Personality[edit | edit source]

King Chappa is a disciplined and honorable martial artist who takes great pride in his skills and achievements. His demeanor reflects the wisdom of a seasoned warrior, and he approaches challenges with confidence and determination. Despite his initial bravado, he is respectful of his opponents, even when defeated, as seen in his interactions with Goku during their matches.

Chappa is also a dedicated teacher and mentor, as evidenced by his commitment to training students at his temple. He values perseverance and hard work, traits he likely instills in those he trains. His humility is highlighted by his willingness to acknowledge his limitations, particularly when faced with opponents like Goku, who far exceed his abilities.

In later depictions, Chappa’s encouragement of Uub to enter the World Martial Arts Tournament showcases his supportive nature and belief in nurturing the potential of younger fighters. This further reinforces his role as a guiding figure in the martial arts world.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Dragon Ball[edit | edit source]

Tien Shinhan Saga[edit | edit source]

King Chappa participates in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, where he faces Goku in the preliminaries. Yamcha remarks that Chappa had previously won a tournament without being touched, underscoring his reputation as a skilled fighter.

Jackie Chun predicts a tough match for Goku, but the young warrior decisively defeats King Chappa, even after he resorts to his famous eight-handed technique. During the fight, Goku cleverly uses his breath to counter Chappa’s airborne attack, knocking him out with a well-timed kick.

King Piccolo Saga[edit | edit source]

Following the tournament, Chappa resumes training at his temple with a group of dedicated students. However, Tambourine, a minion of King Piccolo, targets him. Chappa valiantly employs his eight-handed technique in an attempt to defend himself but is overpowered and killed by Tambourine’s advanced One-Hundred Arms technique. His students' efforts to avenge him also end in tragedy.

Later, Chappa and others killed by King Piccolo and his minions are revived using Shenron's powers.

Piccolo Jr. Saga[edit | edit source]

Three years after his resurrection, King Chappa enters the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. He once again faces Goku in the preliminaries, but this time, the match ends even faster. Goku effortlessly dodges Chappa's attacks, outmaneuvering him with speed and knocking him out with a precise chop to the back of the neck.

After Dragon Ball Z[edit | edit source]

In Toyotarou’s artwork, it is hinted that King Chappa may have trained Uub until he turned ten years old. Chappa encourages Uub to enter the next World Martial Arts Tournament, a pivotal decision that ultimately leads to Uub's life-changing encounter with Goku.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • King Chappa shares similarities with Mr. Satan, including both being former World Martial Arts Champions before Goku and his friends began competing. They also sport afros and similarly styled mustaches, though Chappa leans more towards the spiritual side, while Mr. Satan embraces celebrity culture.
  • King Chappa's clothing and overall appearance bear a resemblance to Nam, another martial artist who fought Goku during the World Martial Arts Tournament. Notably, Nam's second outfit in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 closely mirrors King Chappa's attire, apart from the turban. This connection is humorously referenced in Chapter 14 of Dragon Ball SD, where Master Roshi jokes that Nam will later return as King Chappa.
  • When Chappa reunites with Goku after being revived, he recounts his encounter with Tambourine. Curiously, he claims to have survived the battle, despite having been killed. This could imply that he was rendered comatose during the fight or that he was unaware of his death.
  • King Chappa's name is derived from "chapati," an Indian flatbread.
