Appearance

Bandit Keith is a tall, muscular man with blonde hair, often seen wearing a red bandana with an American flag design. He typically wears a sleeveless black leather vest over a white tank top, along with blue jeans and black boots, giving him the rugged appearance of a biker or outlaw. His signature sunglasses conceal his eyes, adding to his intimidating demeanor. In Yu-Gi-Oh! R, after his resurrection, he appears more disheveled, with a darker outfit and an unhinged expression, emphasizing his descent into obsession and revenge.

Personality

Bandit Keith is arrogant, ruthless, and highly competitive, valuing victory above all else. He is willing to cheat, manipulate, and intimidate others to get what he wants, believing that "a real man makes his own luck." His pride is immense, and he refuses to accept defeat gracefully, often lashing out violently when he loses.

Bitter and vengeful, Keith harbors deep grudges against those who have bested him, particularly Pegasus and Joey. His fixation on revenge drives him to reckless behavior, as seen in Yu-Gi-Oh! R, where his sole motivation for continuing to fight is to defeat Joey. Despite his bravado, Keith's reliance on cheating and underhanded tactics suggests insecurity—he cannot tolerate the idea of being outmatched.

After his resurrection, Keith becomes even more unhinged, reveling in the chaos he creates. He displays a nihilistic attitude, caring little for the goals of others and focusing solely on his personal vendetta. However, when Joey offers him a fair rematch without hatred, it hints that, deep down, Keith still has a competitive spirit beyond his thirst for revenge.

Biography

Background

During the final round of the Intercontinental Championship tournament in New York City, Keith faced Maximillion Pegasus. Unbeknownst to him, Pegasus used his Millennium Eye to read Keith’s mind and predict every move. Before the match ended, Pegasus wrote instructions on a piece of paper and handed it to a boy named Sam from the audience, instructing him to duel in Keith’s place. Following Pegasus' directions, Sam defeated Keith in a single turn.

Humiliated and shocked at being bested by a child, Keith fell into a deep depression. Determined to reclaim his former glory and take revenge on Pegasus, he secretly entered the Duelist Kingdom tournament.

Duelist Kingdom

At Duelist Kingdom, Keith took three duelists—Zygor, Sid, and Bones—under his wing, using them as pawns in his quest for victory. He loaned Bones several powerful cards, including "Call of the Haunted," to strengthen his Deck before having him duel Joey Wheeler. Throughout the match, Keith dictated Bones’s moves, but Joey ultimately won. Disgusted, Keith berated Bones and refused to face Joey himself. Instead, he ambushed his own minions, stealing their Star Chips to qualify for the tournament finals. He then trapped Joey, Yugi, and their friends inside a cave before leaving.

After entering Pegasus’ castle, Keith was surprised to see Yugi and his friends had escaped. He watched the rematch between Yugi and Kaiba, initially impressed by Yugi’s skill but stunned when Yugi forfeited after Kaiba threatened his own life.

Duel with Joey

Keith faced Joey in the tournament semifinals, using a Machine Deck with high-powered monsters and immunity to magic-based effects. Despite his strategic advantage, he resorted to cheating, secretly drawing extra cards hidden beneath his wristband to boost his monsters. However, Joey overcame Keith’s tactics and emerged victorious.

Furious, Keith refused to accept defeat and attempted to have Joey disqualified by claiming that Joey's entry card was not originally his. Joey admitted that Mai Valentine had given it to him, but questioned how Keith knew this. Pegasus quickly exposed Keith’s deception, pointing out that he had stolen Joey’s original entry card and thus knew it was missing.

Realizing his ploy had failed, Keith was disqualified from the tournament. Enraged, he broke free from security and confronted Pegasus in his private chamber, demanding the prize money at gunpoint (edited out in the dub). Pegasus, unimpressed by Keith’s desperation, mocked him for sinking so low. When Keith stepped forward, Pegasus discreetly activated a hidden trapdoor, sending him plummeting into the ocean.

Battle City

While struggling against the ocean currents, Bandit Keith was rescued by the Rare Hunters and fell under the control of Marik Ishtar. Under Marik’s influence, Keith disguised himself as a fortune teller and approached Yugi Muto, requesting to see his Millennium Puzzle. When Yugi handed it over, Keith immediately stole it and fled to a hidden arena. He chained the Puzzle to the battlefield, declaring that Yugi could only reclaim it by defeating him in a Duel. (In the English anime, Marik instructed Keith to win the Puzzle for him. In the Japanese version, Marik orchestrated the Duel hoping that Dark Yugi would emerge.)

Though Keith remained hooded, Yugi quickly identified him by his signature Machine Deck. At that moment, Marik revealed that the Rare Hunters had saved Keith and placed him under his control. With a deck enhanced by rare cards and his usual cheating—hiding extra cards in his sleeves—Keith began to overwhelm Yugi.

However, Yami Bakura, watching from the shadows, sensed the dark energy surrounding Keith and realized he was under hypnotic control. Not wanting Yugi to lose and forfeit the Millennium Puzzle, which he desired for himself, Bakura used the Millennium Ring to break Marik’s influence. In the ensuing struggle for control, Keith shattered the Puzzle against the console. (In the English version, this was due to Marik’s command. In the Japanese version, Keith did it of his own accord, believing the voice in his head was the spirit of the Puzzle.) Yami Bakura then swung down from above, knocking Keith off the arena.

Disoriented, Keith hallucinated Marik giving him orders. In his madness, he grabbed a metal pipe and attacked the illusionary figure, accidentally striking the arena’s power unit and causing an electrical fire. As the building began to burn, Joey and Tristan broke down the door. A terrified Keith ran past them, screaming that the arena was haunted.

Project R.A.

The following events from Yu-Gi-Oh! R are of disputed canon.

Yako Tenma resurrected Bandit Keith using The Wicked Avatar, seeking information about Pegasus' death, as Keith had competed in Duelist Kingdom. However, Keith deceitfully claimed that Yugi was responsible, further fueling Yako’s thirst for revenge. When he later discovered that Yugi hadn’t actually killed Pegasus, he was surprised but ultimately indifferent.

Keith first appears after Deschutes Lew’s defeat, seemingly attempting to take The Wicked Avatar while conversing with Yako. Yako explains that without the Duels, Project R.A. cannot succeed. Later, after Gekko Tenma allies with Yugi, Keith is found gambling with Ted Banias, who accuses him of cheating. Keith, in turn, accuses Gekko of intentionally losing to Banias to further Project R.A. However, he is left in shock as Gekko turns the Duel around, defeating Banias in a single turn. Enraged by Banias' loss, Keith violently beats him, doubling his supposed debt. After Banias loses consciousness, Yugi and Gekko demand the key card, unless Keith plans to challenge them next. Instead, Keith offers to take them directly to Yako himself.

On their way, they encounter Richie Merced and Depre Scott. Richie attacks Keith for trying to bypass them, hoping to lure out "someone special." Yugi defends Keith, and Gekko diffuses the situation by pointing out that Keith isn’t Richie's real target. As the Card Professors depart to Duel Yugi and Gekko, Keith struggles to his feet and walks away. Later, when Richie defeats Gekko and decides to go after Joey, Keith leaps from a balcony and attacks Richie in retaliation for his earlier beating. Richie mocks Keith, reminding him that he was merely a test subject for Pegasus' Summoning experiments. However, Keith dismisses this, declaring that Jory is his only target and the sole reason for his resurrection—he refuses to let Richie take him.

Unfamiliar with the new Duel rules, Keith challenges Richie and defeats him using The Wicked Eraser, further fueling Yako's plan to generate energy for Project R.A. After his victory, he takes the rare black Duel Disk, worn only by the top Card Professor, and claims the title for himself.

Later, Keith encounters Dark Yugi and Gekko, but before anything happens, Joey drops down from an air vent, mistaking Gekko for Yako and attacking him. Honda follows shortly after and notices Keith, but Joey appears to ignore him. Amused, Keith laughs, saying he hasn’t felt this alive since being resurrected. When Joey continues to disregard him, Keith loses his temper and threatens to shoot him if he doesn’t acknowledge him. Joey, having already noticed Keith, grins and mocks him before deciding to settle things once and for all. He lets Yugi, Gekko, and Honda pass while he prepares for a rematch with Keith.

Keith now wields a revamped Machine Deck featuring the Motor series alongside The Wicked Eraser. During the Duel, he reveals that he despises Joey just as much as Pegasus, blaming him for his downfall in Duelist Kingdom. With Pegasus dead, Keith has fixated on Joey as the only other Duelist to have ever humiliated him. He even admits to manipulating Yako's revenge plot to lure Joey into a fight, laughing at how easily the young Duelist fell for his deception.

As the Duel progresses, Joey plays Time Machine, a card Keith had left behind at Duelist Kingdom. Keith is furious, accusing Joey of stealing his card. However, Joey counters, suggesting Keith should offer something better when he loses—specifically, the black Duel Disk. Keith attempts to cheat by sneaking Ring of Destruction into play, but the Duel Disk’s alarm prevents him, enraging him at Seto Kaiba’s anti-cheating measures. Despite gaining the upper hand by sealing Joey’s Set cards and summoning The Wicked Eraser, Keith openly expresses his disdain for the card, finding victory with it uninteresting. Joey ultimately turns the tables using Summon Capture, stealing Keith’s Fiendish Engine Ω and destroying The Wicked Eraser.

As The Wicked Eraser is destroyed, its black blood floods the field, engulfing both Duelists in darkness. The shadowy chaos is only dispelled when Joey defeats Keith. Overcome with rage, Keith furiously throws the black Duel Disk at Joey, demanding another fight. However, instead of escalating the conflict, Joey returns the Time Machine card and offers Keith a real rematch—one without grudges, just for the thrill of battle. Keith, exhausted and defeated, slumps against the wall and collapses.

Legacy

Waking the Dragons

Ghost Bandit Keith

Keith's "lost soul" appeared when Yami Yugi journeyed to reconnect with his other half and later when Yami, Kaiba, and Joey entered Dartz’s lair.

Duel Links

Bandit Keith appears in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, continuing his relentless pursuit of victory. His introduction dialogue suggests that his obsession with winning—driving him to cheat—is rooted in hardships from his past. Notably, whenever he encounters Bonz in the game, there is clear hostility between them.

However, Keith’s own Main Deck primarily consists of Machine monsters, with a few Fiend-Type cards for support.

In his Duel against Yugi, Keith utilizes rare and formidable cards supplied by the Rare Hunters, such as the legendary Zera the Mant. Despite his skills and reputation, he frequently resorts to cheating, concealing extra cards within his wristband to manipulate his draws. When donning the Rare Hunter robes, he employs a hidden claw mechanism that discreetly feeds cards into his hand. Because the Duel arenas place Duelists at a significant distance from one another, Keith’s opponents often fail to notice his deceitful tactics.

Trivia

  • In the Manga After his Duel, Keith met Pegasus in the hall. He held out a knife and demanded that Pegasus give him the prize. Pegasus' guard prepared to take out a gun, but Pegasus insisted there was no need for a weapon. He commented on how undignified the "old 'prize king'" was now. Pegasus said that he was aware Keith had cheated against Jonouchi and that he intended to punish him. Keith did not care and said it was legal by his rules. Pegasus deemed Keith to have lost his Duelist's mind when they fought in America and inflicted the "Hand and Gun" Penalty Game on him. Keith's hand then turned into a gun, which he was forced to use to play Russian roulette with, killing himself.
  • In the English manga, much of Keith's dialogue is modified to include censored profanity, in part to reflect his ruder pattern of speech from the original Japanese. It also has him refer to Jonouchi, by the nickname, "Joey", which is his name in the English anime.
  • His blood type is O
  • Steak is his favourite food and sushi is his least favourite
  • In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, a parody character named Pirates Keith is listed as one of the duelists who battled Hunter Pace.
