The Nameless Namekian or Katas' son (カタッツの子 Katattsu no Ko, lit. "Son of Katatz"), later referred to as Piccolo (and occasionally mistaken for "Kamiccolo"), is a Namekian and the son of Katas. He was originally one being, but later divided the evil within himself, creating Kami and expelling King Piccolo from his soul. He first appears in a flashback in "Earth's Guardian Emerges," the 125th episode of Dragon Ball, which aired on August 31, 1988. Throughout the Dragon Ball anime and manga, he continues to appear in flashbacks, and formally reappears as Piccolo in Dragon Ball Z's 141st episode, "The Reunion," which premiered on May 27, 1992.

In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, a quiz suggests that the Nameless Namekian's name is also Katas (カタッツ Katattsu), the same as his father.

Personality[edit | edit source]

The personality of the Nameless Namekian before his split into Kami and King Piccolo is unknown. However, after their fusion, he dominantly retains Piccolo's personality. This is a result of a mutual pact between Kami and Piccolo, where they decided that Piccolo's stronger presence would prevail, similar to the dynamic between Shin and Kibito. The Nameless Namekian displayed increased intelligence, particularly in battle, often formulating strategies in real time. As Super Saiyans rendered his strength less relevant, his wisdom became one of his most valuable assets to the Z Fighters.

Despite keeping Piccolo's personality, aspects of Kami's personality and memories linger, thanks to Kami's presence in Piccolo's subconscious. He spent much of his time on The Lookout with Mr. Popo and Dende, Earth's new Guardian. The Nameless Namekian also developed a fondness for Earth, influenced by both Kami's guardianship and Piccolo's birth there. His attachment to Earth is humorously demonstrated when he is outraged by the damage to Kami's Lookout during the Majin Buu saga.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Pre-Dragon Ball[edit | edit source]

The Nameless Namekian was born on planet Namek in Age 242 to the Namekian Katas. During his childhood, a catastrophic natural disaster struck the planet, wiping out nearly the entire Namekian population. Only a few Namekians, including the Grand Elder Guru and Lord Slug (in non-canon media), survived. To ensure his son's survival, Katas launched him into space in a Namekian spaceship. This spacecraft required basic knowledge of the ancient Namekian language to operate, and it eventually landed on Earth in the harsh, remote region known as Yunzabit Heights. Here, the Nameless Namekian spent his formative years alone, with no memory of his origins.

In the Dragon Ball storyline, Kami recounts to Mr. Popo that he has no recollection of how he arrived at Yunzabit Heights, having suffered amnesia early in his life. It wasn’t until later, when the Saiyans Vegeta and Nappa revealed his extraterrestrial origins, that Kami (as the good half of the Nameless Namekian) learned the truth. Throughout his childhood, the Nameless Namekian often gazed at the sky, seeking answers about his past. He eventually discovered the Namekian spaceship hidden on a plateau and used it as a home while awaiting some form of contact or explanation for his existence. Despite exploring Earth, he frequently returned to Yunzabit Heights, hoping for answers, but none came.

As he wandered Earth, the Nameless Namekian's heart—initially pure—became tainted by the violence and hatred he witnessed. Later in life, he sought to become the Guardian of Earth, but the then-current guardian recognized the darkness within him. To qualify for the position, the Nameless Namekian was instructed to rid himself of his evil essence. This separation led to the creation of the malevolent entity known as King Piccolo.

In the film Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone and during the Garlic Jr. Saga of Dragon Ball Z, it is revealed that the Nameless Namekian competed against Garlic for the role of Earth’s Guardian. The Nameless Namekian won the position after purging his evil half, as Garlic’s motivations were rooted in selfish ambition.

This division of his being had two significant consequences. First, the Nameless Namekian's power level took a significant hit. During the Frieza Saga, the Namekians suggest that, had the Nameless Namekian remained whole, he could have easily defeated Frieza, whose power level ranged from 530,000 in his first form to 120,000,000 at full strength. However, after the split, Kami and King Piccolo’s power levels dropped to mere hundreds. Secondly, the two remained spiritually linked: if one died, so would the other.

King Piccolo ravaged Earth for several years until he was eventually sealed away by Master Mutaito. Hundreds of years later, Emperor Pilaf freed King Piccolo, only for him to be killed by a young Goku. However, before his death, King Piccolo created an egg containing his reincarnated form, Piccolo Jr. This action preserved Kami's life, as the two were still connected.

In Dragon Ball GT, it is revealed that before the Nameless Namekian split into King Piccolo and Kami, he created a powerful set of Dragon Balls known as the Black Star Dragon Balls. Unlike the regular Dragon Balls, these possessed significantly greater power. However, after the Nameless Namekian separated into two beings, the Black Star Dragon Balls became inert, as their creator no longer existed as a single entity.

When Piccolo and Kami reunited during the events of Dragon Ball Z, the Black Star Dragon Balls were reactivated. To prevent their misuse, they were hidden on The Lookout by Kami, as their use carried a catastrophic side effect—any wish made using the Black Star Dragon Balls would trigger the destruction of the planet from which the wish was made, unless the Dragon Balls were gathered and returned to their original location within a year. This immense risk to Earth played a central role in the plot of Dragon Ball GT.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In most flashbacks in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, the Nameless Namekian is shown splitting into two beings: Kami and King Piccolo.
  • In Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors, it is implied that the Nameless Namekian's full potential could be unlocked if Piccolo Jr. fused with both Kami and King Piccolo. While Piccolo is the reincarnation of King Piccolo, he is not exactly King Piccolo himself. Piccolo acknowledges this, though he states that fusing with his father would mean inviting evil back into his heart. However, it is suggested that Piccolo would likely be able to suppress this evil. In this alternate scenario, the Nameless Namekian was capable of surpassing Super Buu in power, though it was still not enough to destroy him.
  • In Budokai Tenkaichi 3, King Piccolo has a special dialogue with Piccolo Jr. where he suggests merging with him. Piccolo Jr., however, declines. If Piccolo Jr. wins, he declares that he would only fuse with his father if the resulting personality was based on his own, similar to his fusion with Kami.
