Appearance[edit | edit source]

The design of the Sacred Beasts, including Raviel, was overseen by Kenichi Hara. Each Sacred Beast is inspired by one of the three Egyptian God Cards, with Raviel serving as the counterpart to Obelisk the Tormentor. Despite these similarities, the Sacred Beasts possess unique visual features that distinguish them from their predecessors, such as translucent wings, exaggerated claws, and skeletal motifs.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Raviel, Lord of Phantasms, embodies overwhelming dominance and relentless power, making it a fearsome presence among the Sacred Beasts. As a counterpart to Obelisk the Tormentor, Raviel exudes a commanding and oppressive aura, symbolizing its role as a destroyer and conqueror.

Unlike the Egyptian God Cards, the Sacred Beasts are portrayed with darker, more malevolent energy, and Raviel is no exception. Its actions suggest an entity driven by a hunger for strength, as seen in its ability to generate Phantom Tokens and absorb their power to increase its own. This reflects a predatory and parasitic nature, thriving by consuming and dominating lesser beings.

When summoned by a master like Kagemaru or Yubel, Raviel serves as a weapon of destruction, obedient yet embodying the ambition and ruthlessness of its summoner. Its personality mirrors its dueling strategy: overwhelming foes with brute force while steadily growing stronger. Raviel’s terrifying presence makes it a symbol of unyielding strength and conquest, fully embracing the chaos and devastation that define the Sacred Beasts.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX[edit | edit source]

In Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, the Sacred Beasts are legendary entities whose cards were sealed by Kagemaru beneath Duel Academy, behind the Spirit Gates. These gates require seven Spirit Keys to open. Although Kagemaru initially failed to unlock their power, the Sacred Beasts were prophesied to bring chaos and darkness upon the world if ever released.

The Shadow Riders sought to acquire the Spirit Keys to awaken the Sacred Beasts. However, opening the gates required a strong dueling presence, making attempts like Don Zaloog’s theft of the keys ineffective. To counter this threat, seven top duelists from Duel Academy were chosen to guard the keys: Jaden Yuki, Zane Truesdale, Chazz Princeton, Alexis Rhodes, Bastion Misawa, Lyman Banner (secretly a Shadow Rider), and Vellian Crowler. Although the Shadow Riders were defeated, Kagemaru used the dueling energy generated from the battles to awaken the Sacred Beasts.

In exchange for their release, the Sacred Beasts began restoring Kagemaru’s youth by absorbing energy from Duel Monster spirits. Kagemaru summoned Raviel as part of his strategy to dominate, but Jaden Yuki’s resilience led to Kagemaru’s downfall. Following his defeat, the Sacred Beasts were sealed once again.

In the third season, after Duel Academy was transported to an alternate dimension, a Yubel-possessed Marcel Bonaparte retrieved the Sacred Beasts and constructed a deck centered around them. This deck enhanced the speed of summoning the Sacred Beasts and facilitated the summoning of their fusion form, Chaos Phantasm Armityle.

Later, Jesse Anderson, also possessed by Yubel, used a deck designed to quickly summon the Sacred Beasts and Armityle. Although Yubel did not use the Sacred Beasts in her final duel with Jaden, Raviel appeared in her deck. Following Yubel’s merger with Jaden, the ultimate fate of the Sacred Beasts remains uncertain, though it is presumed that Jaden returned them to their resting place.

  • The design of Raviel, Lord of Phantasms was overseen by Kenichi Hara.
  • The seven Spirit Keys are depicted in this card's artwork.
  • Raviel, Lord of Phantasms is considered the Sacred Beast counterpart of the Egyptian God Card Obelisk the Tormentor. This connection is evident in Raviel’s blue color, humanoid form, and ATK-gaining effects reminiscent of Obelisk.
  • Similar to Obelisk's anime effect, this card can tribute a monster to increase its attack power.
  • The Sacred Beasts' names are inspired by angels in Judeo-Christian traditions. Raviel’s name is an alternate spelling of Raziel, the angel of mysteries.
  • At one point, Raviel, Lord of Phantasms was tied with The Wicked Dreadroot and Darkness Neosphere for the highest original ATK and DEF of any Fiend monster in the game. Currently, Dystopia the Despondent holds this title.
  • According to a Pojo post by Dan Scheidegger, an Upper Deck Entertainment employee, this card was originally approved to include "Genma" in its TCG name. However, a third company rejected the name, claiming it wasn’t "cool enough." Dan clarified that this decision was not related to censorship.
