Nappa (ナッパ) is a mid-class Saiyan warrior from Planet Vegeta, known for his role as Vegeta's combat partner and as the former general of the Saiyan Army before the destruction of his home planet. After the Saiyan race was nearly wiped out, he, along with Vegeta and Raditz, served under Frieza and eventually traveled to Earth.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Nappa is a tall, muscular man, whose Saiyan heritage gives him the appearance of being in his mid-30s, although he is actually around 50 years old when first introduced. He is typically seen wearing a set of Battle Armor with large shoulder, hip, and crotch guards, and armored gloves and boots. His armor has appeared in different color combinations over time. Nappa is known for his thin mustache, which changes slightly throughout his life. In "Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku," Nappa is depicted with a small patch of hair on his head. Like other Saiyans, he wears a scouter.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Nappa has a destructive and sadistic personality, reveling in causing destruction and engaging in combat. He is cocky and often toys with his opponents, enjoying their suffering and taunting them, especially Goku. Despite his arrogance, Nappa becomes enraged and loses his composure when faced with resistance or injury, revealing a vain side where he values his unscathed appearance. He tends to rely on brute strength rather than strategy and often has to be reminded by Vegeta to remain calm. Despite his aggressive nature, Nappa is shown to respect Vegeta, apologizing when reprimanded.

There is a more sympathetic side to Nappa, particularly in a flashback during the Frieza Saga where he is shown to be shocked at Vegeta's lack of concern for the Saiyan race's destruction. Nappa demonstrates loyalty to his comrades, suggesting reviving Raditz with the Dragon Balls and considering the idea of repopulating the Saiyan race with Earthlings, though this is opposed by Vegeta. He is also willing to disobey orders from his superiors if they insult or go against his personal ideals.

In battle, Nappa is enthusiastic and treats his opponents like toys or prey, finding pleasure in making them suffer. His excitement often leads him to lose focus on his mission. He shows a degree of compassion towards the Saibamen he grows, becoming angry when they are killed, and shows a preference for their growth and training. Despite his brash nature, Nappa is capable of learning and adapting, understanding the importance of overcoming weaknesses, such as training his tail to avoid its inherent vulnerabilities.

Nappa harbors a deep grudge against Vegeta for killing him after he was crippled by Goku, seeking revenge in later appearances in "Dragon Ball GT" and various video games. Despite this, he is capable of reconciling with Vegeta under specific conditions, such as when Vegeta achieves Super Saiyan Blue. Nappa also dislikes being reminded of his inability to transform into a Super Saiyan, revealing his sensitivity about this shortcoming.

Overall, Nappa is portrayed as a fierce and brutal warrior who, despite his destructive tendencies, shows moments of loyalty, compassion, and a desire for growth and recognition.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Nappa was born into a noble Saiyan family, giving him a high rank and power level compared to other Saiyans. This noble status automatically placed him among the upper-level warriors of his race. During his youth, Nappa fought alongside his comrades in the Saiyan-Tuffle War, where the Saiyans eventually emerged victorious, gaining control over Planet Vegeta.

He later became a part of a group that included Raditz, with Vegeta joining them shortly afterward. Nappa served directly under Prince Vegeta, acting as his aide and combat partner. By the time Planet Vegeta was destroyed, Nappa was in his 20s or 30s. He, along with Vegeta and Raditz, were away on a mission and chose to ignore a recall order from the planet. When news arrived that Planet Vegeta had been destroyed by a meteorite, Nappa expressed concern about Raditz's and Vegeta's younger brothers, but neither showed interest in their fates.

A few days before the destruction of Planet Vegeta in Age 737, Nappa was seen observing the young Vegeta battle a group of Saibamen on monitor screens. Following this, Nappa and Vegeta discussed Frieza, their overlord. In an anime-only flashback during the Frieza Saga, Nappa, Raditz, and Vegeta are shown returning from their conquest of Planet Shikk, expecting recognition for their victory. However, they were instead met with insults from Frieza's henchmen, Dodoria and Zarbon. Nappa, enraged by the lack of acknowledgment, nearly attacked them but was stopped by Vegeta, who understood they would not stand a chance against Frieza and his minions.

During this time, Nappa mentioned hearing rumors that Planet Vegeta's destruction was not due to an asteroid, as officially claimed, but rather orchestrated by Frieza himself. Vegeta, however, dismissed these rumors, expressing indifference towards the loss of their race and implying that the Saiyans were weak for having been destroyed so easily.

Eventually, Nappa, Vegeta, and Raditz sought to conquer another planet to sell it for a high price, but the inhabitants proved too powerful, forcing them to abandon the mission temporarily. Soon after, they learned of the existence of Raditz's younger brother, Kakarot (Goku), who had been living on Earth. While Raditz was sent to Earth to confront Goku, Nappa continued his mission with Vegeta to conquer other worlds.

Dragon Ball Z:[edit | edit source]

Saiyan Saga[edit | edit source]

Nappa first appears in the Saiyan Saga alongside Vegeta, receiving a distress call from Raditz after he is defeated by Goku and Piccolo on Earth. Raditz informs them about the Dragon Balls, hoping they will use them to resurrect him. Nappa briefly considers this but Vegeta decides instead to seek immortality for themselves. They also note the high power level of Goku's son, Gohan, a hybrid Saiyan-Earthling. Nappa suggests taking over Earth to breed powerful half-Saiyans, but Vegeta dismisses the idea, fearing they could become stronger than them, and instead focuses on the Dragon Balls for immortality.

On their way to Earth, Nappa and Vegeta make a stop on the planet Arlia, where they defeat the planet’s strongest warrior, Yetti, and its king, King Moai, before Vegeta destroys the entire planet.

Upon arrival on Earth, Nappa demonstrates his power by destroying an entire city with his Volcano Explosion attack. Vegeta warns him not to waste his energy or risk destroying any Dragon Balls. They then head towards Gohan, Piccolo, and Krillin, encountering them shortly before Yamcha, Chiaotzu, and Tien Shinhan arrive.

Nappa reads the fighters' power levels and mocks them, but Vegeta discards his scouter, aware that the fighters can hide their true power. Nappa then plants six seeds in the ground, from which Saibamen emerge. Tien quickly defeats one of them, surprising Nappa, as their power levels are equal to Raditz's. After the Saibamen are destroyed, Nappa displays his power by breaking Tien's arm with a single punch.

The battle escalates as Nappa faces the Dragon Team:

  • Chiaotzu self-destructs on Nappa's back, but fails to damage him significantly.
  • Tien dies after using his last energy in a failed attack against Nappa.
  • Piccolo tries to execute a team attack on Nappa, but Gohan hesitates, causing the plan to fail.
  • Vegeta pauses the battle for three hours to allow Goku (Kakarot) to arrive, finding it amusing that the others have faith in such a "low-level" Saiyan.

During the pause, Nappa destroys a news crew and decimates military forces trying to intervene, showing signs of exertion. After three hours, Nappa sheds his armor to unleash his full power. Piccolo’s plan to grab Nappa’s tail fails, as Nappa is immune to the tactic. Nappa injures Piccolo, tortures Krillin, and bullies Gohan. Krillin’s Destructo Disc narrowly misses Nappa, leaving a scar on his cheek. Nappa then attempts to kill Krillin, but is stopped by Piccolo’s Ki Blast.

Nappa continues to toy with Gohan, but Gohan eventually retaliates, enraging Nappa. Nappa kills Piccolo when he sacrifices himself to save Gohan from a deadly attack. Enraged, Gohan uses all his power to fire a Masenko, which only makes Nappa's arm numb.

Just as Nappa is about to finish off Gohan, Goku arrives. Nappa initially dismisses Goku, but is shocked when Goku easily dodges his attacks. Goku dominates their battle, and even after Vegeta urges Nappa to calm down and fight with better technique, Nappa is hopelessly outmatched. Nappa uses his ultimate attack, which Goku counters effortlessly.

Realizing he is no match for Goku, Nappa targets Gohan and Krillin. Goku uses the Kaio-ken technique to stop him, breaking Nappa's back with a powerful attack. Goku tosses the defeated Nappa to Vegeta’s feet. Nappa begs for help, but Vegeta, seeing him as useless, throws him into the air and kills him with his Galaxy Breaker attack.

Nappa is sent to Hell by King Yemma upon his death, where he joins Raditz. According to Daizenshuu 7, Nappa was in his 50s at the time of his death

Dragon Ball Super:[edit | edit source]

"Future" Trunks Saga[edit | edit source]

During the "Future" Trunks Saga, Nappa appears as an illusion when Goku and Krillin are sent into a mysterious forest to retrieve a special herb for Master Roshi. In the forest, illusions of past villains, including Nappa, materialize to challenge the duo. Even though Nappa didn't kill Krillin in the past, his sudden appearance still terrifies Krillin, who ends up surrounded by multiple illusions of Nappa. Krillin tries to fight them off using the Solar Flare and Destructo Disc, but his efforts are ineffective. He notices a unique energy from a bisected Nappa before it reforms. Krillin ultimately makes all the illusions freeze by conquering his fear. After defeating one illusion of Nappa, all the others disintegrate as Krillin overcomes his fear of his past foes.

Dragon Ball GT:[edit | edit source]

Super 17 Saga[edit | edit source]

In the Super 17 Saga, Nappa escapes from Hell alongside other villains thanks to a dimensional hole created by Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu. One of his first actions upon returning to life is to destroy an entire city, much like he did when he first landed on Earth. Shortly afterward, Nappa encounters his former master and partner, Vegeta, who killed him many years ago.

Upon hearing Vegeta's voice, Nappa becomes enraged, trembling with anger over his previous betrayal. Vegeta calls Nappa a "brainless idiot who knows only how to destroy" (as cited in the Funimation dub). Vegeta offers Nappa a chance to escape, threatening to kill him again if he doesn't. However, Nappa, driven by a desire for revenge, angrily lunges at Vegeta. Vegeta easily defeats him again, this time killing Nappa with an Energy Palm.

Nappa is later seen in Hell alongside General Blue, Staff Officer Black, and Major Metallitron, approaching Piccolo, who presumably defeats them.

Film Appearances[edit | edit source]

Bardock - The Father of Goku[edit | edit source]

In this movie, Nappa appears in his mid-30s, sporting hair rather than his signature bald look seen in the series. He is shown observing a young Vegeta training by fighting and defeating several Saibamen with ease. After the training, a guard comments on Vegeta's impressive strength and wonders what he will be like as he gets older. Nappa advises the guard to stay on the prince's good side. He gives Vegeta his armor and praises him as the best, but Vegeta dismisses him, telling him to quit his flattery. Later, Vegeta confides in Nappa that he plans to overthrow Frieza one day, to which Nappa expresses his support for such a rebellion. Nappa does not appear again in the remainder of the movie.

Broly[edit | edit source]

In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Nappa is shown on another planet, having recently conquered it with Prince Vegeta, a young Raditz, and two other Saiyan survivors. They receive a message via a scouter informing them that Planet Vegeta has been destroyed by a meteor. This news shocks Nappa and the other Saiyan. Nappa then asks Vegeta about his brother, to which Vegeta responds indifferently, showing no concern over his brother's fate.

Other Dragon Ball Stories[edit | edit source]

Dragon Ball SD: Emperor Pilaf Saga[edit | edit source]

In Dragon Ball SD Chapter 5, Nappa makes a brief appearance alongside Raditz and Vegeta. After Vegeta sneezes, Nappa jokingly asks if Vegeta has caught a cold. This occurs when, on Earth, Bulma mentions her desire to marry a handsome prince.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2[edit | edit source]

In an altered timeline of the Saiyan conflict in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Nappa and Vegeta transform into Great Apes and defeat Gohan and Krillin, leaving Goku at their mercy. The Future Warrior from Age 852 is sent back in time to correct the altered history. Initially, the warrior fights alongside the Z Fighters to engage Nappa but is then called to assist Goku, who is held up by Turles and the Time Breakers. This diversion allows Nappa to kill Yamcha, Tien, and Piccolo, maintaining the timeline's original events.

After helping Goku defeat Turles, the Future Warrior returns to save Krillin and Gohan just in time. While Goku fights Vegeta, the Future Warrior battles Nappa, and eventually, Vegeta transforms himself and Nappa into Great Apes using a Power Ball. As Goku faces Great Ape Vegeta, the Future Warrior defeats and kills Great Ape Nappa, restoring the original timeline.

Dragon Ball Fusions[edit | edit source]

In Dragon Ball Fusions, Nappa and Raditz find themselves in the Timespace Rift created by Tekka and Pinich's wish to Shenron. They encounter Goten and Trunks after receiving Ziku from Bulma. Initially mistaking Tekka for Goten and Trunks due to detecting their ki signatures, they decide to toy with Tekka instead of killing them. Nappa reveals that he is a Power type, stronger than Technique types but weaker against Speed types.

When Tekka chooses the same type twice, Nappa and Raditz grow bored and nearly kill Tekka, but Goten and Trunks intervene, saving them. After Tekka's team recruits Kid Goku, Nappa and Raditz confront them again, having learned the Fusion Dance from watching Goten and Trunks. They fuse into "Natz," prompting Goten and Trunks to fuse into Gotenks to assist Tekka and Kid Goku in defeating Natz, which ultimately causes Nappa and Raditz to defuse.

FighterZ[edit | edit source]

Super Warrior Arc[edit | edit source]

Nappa is turned into food and consumed by Android 21. She finds his taste lacking due to his low power level compared to other villains.

Android 21 Arc[edit | edit source]

Nappa's fate is not explicitly shown, but it is implied that he is either eaten by Android 21 or killed by the Z Fighters before they team up with the good version of Android 21, Android 18, and Android 17 after the death of Android 16.

Enemy Warrior Arc[edit | edit source]

Nappa is seen shouting his intention to destroy everything. Frieza arrives and notes that Nappa seems slightly different from the clones he previously fought. When Nappa threatens to tear Frieza apart, Frieza mocks him for his stupidity and easily defeats him while holding back. Nappa then recognizes Frieza and begs for forgiveness, apologizing for not recognizing him in his new form. Frieza criticizes Nappa's loyalty, but Nappa pledges to devote his life to serving him.

World Mission[edit | edit source]

In Chapter 2, Sub Chapter 1: "An Anomaly?! The Saiyans Strike!", Beat and Note are sent to investigate Gizard Wasteland for anomalies in the SDBH game world's timeline. They encounter Nappa and Vegeta, who have arrived on Earth earlier than expected, along with Raditz (who survived his previous battle with Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo) and Turles.

With the Z Fighters not yet present, Beat and Note confront the Saiyans in their place. They manage to defeat Nappa, Raditz, and Turles. Vegeta then faces Beat and Note, revealing he was holding back for Goku's arrival. When Goku and the other Z Fighters arrive, Vegeta reveals he has achieved Super Saiyan 3 due to the anomaly. However, with the help of the Z Fighters, Beat and Note defeat Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta.

Later, Beat and Note chase Vegeta into an Extra Dimensional Space, where they find Vegeta reunited with Nappa and Raditz (either revived or surviving due to the anomaly). Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta, Raditz, Nappa, and some Saibamen battle the heroes and Goku. Despite Raditz and Nappa becoming stronger due to Saiyan Power, they are eventually overwhelmed. Raditz transforms into a Super Saiyan 3, followed by Nappa, who does so out of jealousy.

Vegeta welcomes their new power, but Great Saiyaman 3 notes the toll the transformation takes on their bodies. As predicted, the strain of the Super Saiyan 3 form is especially severe on Nappa, causing him to die in battle. Raditz and Vegeta also revert to their base forms due to the transformation's toll but survive. Vegeta transforms himself and Raditz into Great Apes with a Power Ball. They are ultimately defeated, with Raditz perishing in his Great Ape form while Vegeta flees Earth, allowing the timeline to revert to normal.

Legends[edit | edit source]

Tournament of Time[edit | edit source]

In Age 780, during the Tournament of Time, Nappa and Vegeta from the period before the Saiyan invasion of Earth in Age 762 are among the participants.

Master Nappa?![edit | edit source]

After a battle with Raditz, which leaves Piccolo severely injured, Beerus and Whis search for recruits to join Team Beerus to uncover the mastermind behind the tournament. Beerus decides that Shallot, Zahha, and Kid Gohan need a mentor to defeat Raditz and chooses Vegeta, forcing him to train them under threat of death.

Nappa proves too powerful for the three, leading them to train on their own by fighting other tournament participants. They eventually challenge Nappa again, and Shallot makes a bet that if they knock him out, he will train them. Shallot succeeds, and despite misunderstandings about Shallot's motivations, Nappa becomes their mentor.

Under Nappa's guidance, the three begin by fighting groups of Saibamen to build stamina. When Vegeta stops Nappa from wasting more Saibamen, Nappa personally spars with them. Whis later informs Vegeta that the three will face Nappa and Vegeta in a final test, with Beerus threatening to destroy Vegeta if they fail but not allowing them to win easily.

During the test, Shallot, Zahha, and Gohan defeat Vegeta and Nappa, completing their training. Nappa and Vegeta bid farewell as their students set out to defeat Raditz, who is under the influence of Dark Ki. After the students succeed, Nappa and Vegeta return to the Capitol.

When Shallot refuses Vegeta's offer to join them, Vegeta insists on a fight to settle the matter. However, fearing the battle could destroy the Capitol, Beerus intervenes. Nappa, frustrated with Beerus' authority, attacks him but is easily defeated by a Power Flick. To avoid further conflict, Vegeta and Nappa leave, with Vegeta promising that Shallot will join them next time they meet.

Kakarot[edit | edit source]

Saiyan Saga[edit | edit source]

In Raditz's flashback, Nappa (referred to as "Brawny Man" until later in the story) is shown invading a planet alongside Raditz and Vegeta. He mocks Raditz as "Raditz the Runt" after Vegeta complains they could have conquered the planet faster if not for Raditz's weakness. Vegeta threatens to kill Raditz for dragging them down, leading Raditz to recall his younger brother Kakarot (Goku) was sent to Earth. Raditz suggests retrieving Kakarot to help conquer their next target, and Vegeta grants permission.

Nappa and Vegeta later learn of Raditz's death at the hands of Piccolo via their Scouters and decide to seek the Dragon Balls for immortality, rejecting the idea of resurrecting Raditz. When they land in East City, Nappa destroys it with an explosion visible from space. They then confront Gohan, Piccolo, and the Z Fighters in the Central Plains Area. At Vegeta's request, Nappa releases the Saibamen by throwing their seeds on the ground. The Saibamen sprout, and Gohan and Yamcha face off against them. Yamcha defeats one, but it self-destructs, killing him.

The battle continues with the Z Fighters struggling against Nappa. Tien loses an arm, and Chiaotzu sacrifices himself to injure Nappa, but to no avail. Tien uses the last of his energy for a Spirit Tri-Beam attack that fails to kill Nappa, leading to his death. Vegeta agrees to wait for Kakarot's arrival, but Piccolo is killed protecting Gohan from Nappa's Bomber DX, which also leads to Kami's death. Goku arrives just in time, using the Kaioken to defeat and cripple Nappa. With Nappa no longer useful, Vegeta kills him.

Intermission 2[edit | edit source]

After the Frieza Saga, Gohan uses the Dragon Balls to revive Nappa, hoping to give him a second chance and for training purposes. Nappa, unaware of Gohan's newfound strength, initially refuses to cooperate but is quickly defeated in battle. Acknowledging Gohan's superiority, Nappa agrees to stay on Earth and train with the Dragon Team, although he hints that he may return to his evil ways if he becomes stronger.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as Yamcha[edit | edit source]

Vegeta and Nappa follow the same course of events as in the original Saiyan Saga. However, when the reincarnated Yamcha arrives and effortlessly deals with the Saibamen, Nappa recklessly attacks him despite Vegeta's warning that Yamcha's power level is "over 10,000." Nappa is swiftly defeated by Yamcha's quick Kamehameha

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Name Origin: Nappa's name is a pun on a type of Chinese cabbage.
  • Cameo Appearance: An alternate-colored version of Nappa and Vegeta appears in a brief cameo in "Reunions" alongside Raditz.
  • Scouter Details: Nappa's scouter is the only one, outside of filler episodes, not known to be destroyed. He removes it before his fight on Vegeta's advice and isn't seen picking it up before his death. In the anime, he briefly wears the scouter again while destroying another city, a continuity error caused by reused animation footage.
  • Scouter in Video Games: Nappa's scouter model appears as an accessory in Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 under the name "Scouter (Blue)."
  • Tail Insusceptibility: Like Vegeta and Kid Goku, Nappa is not affected by pain when his tail is mistreated. In Xenoverse 2, he mentions that Raditz skipped "Tail training day" and criticizes his lack of training to overcome this weakness.
  • Color Inconsistencies: Nappa's armor color scheme has been inconsistent throughout the franchise. Traditionally yellow and blue, his armor has appeared in black, purple, orange, and other colors across various media. This inconsistency led to his most common depictions: yellow with black or yellow with dark green or blue shades.
  • Kills in Battle: The only Z Fighter Nappa technically kills is Piccolo, who dies shielding Gohan. Yamcha is killed by a Saibaman, Chiaotzu self-destructs, and Tien dies after expending all his energy. Despite this, Nappa takes credit for their deaths when meeting Goku but admits he didn't kill Chiaotzu.
  • First Villain Injured by Kaioken: Nappa is the first villain to be injured by Goku's Kaioken technique.
  • Killed by Vegeta: Nappa is the second villain to be killed by Vegeta, the first being a Saibaman. He also holds the distinction of being the first villain Vegeta kills after being defeated by Goku.
  • Grudge Against Vegeta: Nappa harbors a grudge against Vegeta for betraying and killing him, which is shown when he is revived in Dragon Ball GT and various video games like Dragon Ball FighterZ. However, in a special dialogue in FighterZ, Nappa suggests forgiving Vegeta and moving on.
  • Resurrection Implications: The Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game card "Nappa Restored" implies Nappa was revived by a wish to revive those killed by Frieza's men, though this is technically accurate since Vegeta was still under Frieza's command during the Saiyan Saga.
  • Super Saiyan Musings: In Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Nappa wonders if his goatee would grow if he became a Super Saiyan. In Super Dragon Ball Heroes, his Super Saiyan 3 form does include a longer goatee, possibly referencing this comment.
  • Super Saiyan Form in Xenoverse: In Xenoverse 2, Nappa remains bald when he transforms into his standard Super Saiyan form, but his goatee turns blonde. He skips Super Saiyan 1 and 2 and transforms directly into Super Saiyan 3 in Super Dragon Ball Heroes.
  • Humorous Game References: Nappa has several humorous dialogues and moments in the franchise's games, including pondering about his appearance as a Super Saiyan or showing reluctance but eventual acceptance to pose with the Neo Ginyu Force.
  • Nappa's Voice Actor in Parody: Takahata101 (Curtis Arnott), who voices Male Voice Option 8 in the Xenoverse series, is known for voicing Nappa in the TeamFourStar's Dragon Ball Z: Abridged parody series.
  • Nappa Day: July 8th is celebrated as "Nappa Day," making Nappa one of the few Dragon Ball characters with an unofficial holiday, alongside Goku.
