You give corruption far too much credit; evil does not inform good. It sullies it, like how the Babari sullied their world with violence, and that arrogant Goku sullied this sacred ground by swinging his fists at a god. Mortals received the divine gift of intellect, the potential for wisdom, but they misuse it to destroy the beauty of creation. Mortals do not succumb to evil, they are the evil. They create it and spread it with minds they shouldn't possess. How can we call ourselves gods if we watch this plight and do nothing to stop it?

Zamasu (ザマス) is the Supreme Kai apprentice serving under Gowasu, the Supreme Kai of Universe 10. Before his apprenticeship, he held the position of North Kai of Universe 10.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Zamasu has a lean build and stands relatively tall. His distinctive features include pale green skin, gray irises, white eyebrows, and a mohawk of white hair. His typical attire includes a violet long-sleeved shirt beneath a gray and yellow coat, a light blue sash, dark blue baggy pants, and white boots. He also sports orange Potara-like earrings. Prior to his role as an apprentice Supreme Kai, he wore a traditional Kai outfit: a black Manchu-style robe with a front-draped sash bearing the Kai symbol, baggy pants, small shoes, and no earrings.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Zamasu is generally calm and analytical, particularly in combat, where he methodically assesses and counters his opponent’s moves. He values universal development and prosperity but harbors deep-seated doubts about the worthiness of mortals. He sees them as inherently flawed and prone to destructive cycles of conflict, which he believes undermines the universe's progress. His disapproval extends to the Kais' non-interference policy regarding mortals' actions, contrasting with the proactive role of the Gods of Destruction.

In the manga, Zamasu is more explicitly disdainful of mortals, scoffing at the idea that they could handle significant responsibilities or match the power of the gods, whom he views as the supreme life forms.

Despite his skepticism, Zamasu initially respects his mentor Gowasu’s teachings and exhibits humility and a sense of justice. This is symbolized by his skillful and balanced tea brewing, a sign of his inner equilibrium and just nature as noted by Gowasu.

However, after encountering Goku, Zamasu's outlook darkens. Goku’s carefree demeanor and disrespect toward divine beings infuriate Zamasu, deepening his distrust and contempt for mortals. This encounter, coupled with Goku's ability to achieve god-like power and challenge deities, drives Zamasu to radicalize his views. He becomes convinced that mortal existence is inherently evil and that the gods are ineffective protectors. In the anime, Zamasu's animosity intensifies after losing to Goku, reinforcing his belief in mortals' danger. In the manga, his resentment grows from observing Goku during the Tournament of Destroyers via GodTube.

Zamasu’s discovery of the Super Dragon Balls marks a turning point where he abandons his previous restraint. He becomes ruthless, even threatening Zuno's life to gain information. Zamasu's ambitions lead him to murder Gowasu to harness his master's powers for his own ends. When confronted about his future self's devastation in parallel worlds, Zamasu shows no remorse but rather a twisted satisfaction with the chaos his plans have sown.

While Zamasu's actions are undeniably malevolent, he perceives them as justifiable. His unwavering belief in his mission to purify the universe blinds him to the inherent evil of his deeds. He exhibits arrogance and condescension toward those he deems inferior and violates divine laws without hesitation. His narcissism is evident in his belief that only he deserves to inhabit his envisioned utopia.

Despite his malevolence, Zamasu has a fondness for nature. His future counterpart hides in a picturesque landscape during the assault on Earth, and Zamasu once kept a pet flying pig (reminiscent of Bubbles) during his tenure as North Kai.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Originally the North Kai of Universe 10, Zamasu witnessed countless human conflicts. Gowasu chose him as his successor due to his exceptional combat skills. Zamasu, eager to promote universal peace, accepted the role with enthusiasm.

Dragon Ball Super[edit | edit source]

"Future" Trunks Saga[edit | edit source]

In the anime, Zamasu first appears serving refreshments and offering tea to Gowasu. During their conversation, Zamasu questions the value of protecting mortals, given their repeated failures. Gowasu explains that Supreme Kais and Kais are creators who must observe and nurture, not interfere directly. Although reluctant, Zamasu accepts this directive.

Zamasu's worldview is further challenged when Goku, Beerus, and Whis arrive. Goku's persistent request to fight Zamasu, despite Beerus's intervention, leads Gowasu to instruct Zamasu to spar with Goku as part of his training. Goku's transformation into a Super Saiyan 2 surprises both Gowasu and Zamasu. During their battle, Goku's ki feels disturbingly similar to Black's, intensifying Zamasu's growing animosity towards mortals. Goku defeats Zamasu, but the encounter only deepens Zamasu's belief in the inherent danger of mortals, especially those capable of rivaling gods.

In the manga, Zamasu meets Shin and spars with Kibito, nearly ending the match too violently before Gowasu intervenes. Learning about Goku's defeat of Majin Buu and his god-like powers, Zamasu becomes intrigued and wary of mortal capabilities.

Zamasu and Gowasu observe the violent Babari creatures. Zamasu's suggestion to destroy them is rebuked by Gowasu, who emphasizes that such actions fall under the purview of the Gods of Destruction. Despite this, Zamasu's disdain for the Babarians grows as he watches their brutal behavior.

Gowasu demonstrates the Time Ring to Zamasu, explaining its limitations and granting him temporary Supreme Kai status to observe the Babarians' future. Witnessing their continued savagery, Zamasu concludes that mortals are incapable of peace.

Returning from their trip, Zamasu defies Gowasu by killing a Babari. He then dismisses Gowasu's assertion that mortals can offer lessons to gods. Instead, Zamasu argues that mortals use knowledge to corrupt their world and that those with knowledge are inherently evil.

Zamasu's growing resentment peaks when he learns about the Super Dragon Balls and sees Goku's godly ki during the Tournament of Destroyers. Consumed by anger, he seeks information about the Super Dragon Balls and Goku from Zuno, resorting to threats.

Later, in the anime, Zamasu remains outwardly calm when Goku, Beerus, Whis, and Shin visit Universe 10. Despite the visitors' suspicions, Zamasu's evil intentions become clear when he attempts to attack Goku. Beerus intervenes, erasing Zamasu from existence, and Gowasu mourns his fallen apprentice.

In the manga, Zamasu's actions in the future are confirmed, and he is observed to have become Goku Black, terrorizing Future Trunks' timeline.

Original Future[edit | edit source]

Main Article: Goku Black[edit | edit source]

In his original future, Zamasu kills Gowasu, steals his Potara Earrings and Time Ring, and uses the Super Dragon Balls to switch bodies with Goku. He kills Goku (now in Zamasu's body), Chi-Chi, and Goten, then allies with his future self in Future Trunks' timeline to execute the Project Zero Mortals plan. Together, they annihilate the Supreme Kais and the Gods of Destruction, and decimate Earth's civilization. Known as Goku Black, Zamasu battles Future Trunks multiple times, seeking complete control over Goku's body.

When Goku and Vegeta travel to the future with Future Trunks, Vegeta initially confronts Black. Despite Black's Super Saiyan form, Vegeta's Super Saiyan Blue overpowers him. Black's inability to achieve Super Saiyan Blue's power highlights his limitations. The timeline splits as Beerus destroys Zamasu in the present, preventing the same future events from occurring in the altered timeline. However, the Zamasu from the original future, sustained by the Time Ring, continues his reign of terror until he is ultimately erased by Future Zeno.

Universe Survival Saga[edit | edit source]

In the anime, Gowasu references Zamasu when considering potential members for Team Universe 10, vowing to avoid another choice like him. In the manga, Rumsshi chastises Gowasu for choosing Zamasu and expresses contempt for relying on Beerus to resolve the issue. Rumsshi even threatens Gowasu, fearing that Zamasu's actions might prompt another meeting at Zeno's Palace.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  1. Name Origin: The name "Zamasu" comes from the Japanese verb "zamasu" (ざます), meaning "to be." This naming aligns with the pattern used for his mentor, Gowasu. In the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Super, after Beerus destroys Zamasu, Gowasu reflects on this by saying "Not to be," referencing the verb's meaning.
  2. Promotion to Supreme Kai: Zamasu is notable for being the second character in the Dragon Ball series to ascend from the role of Kai to that of Supreme Kai, albeit his tenure was temporary. This transition highlights his significant, albeit misguided, potential and the responsibilities that come with such divine authority.
  3. Pet Companion: In a charming parallel to King Kai of Universe 7, who has a pet monkey named Bubbles, Zamasu is shown to have had a pet as well. His companion was a small, winged pig, reflecting a similar fondness for animal companionship during his time as North Kai of Universe 10. This connection underscores the common traits shared by Kais across different universes.
  4. Costume Color Scheme: Zamasu’s attire in the anime features a color palette that mirrors that of Shin, the Supreme Kai of Universe 7, in the manga. This visual similarity may symbolize their shared role
