Hamon, Lord of Striking Thunder is one of the three Sacred Beast cards sought after by Kagemaru in order to restore his youth in Yu-Gi-Oh GX

Appearance[edit | edit source]

The design of the Sacred Beast Hamon, Lord of Striking Thunder was overseen by Kenichi Hara. Each Sacred Beast mirrors one of the three Egyptian God Cards; Hamon finds its counterpart in The Winged Dragon of Ra. Despite these parallels, the Sacred Beasts possess distinct visual traits, including translucent wings, exaggerated claws, and skeletal features, setting them apart from their Egyptian God predecessors.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Hamon, Lord of Striking Thunder, exudes an aura of dominance and destruction, befitting its role as one of the Sacred Beasts. As the counterpart of The Winged Dragon of Ra, it embodies the elemental force of lightning and thunder, with a personality that reflects sheer power and overwhelming authority.

Unlike its Egyptian God counterpart, Hamon is portrayed with a darker, more malevolent presence, aligning with the ominous nature of the Sacred Beasts. Its abilities, such as inflicting damage to opponents when it destroys monsters in battle, highlight its unrelenting aggression and tactical dominance. Hamon thrives on control and devastation, signifying its mastery over the battlefield.

Hamon's summoning conditions, requiring the sacrifice of Continuous Spell Cards, further emphasize its connection to sustained and calculated power. It reflects a creature that feeds off its environment, growing stronger as it consumes resources to fuel its destructive potential.

As a servant of those who summon it, such as Kagemaru or Yubel, Hamon becomes a loyal enforcer of their ambitions, embodying their thirst for power and chaos. Its personality aligns with the overarching goal of the Sacred Beasts: to dominate and overwhelm, leaving no room for resistance in its wake.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX[edit | edit source]

In Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, the Sacred Beasts are legendary creatures whose cards were sealed by Kagemaru beneath Duel Academy, behind the Spirit Gates. These gates could only be opened with seven Spirit Keys, which Kagemaru lacked the power to utilize at the time. If unleashed, the Sacred Beasts would plunge the world into chaos and darkness, annihilating everything in their path.

The Shadow Riders sought to collect the Spirit Keys to awaken the Sacred Beasts. Opening the gates required a strong dueling presence; stolen keys, such as in Don Zaloog’s failed attempt, would not suffice. To defend against this threat, seven of Duel Academy's top duelists were chosen: Jaden Yuki, Zane Truesdale, Chazz Princeton, Alexis Rhodes, Bastion Misawa, Lyman Banner (who secretly was a Shadow Rider), and Vellian Crowler.

Although the Shadow Riders were ultimately defeated, Kagemaru managed to awaken the Sacred Beasts using the energy from these duels. Freed from their imprisonment, the Sacred Beasts began to restore Kagemaru’s youth and strength by draining energy from Duel Monster spirits. However, Jaden Yuki’s intervention led to Kagemaru's defeat, and the Sacred Beasts were once again sealed.

In the third season, after Duel Academy is transported to an alternate dimension, a Yubel-possessed Marcel Bonaparte retrieves the Sacred Beasts and builds a Deck to accelerate their Summoning. His Deck also supports their fusion form, Chaos Phantasm Armityle.

When Jesse Anderson, possessed by Yubel, reappears after his disappearance (episodes 131 to 147), he uses a Deck designed to summon the Sacred Beasts and Armityle rapidly. Although Yubel does not use the Sacred Beasts in her final duel against Jaden, Raviel is shown to be part of her Deck. The fate of the Sacred Beasts following Yubel's merger with Jaden is uncertain, though it is likely that Jaden returned them to their resting place.

  • Hamon, Lord of Striking Thunder serves as the Sacred Beast counterpart to The Winged Dragon of Ra, distinguished by its yellow coloration and draconian appearance. While The Winged Dragon of Ra represents the Egyptian God entity of fire, Hamon symbolizes the Sacred Beast entity of lightning.
  • In homage to The Winged Dragon of Ra, Hamon's attack is named Cerulean Skyfire.
  • This card's effect of inflicting damage to the opponent is a reversal of Ra's anime effect. With Ra, the player pays 1000 Life Points to destroy a monster, whereas Hamon causes the opponent to lose 1000 Life Points when it destroys a monster in battle.
  • The Sacred Beasts derive their names from angels in Judeo-Christian tradition.
  • Hamon's name is rooted in the Book of Enoch.
  • This card boasts the highest original ATK and DEF among all Thunder-Type monsters.

  • Of all the Sacred Beasts, Hamon is the only one whose name remained unchanged in the TCG adaptation
