Stopover on Arlia
During their journey to Earth, Vegeta and Nappa make a brief detour to the planet Arlia. This segment, exclusive to the anime, shows them effortlessly defeating the planet's strongest warriors and then obliterating Arlia itself before continuing on their path to Earth.
Arrival and Initial Battle

Vegeta's Transformation
Surviving the blast, Vegeta resorts to transforming into a Great Ape, using a Power Ball to simulate the moon's light since Piccolo had destroyed the actual moon earlier. In his Great Ape form, Vegeta gains the upper hand, forcing Goku to rely on the Spirit Bomb technique. However, Vegeta disrupts the attack before Goku can unleash it and begins to crush Goku slowly.
Krillin and Gohan return to the battlefield after seeing the Power Ball. They attempt to cut off Vegeta's tail to revert him to his normal form. Though they fail, Yajirobe succeeds in severing Vegeta's tail. Back to his normal state, Vegeta, though weakened, still outmatches Gohan. Goku instructs Krillin to use the remaining Spirit Bomb energy against Vegeta.
The Spirit Bomb and Gohan's Transformation
Krillin, guided by Goku and North Kai, launches the Spirit Bomb at Vegeta. Though Vegeta dodges the initial attack, Gohan deflects it back, severely wounding Vegeta. Despite this, Vegeta survives and prepares a counterattack. Noticing Gohan's regrown tail, Vegeta realizes the boy may transform into a Great Ape. Yajirobe's distraction allows Gohan to transform, and in his ape form, Gohan overpowers the exhausted Vegeta.
Vegeta cuts off Gohan's tail, reverting him to normal size, but the boy falls on him, crushing him. Defeated, Vegeta retreats to his space pod. As Krillin prepares to finish Vegeta, Goku telepathically urges him to spare the Saiyan prince, hoping for a rematch and believing Vegeta can change as Piccolo did. Krillin reluctantly agrees, and Vegeta departs, vowing revenge on Goku. As he leaves, Vegeta is consumed by disbelief and anger over how a "low-class" Saiyan like Goku could challenge him, refusing to acknowledge the combined efforts of the Z Fighters in his defeat.
Frieza Saga
After recovering, Cui informs Vegeta that Frieza is already on Namek with his lieutenants, Zarbon and Dodoria, searching for the Dragon Balls. Frieza had learned about them by monitoring Vegeta and Nappa’s scouters. Wasting no time, Vegeta heads to Namek with his own plan to use the Dragon Balls. On Namek, he encounters Krillin and Gohan, who are also seeking the Dragon Balls. Although he initially tries to intimidate them, Vegeta eventually focuses on the bigger threat: Frieza.
Vegeta soon faces Cui, who was sent by Frieza to kill him. Unknown to Cui, Vegeta's strength has significantly increased after his battles on Earth. Easily outmaneuvering Cui, Vegeta kills him. Vegeta later confronts Dodoria and, after learning that Frieza was responsible for destroying Planet Vegeta, kills him as well. Dodoria’s offer to ally against Frieza is dismissed by Vegeta, who resents Frieza for enslaving him.
In his quest for the Dragon Balls, Vegeta attacks a Namekian village to secure one of them. With Frieza's forces already holding five Dragon Balls, Vegeta plans to keep one and seize the rest from Frieza when the opportunity arises. After hiding his Dragon Ball, Vegeta is ambushed by Zarbon. Initially, Vegeta seems to have the upper hand until Zarbon transforms, overpowering and leaving him for dead. Zarbon reports back to Frieza, who orders him to retrieve Vegeta for interrogation, suspecting he knows the location of a Dragon Ball.
Once healed, Vegeta escapes and steals Frieza’s collected Dragon Balls. He confronts Krillin and Bulma for another Dragon Ball, but Zarbon soon arrives, leading to a battle where Vegeta, now even stronger, defeats and kills Zarbon. Vegeta gathers six of the seven Dragon Balls and seeks the final one, encountering Gohan, who tricks him and steals one of the Balls.
Frustrated by Gohan’s deception, Vegeta returns to Bulma’s hideout, only to find it abandoned. Meanwhile, Frieza summons the Ginyu Force to retrieve the Dragon Balls and capture Vegeta. Upon their arrival, Vegeta allies with Gohan and Krillin, planning to use the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality.
As they race to gather the Dragon Balls, the Ginyu Force intercepts them. Despite their efforts, the Ginyu Force captures the Dragon Balls, and Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin are left to face them. Vegeta quickly kills Guldo, who tries to skewer Gohan and Krillin. Recoome then steps up, easily defeating Vegeta, Krillin, and Gohan.
Goku arrives, healing his allies and effortlessly defeating Recoome, Burter, and Jeice. Vegeta kills the unconscious Recoome and Burter. Captain Ginyu and Jeice arrive, leading to a confrontation where Ginyu switches bodies with Goku. After a series of battles and another body switch, Ginyu ends up in a frog’s body due to Goku’s quick thinking.
Vegeta, Krillin, and Gohan take Goku to heal, while Frieza heads to retrieve his Dragon Balls. With Goku recovering, Krillin and Gohan summon the Namekian Dragon, Porunga, and wish for Piccolo's revival and transport to Namek. Before they can make a third wish, the Elder Guru’s death interrupts them, causing Vegeta's rage.
Frieza arrives, transforming to a more powerful state. Despite Vegeta’s warnings and attempts to fight, Frieza overpowers him and the others. Piccolo joins the battle, but even he struggles against Frieza's new form. Vegeta devises a plan to become a Super Saiyan by having Krillin injure him so Dende can heal him, but this fails as Frieza transforms again.
Frieza's third form proves too powerful, leading to Dende’s death and a desperate battle. Vegeta declares himself a Super Saiyan and attacks Frieza, but is easily defeated. Goku arrives, and Vegeta, realizing Goku’s strength, taunts Frieza, only to be mortally wounded by Frieza.
As Vegeta dies, he implores Goku to defeat Frieza and avenge the Saiyan race. Goku promises to honor Vegeta's pride and buries him before facing Frieza. In a vision, Vegeta and other Saiyans encourage Goku to defeat Frieza.
Vegeta is later revived by the Earth's Dragon Balls and transported to Earth. He learns Goku has achieved the Super Saiyan form and tries to attack Frieza but is sent to Earth by Porunga before he can strike. Frieza-Android Saga Interlude
In the anime only, Vegeta travels through space aboard the Capsule Corporation Spaceship in search of Goku, determined to unlock the Super Saiyan transformation. Along the way, he confronts and defeats the remaining remnants of Frieza's army to prove Frieza's demise. Sensing Goku's presence on a nearby planet, Vegeta's pursuit is momentarily obstructed by a massive asteroid. One year and eight months after the Namekian saga, Vegeta returns to Earth having failed to locate Goku. Despite his increased strength from intense training, he remains frustrated at not achieving Super Saiyan status. Upon returning to Capsule Corporation, Bulma insists he clean up and even gives him a pink shirt, which he reluctantly accepts. Despite his outward hostility, Vegeta finds himself surprisingly compliant with Bulma's demands, much to everyone's surprise. As they settle in, news arrives that Frieza and King Cold are en route to Earth, prompting tension. However, a mysterious young man named Trunks arrives, transforms into a Super Saiyan, and swiftly dispatches both Frieza and his father. Trunks reveals that Goku will soon arrive, leaving the Z Fighters and Bulma awaiting Goku's return with eager anticipation.

Upon fixing the time machine in the anime, Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks travel to the future. Five years later, while on a mission on another planet with Saiyan comrades including Raditz and Nappa, Vegeta receives news that Planet Vegeta has been destroyed by a meteor. Raditz remarks that they were fortunate to have ignored Frieza's orders to return, but Vegeta is devastated, realizing he will never inherit the title of King Vegeta. Nappa asks about Vegeta's brother, and Vegeta acknowledges having a brother, but fears he may have perished along with the others.

A wall collapses, revealing a terrified family inside their home. Vegeta tells Granolah that while the Saiyans may deserve punishment, he's merely repeating the cycle of history. Granolah, angered by Vegeta’s words, uses a Kiai to send Vegeta flying out of the city and approaches for a final, all-out attack.
In a moment of resignation, Vegeta apologizes to Beerus, admitting that he couldn't revert to the warrior he once was and that the power of a God of Destruction was beyond his grasp. Before Granolah can unleash his decisive blow, he is distracted by the sudden arrival of Monaito. This gives Goku the opportunity to knock Granolah down and dissipate his attack, saving Vegeta from imminent destruction.
After Monaito reveals Granolah's backstory and discloses that Bardock, Goku's father, is the reason Granolah is alive today, Vegeta informs Goku that Bardock was indeed his father. Soon after this revelation, Gas appears, having been transformed into the universe's strongest being by Elec, who summoned Toronbo. Gas swiftly defeats Granolah, forcing Goku to step in. He urges Vegeta to retrieve the Senzu Bean hidden in his armor. However, instead of using it himself, Vegeta gives the bean to Granolah, encouraging him to confront Gas with his own strength. Goku eventually escapes from Gas by teleporting to another world, then returns to Cereal. Seeking refuge in Monaito's home, Vegeta, Goku, and the others listen to a transmission from Bardock’s scouter, which recounts Bardock's past battle with Gas. After the recording, Vegeta reflects solemnly on how he has lost sight of the pride of his Saiyan heritage, focusing too much on atoning for his past rather than embracing the true essence of his people.
When Gas returns to Cereal, the Saiyans, reinvigorated by their resolve, decide to face him together. They transform into their Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego forms and launch an assault on Gas. Vegeta attacks with a sphere of Destruction energy, but Gas begins to push it back. Goku attempts to assist Vegeta, but realizing the struggle is futile, Vegeta leaves Goku to manage it while he directly engages Gas. Gas is baffled by Vegeta's increasing strength despite the significant damage he has sustained. Vegeta explains that his Ultra Ego form thrives on damage, making him stronger with every hit.

Gas falls to the ground, seemingly defeated but still alive. Granolah tells his siblings to take Gas away and never return to Planet Cereal, expressing regret for his actions and apologizing to Goku and Vegeta.
However, as Monaito heals Goku, Vegeta, and Granolah to full strength, Gas, refusing to give up, blasts a hole through Monaito's chest. Goku and Vegeta, seeing their friend gravely injured, transform and re-enter the battle against Gas. Despite their efforts, they are easily overpowered. As the fight continues, Gas's body begins to decay from the damage he has taken.
At this critical moment, Frieza arrives and swiftly kills both Gas and Elec. Turning his attention to Goku and Vegeta, he leaves them puzzled as they demand to know how he defeated Gas, the supposed strongest in the universe. Frieza hints that he may have been training in another dimension, a statement that confounds the Saiyans. To their shock, Frieza unveils a new transformation he calls "Black Frieza," showcasing his overwhelming power by easily defeating Goku and Vegeta even in their strongest forms. Satisfied with his victory, Frieza spares their lives and departs.
Whis then appears and, as a special favor to Goku, restores Monaito's life. He urges Goku and Vegeta to leave with him immediately because Beerus is struggling with making instant yakisoba. Before departing, Goku invites Granolah to join them for training, but Granolah declines, choosing instead to seek the Dragon Balls to repair the damage he caused to Planet Cereal. As a parting gesture, Vegeta gives Granolah the Dragon Radar before they leave with Whis.
High School Saga
After the intense battles on Planet Cereal and the shocking emergence of "Black Frieza," Vegeta and Goku, determined not to fall behind their powerful adversary, resume their rigorous training on Beerus' Planet.

Following a meal prepared by Lemo, Goku and Vegeta commence their match. Beerus observes a subtle but significant shift in Vegeta's movements during the fight. The battle endures for hours, and with both fighters nearly depleted of energy, they make a final bid to claim victory. Vegeta manages to tap Goku on the chest, knocking him down, and declares his long-sought victory over Goku before collapsing from exhaustion.

Ten years after Buu’s downfall, Goku, Vegeta, and their friends enter the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament. Vegeta also encourages his son, Trunks, to take part in the tournament, humorously threatening to cut Trunks’ allowance in half if he doesn't fight well. During the preliminary rounds, Vegeta effortlessly deals with an opponent who tries to provoke him, sending the trash-talker flying into a billboard with a casual backhand and suggesting to the referees that his opponent "forfeited" before their match even started.
At the tournament's conclusion, Goku announces his plan to leave and train Uub, the reincarnation of Buu. Before departing, Goku has a final conversation with Vegeta. Goku expresses a desire to have a friendly rematch one day, to which Vegeta responds that when they do fight, they’ll need an entire planet as their arena. After their brief exchange, Goku and Uub fly off to begin their training.
