby possessing Vegeta).
    • Both become part of groups they despise to achieve their goals (Fused Zamasu despises mortals, and Baby despises Saiyans).
    • Both have white hair when transformed into their Super Saiyan forms.
  8. Lack of Purity: Among Zamasu's forms, only Fused Zamasu and Infinite Zamasu lack purity of heart. This impurity drives their fanatical quests for their twisted visions of justice and order.
