Outfits and Armor Options

Jesse’s clothing can change significantly based on story events and player choices. Examples include:

  • "Dork armor" (iron chestplate) worn briefly in Hero in Residence, humorously mocked by Petra and later destroyed.
  • In The Last Place You Look, players choose between Magnus’s or Ellegaard’s armor, with the option to later switch or keep it in A Block and a Hard Place.
  • In A Journey's End?, Jesse dons Tim’s armor for the battle against the Old Builders.
  • In Hero in Residence, Jesse can choose between all previously unlocked armor sets, each receiving commentary from Petra when examined.

Additional Outfits:

  • In Jailhouse Block, Jesse wears a prison uniform: white shirt with orange pants (or a white tank top for female Jesse).
  • If becoming an associate in the Sunshine Institute, Jesse wears a sleek black suit with purple accents.
  • In Below the Bedrock, winning a trivia game allows Jesse to wear Fred’s Sleeping Garments—a blue Admin-style outfit.
  • In the same episode, players can select damaged armor or the hidden Golden Apple armor with help from Lluna.
  • In Above and Beyond, Jesse sports a red-and-white fireworks uniform with a matching cap.

Personality

While Jesse’s core personality is shaped by the player’s dialogue choices and decisions—ranging from selfless to egotistical, polite to brash—there are consistent elements regardless of how they’re played. Jesse is deeply loyal, emotionally responsive, and morally grounded. They express heartfelt concern for friends, mourn the loss of their pet pig Reuben, and react with shock to traumatic events like Lukas being pushed from Sky City (determinant).

Multiple characters praise Jesse’s tenacity, and no matter the path chosen, Jesse emerges as a driven and courageous leader, willing to face incredible odds to protect their friends and the world around them.

Biography

Season 1 (2015–2016)

Jesse is the main protagonist of Minecraft: Story Mode, whose journey begins as a builder and fan of the legendary Order of the Stone—Gabriel, Ellegaard, Magnus, Soren, and Ivor. Alongside close friends Axel, Olivia, and their loyal pig Reuben, Jesse enters the EnderCon building competition. After a confrontation with their rival team, the Ocelots, Jesse ends up chasing after Reuben and crossing paths with Petra, who brings Jesse into a shady deal involving a Wither skull.

When the deal goes awry, Jesse and the group discover that Ivor, one of the original Order members, is planning to unleash a monstrous Wither Storm. Despite the group's efforts to stop it, the Wither Storm grows out of control. Jesse recruits Magnus and Ellegaard in hopes of building a Formidi-Bomb to destroy it. The bomb works—at a cost—but the creature reforms, more powerful than before.

Jesse ultimately forges an enchanted weapon with Ivor’s help and faces the storm head-on, managing to destroy the Command Block at its core. Although Jesse defeats the Wither Storm, the battle claims Reuben’s life—one of Jesse’s most heartbreaking moments.

Later, Jesse discovers a mysterious enchanted Flint and Steel linked to the ancient Old Builders. This leads Jesse, Petra, Lukas, and Ivor to Sky City, where they uncover the Eversource—an egg-laying chicken—and confront Blaze Rods leader Aiden. Jesse defeats Aiden and restores peace before continuing the search for a way home.

The group stumbles upon a portal corridor, leading to several adventures across bizarre dimensions. Jesse solves the mystery of a trapped mansion, defeats the mind-controlling computer PAMA with Harper’s help, and eventually enters a deadly tournament hosted by the Old Builders: Hadrian, Mevia, and Otto. After surviving the rigged games and freeing the other contestants, Jesse wins the Atlas, finally returning home.

Season 2 (2017)

Now the mayor of Beacontown, Jesse balances leadership with a craving for adventure. After receiving a call from Petra, Jesse investigates a mysterious pit—nicknamed the "heckmouth"—and discovers a Prismarine gauntlet that fuses to their hand. Joined by Petra, adventurer Jack, and his villager companion Nurm, Jesse learns the gauntlet is linked to an Ocean Monument where the Admin, a powerful being named Romeo, reveals himself by attacking the group in the form of a Prismarine Colossus.

Though Jesse defeats this form, the Admin returns with more games and manipulation, challenging Jesse to reclaim a powerful clock. Joined by rival-turned-ally Stella and her llama Lluna, the group journeys to the Admin’s ice palace. The clock is destroyed, and Jesse is betrayed—trapped in the Admin’s twisted prison, the Sunshine Institute, while the Admin assumes Jesse’s identity.

Inside, Jesse discovers the dangerous inmate known as Prisoner X—Xara, a former Admin stripped of her powers by Romeo. Together, Jesse, Radar, Petra/Jack, and the others escape the prison, but not without sacrifices. Jesse learns of a third Admin, Fred, and seeks his legendary weapon capable of stripping Romeo’s powers. In Fred’s Keep and Romeoburg, Jesse completes trials, solves puzzles, and retrieves the password to unlock the weapon.

Back home, Jesse plans a final confrontation with Romeo in the Terminal Space, the Admin’s lair. After surviving his trials and reuniting with allies like Lukas and Ivor, Jesse uses Fred’s gauntlet to defeat and depower Romeo. The story ends with a choice: offer Romeo redemption or leave him behind, and decide whether Jesse continues as Beacontown’s leader or sets out for new adventures with Petra.

Trivia

  • Jesse is one of only three characters in Minecraft: Story Mode voiced by multiple actors. The other two are Olivia (whose voice changes in Season 2) and Romeo.
  • In “A Block and a Hard Place,” if the player chooses to eat the potatoes, Jesse reveals that potatoes are their favorite food.
  • In “The Order of the Stone,” if Jesse chooses to return and save Lukas, they declare their personal motto: “No man left behind.”
  • Jesse is the only character in the series who can be either male or female, based on player choice.
  • In “A Journey’s End?”, Jesse is shown to be ambidextrous, wielding a pickaxe equally well in both hands.
  • Jesse demonstrates proficiency in nearly every skill class: builder, redstonist, architect, warrior, and even griefer. The only notable exception is brewing.
  • A glitch in “A Portal to Mystery” occasionally causes Jesse’s portrait to default to the unarmored Caucasian male version, regardless of the player's actual customization. Interestingly, this portrait appears at a time in the story when Jesse should still be wearing armor, suggesting it was created earlier in development.
  • Jesse's tenacity is a recurring theme recognized by several antagonists:
    • In “Assembly Required,” Ivor comments on Jesse's determination before their duel.
    • In “A Portal to Mystery,” the White Pumpkin (Cassie Rose) describes Jesse as "incredibly tenacious."
    • In “Access Denied,” PAMA acknowledges Jesse’s bravery and persistence as notable traits.
  • Despite being the hero, Jesse is also portrayed as one of the clumsiest characters—frequently dropping or losing important items such as the amulet, the Command Block weapon, and the enchanted Flint and Steel.
  • In Season 2, players can import their previous save but are still given the option to reselect Jesse’s gender and appearance. No in-universe explanation is provided for the change.
  • A visual bug in “Giant Consequences” causes all Jesse variants to appear with light green eyes, regardless of customization.
  • According to writer Eric Stirpe, Jesse is the shortest member of the New Order of the Stone.
