Piano
Piano (ピアノ Piano) is the first son created by King Piccolo after his release from the Electric Rice Cooker. He is a highly intelligent, pterodactyl-like Namekian and the longest-living member of King Piccolo's mutated Namekian sons, surviving long enough to witness his father seemingly defeat the young warrior Goku and the beginning of the final showdown between King Piccolo and Goku.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Piano is a short, diminutive, mutant Namekian whose head resembles that of a pterodactyl. He has light green skin and wears a brownish-red robe with a blue cape tied around it. Piano also sports a golden necklace with a red jewel. His robe has lavender-colored sleeves with purple cuffs.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Piano is extremely loyal to his father and family, never doubting his father's abilities. He consistently believes King Piccolo to be far superior to any opponent, as shown when Emperor Pilaf, Shu, and Mai express doubt about King Piccolo's strength, while Piano maintains that his father is far stronger than they realize. Piano is also characterized by his intelligence, often providing counsel and support to his father.

Piccolo Saga[edit | edit source]
Unlike King Piccolo's other sons, Piano is not a fighter-class Namekian. His role is more akin to that of a young Dende serving Guru on Namek; he acts as King Piccolo's attendant and advisor rather than a combatant. Throughout his appearances, Piano assists his father with planning and strategizing, while leaving the fighting to his brothers, Tambourine and Cymbal, until their deaths.
During the final battle between King Piccolo and Goku, Piano witnesses the death of his brother, Drum, at Goku's hands. He is caught in the crossfire when Goku delivers a powerful punch to King Piccolo, sending him flying into Piano and injuring him. As the fight between King Piccolo and Goku continues, Piano is seen sinking into rubble, which apparently crushes and kills him as he falls underground.
Dragon Ball Super[edit | edit source]
"Future" Trunks Saga[edit | edit source]
In the anime, Piano makes a cameo appearance during the "Future" Trunks Saga. In a flashback, the Pilaf Gang recalls Master Roshi's attempt to seal King Piccolo using the Evil Containment Wave. During this scene, Piano is briefly shown silently observing the battle from Pilaf's airship, alongside the Pilaf Gang, while Piccolo explains the technique to Goku and Vegeta as a possible method to deal with the immortal Future Zamasu.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Piano's name is a reference to the musical instrument, the piano.
- In the Funimation dub, Piano humorously notes the naming pattern of Piccolo's sons when Cymbal is born. When King Piccolo names Cymbal, Piano sarcastically comments: "A musical instrument. Didn't see that one coming, Piccolo."
- In the Latin American Spanish dub, Piano's name was changed to "Buitrón." This change also implied that Piano was merely a loyal henchman rather than one of King Piccolo's sons.
- In the episode "Siege on Chow Castle," Piano is seen eating corn, despite being a Namekian (who only require water for nourishment). In another episode, "Awaken Darkness," Piano is shown forcing cooks and maids to prepare a banquet for King Piccolo to celebrate his conquest of Earth, even though King Piccolo, as a Namekian, does not need food. This may be due to King Piccolo being part of the Nameless Namekian, who never realized he was an alien. This fact is only revealed to Piccolo Jr. in Dragon Ball Z by Vegeta. It's possible that, believing himself to be human, the Nameless Namekian (and thus Kami and King Piccolo) was unaware that he only needed water for sustenance.
- In the Funimation dub, it is implied that Piano was simply stunned or hurt when he was crushed, whereas in the original Japanese version, Piano makes no sound after being crushed by King Piccolo. In the edited English dub, Piano similarly makes no noise after being crushed.
- In Master Roshi's past, one of the mutated Namekian offspring he faces has pterodactyl-like features similar to Piano, but more closely resembles Tambourine.
- Piano briefly appears in the second opening of Dragon Ball, which is currently available only in the Japanese version.
- Piano does not appear in Dragon Ball: Daimaō Fukkatsu, the first console game based on the King Piccolo Saga; instead, a pink alien-like spawn named Organ serves as King Piccolo's aide.
- Piano's design bears a resemblance to Baramos from the video game Dragon Quest III, which was also designed by Akira Toriyama.
- Piano and Drum are the only mutant Namekians in the manga who do not have wings, which is ironic considering Piano's pterodactyl-like head.
