Future Zamasu (未み来らいのザマス, Mirai no Zamasu) is the counterpart of Zamasu from an alternate timeline, specifically the timeline of Future Trunks. He serves as the secondary antagonist in the "Future Trunks Saga" of Dragon Ball Super. Originally, Future Zamasu was the apprentice Supreme Kai of Universe 10 who eventually ascended to the role of Supreme Kai in his timeline.

In this timeline, he forms an alliance with Goku Black, his past self from the main present timeline. Together, they are the last remaining gods in their universe. United by a common goal, Future Zamasu and Goku Black execute "Project Zero Mortals," a plan aimed at exterminating all mortal beings.

Appearance:[edit | edit source]

Future Zamasu closely resembles his alternate timeline counterpart. He is tall and lean with pale green skin and gray eyes. His distinctive tall white Mohawk curves forward, hanging over the right side of his face. He wears a slim, long-sleeved violet shirt, loose-fitting blue pants, white boots, and a dark grey Supreme Kai vest with yellow trim. A pale blue sash is wrapped around his waist. Unlike his other timeline version, Future Zamasu has dark lines around his eyes and sports a green Potara earring on his left ear, a gift from Goku Black, instead of the typical orange earrings worn by his counterpart.

Personality:[edit | edit source]

After joining forces with Goku Black, Future Zamasu fully embraces his malevolence, seeing all mortals and "unnecessary gods" as inferior. He shares Black's sadistic vision of eradicating mortals, whom he blames for all evil, and sees gods as complicit for their inaction. He envisions a "utopia" devoid of both. During his battles with Goku and Future Trunks, he frequently criticizes mortals for misusing their "god-given wisdom" for selfish purposes.

His deep-seated disdain for mortals renders him immune to their attempts at manipulation, as demonstrated in the manga when Bulma's Amorous Glance fails to sway him. Despite his arrogance, Future Zamasu does not underestimate his adversaries. When Future Trunks nearly traps him with the Evil Containment Wave, he acknowledges the genuine threat posed by his opponents. Although primarily focused on their mission, Future Zamasu shows a rare glimpse of compassion towards Goku Black. In the manga, he goes to great lengths to protect Black, even taking a blow that would normally be fatal, thanks to his own immortality.

This indicates that, like his present counterpart and Goku Black, Future Zamasu is driven by a distorted sense of justice. He sees Black as a kindred spirit, perhaps his only friend, as they both share the same goals. However, he also exhibits a sadistic streak, similar to Black, as seen when he cruelly taunts Goku about how Black murdered Goku's family after stealing his body.

Key Differences from Goku Black:[edit | edit source]

Lack of Obsession with Goku: Unlike Black, Future Zamasu never met Goku before their alliance and thus never developed an intense obsession or hatred for him. This difference led him to wish for immortality via the Super Dragon Balls, rather than swapping bodies with Goku. Nevertheless, he still believes that only he should have the privilege of killing Goku.

Reveling in Immortality: Future Zamasu takes pride in his immortality, viewing it as a fitting attribute for himself. This contrasts with Black, who dismisses immortality and seeks to grow stronger through combat.

Awareness of Future Zeno: In the manga, Future Zamasu is conscious of Future Zeno's existence and the potential consequences of Zeno discovering their plans. This awareness adds a layer of caution to his otherwise overconfident demeanor.

Relationship with Goku Black: Their partnership in the manga is more pragmatic compared to the anime's portrayal of mutual kinship. Future Zamasu looks down on Black for forsaking his divine form in pursuit of power, while Goku suggests that Black views Future Zamasu as merely a tool. This pragmatic relationship leads to tension and even a brief conflict between the two when they struggle against Goku and Vegeta.

Biography:[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Future Zamasu existed within the timeline of Future Trunks. He was originally a Supreme Kai apprentice, studying under Future Gowasu. When Goku Black first encounters him, he insinuates that Future Zamasu harbored similar ambitions of becoming a Supreme Kai and eliminating Future Gowasu, referencing the latter’s fate by saying, "You also wanted to do this, right?", just after killing Gowasu himself.

On a fateful day, while serving tea to Future Gowasu, Zamasu from an alternate timeline appeared and killed Gowasu. This Zamasu revealed that he was searching for a timeline and universe devoid of a God of Destruction, as Supreme Kais are restricted from directly interfering with planets. His quest led him to Future Zamasu’s universe where Universe 7's God of Destruction, Future Beerus, was deceased. Zamasu from the alternate timeline offered Future Zamasu a chance to enact the "justice" he believed the universe deserved, and Future Zamasu accepted. Together, they used the Super Dragon Balls to grant Future Zamasu immortality and then destroyed the Dragon Balls to prevent anyone from reversing their wishes.

With no opposition left, the two Zamasus began their plan to eradicate "sinful mortals" and "unnecessary gods," aiming to create a "utopia" across all of existence. They started by killing all the Supreme Kais, which indirectly led to the deaths of the Gods of Destruction. Future Zamasu watched as Zamasu from the alternate timeline decimated countless planets, systematically exterminating as many mortals as possible.

"Future" Trunks Saga[edit | edit source]

In the manga, while Goku Black was annihilating the mortal population in Future Trunks’ timeline, Future Zamasu used the Time Ring to explore the other parallel timelines. He discovered no significant obstacles to their plan. With Earth’s population nearly extinct, Future Trunks traveled back in time and returned with Goku and Vegeta.

During their first encounter in the anime, as Goku and Goku Black began fighting, Future Zamasu appeared beside Black. Reminding him of their agreement to allow Zamasu to kill Goku, he joined the battle. Future Trunks intervened to even the odds, but Zamasu’s immortality allowed him to heal instantly from any injury, including a stab wound from Trunks. Goku and Trunks were eventually overpowered by a combined attack from Zamasu and Black. Just as Zamasu and Black were about to finish them off, Vegeta intervened. Though he quickly fell unconscious again, his interference allowed Goku and Trunks to escape in their time machine.

Later, Zamasu and Black awaited the return of Goku and his allies at their cabin. They discussed their strategy and the importance of Goku Black growing stronger by adapting to Goku's fighting style. Future Zamasu suggested killing Goku slowly to maximize Black’s growth. He also offered Black the chance to become immortal, but Black declined, content with his current power.

When Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks returned to the future for the second time, Zamasu and Black confronted them immediately. Future Zamasu was shocked but intrigued when Goku revealed they knew their plan. He then listened as Goku Black corrected Goku’s understanding, explaining that Black was another version of Zamasu who had taken over Goku's body.

As the battle continued, Zamasu and Black recounted their history: how Goku Black killed Goku and his family, traveled to the future, killed Gowasu, and joined forces with Future Zamasu. Future Zamasu used the Super Dragon Balls to gain immortality, and the two destroyed them afterward. An enraged Goku attacked, but Future Zamasu’s immortality allowed him to endure.

The fight grew more intense when Future Trunks unlocked a new Super Saiyan form and fought Black evenly, surprising both Zamasu and Future Yajirobe. Seeing the struggle, Future Zamasu stepped in to help Black, but their combined efforts were repelled by Trunks’ newfound power. This allowed Goku and Vegeta to retreat, knowing they would return later.

In the manga, the timeline of events differs slightly. Future Zamasu first appeared to rescue Goku Black from Vegeta and healed him, giving Black a near-death power boost. Despite being considered a minor threat by Goku and Vegeta, Future Zamasu’s immortality and divine powers allowed him to keep fighting. He revealed his immortality after Goku suggested they surrender and undo their plans with the Dragon Balls, which he had destroyed.

As the battle raged on, Future Zamasu and Goku Black decided to merge their powers. They fused using the Potara earrings to become Fused Zamasu, combining Future Zamasu’s immortality with Goku Black’s strength. This fusion resulted in a mutated form due to the mix of immortal and mortal essences. Despite their combined might, they were eventually defeated after a series of intense battles, culminating in their erasure by Future Zeno.

In the aftermath, Whis intervened by traveling back to a point before Future Beerus' death in the timeline and warning him about Future Zamasu. This action created a new timeline, one free from Future Zamasu’s tyranny.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Achieving Immortality: Future Zamasu is the second character in the Dragon Ball series to achieve immortality through the Dragon Balls. The first was Garlic Jr., who made his wish in Dragon Ball Z.
  • Comparison with Shinobu Sensui: Future Zamasu shares striking similarities with Shinobu Sensui, a villain from YuYu Hakusho:
    • Perception of Humanity: Both characters see humanity as a blight on the world. They believe that their cause—destroying humanity—is noble and just.
    • Divine Energy: They both possess divine forms of energy. Future Zamasu wields godly ki, while Sensui commands Sacred Energy. They use this divine power to overpower their adversaries.
  • Similarity to Demigra: Future Zamasu is akin to Demigra, a character from Dragon Ball Xenoverse, in several ways:
    • Manipulating Time: Both characters have plans involving manipulation of time.
    • Deity Status and God Complex: Future Zamasu is a Core Person, and Demigra is a Demon God. Both possess a god complex, believing themselves superior to other deities.
    • Contempt for Mortals: Future Zamasu's disdain extends to deities who are lenient towards mortals. He believes that these deities must be eliminated in his pursuit of divine justice.
    • Intentions Behind Their Actions: Future Zamasu's actions, while evil, are driven by what he perceives as good intentions. He considers mortal existence a "sin" and believes his actions are necessary for divine justice. In contrast, Demigra's motives are rooted in a quest for power. His actions are self-serving, driven by his desire to become the Supreme Kai of Time. He was originally one of the caretakers of Tokitoki along with Chronoa, but after being caught experimenting on the divine bird, he was banished. Demigra sought to claim the position of Supreme Kai of Time through force and attempted to erase history to recreate the universe according to his vision. His malevolent intentions were clear as he aimed to destroy the Time Nest and rule over time itself.
  • Funimation Dub Note: In the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Super, Future Zamasu's immortality is often referred to as invulnerability. This highlights his ability to withstand any form of physical damage, reinforcing his role as an almost indestructible antagonist.
