Appearance
Weevil's design features multiple layers of clothing and a wide range of expressions. His character design was overseen by Kazuki Takahashi. He wears large, round yellow glasses with an insect horn connecting the lenses in Season 1. In later seasons, his glasses are adorned with a beetle in the center and have holes on the legs. His Duelist Kingdom glasses appear to magnify his eyes. He has turquoise hair styled in a Beatles-like cut and blue eyes.
In the Duelist Kingdom arc, Weevil wears a green jacket with a raised collar, a white shirt, a red bow tie, brown trousers, and brown shoes. From Battle City onwards, he switches to a closed green jacket featuring a beetle pattern, black shorts, and green-and-black sneakers with wing-shaped laces. He carries a KaibaCorp Duel Disk on his left arm, later upgrading to a Chaos Duel Disk in the Waking the Dragons arc.
Personality
Weevil is a cunning and deceitful duelist who relies on underhanded tactics to gain an advantage. While he initially presents himself as polite and respectful, he quickly reveals his true nature as manipulative, sneaky, and willing to break the rules to win. He takes great pride in his dueling skills but often resorts to trickery, such as planting cards in opponents' decks or discarding Yugi’s Exodia pieces to eliminate a major threat.
Arrogant and boastful, Weevil enjoys taunting his opponents, especially when he believes he has the upper hand. However, when faced with stronger duelists or when his plans backfire, he is quick to panic and resort to desperate measures. His obsession with insects extends beyond his deck, as he admires their adaptability and survival instincts, traits he tries to emulate in dueling.
Despite his intelligence, Weevil’s overconfidence often leads to his downfall, as he underestimates his opponents and overestimates his own strategies. His lack of sportsmanship, combined with his tendency to cheat, results in him being widely disliked by other duelists. Over time, his reputation diminishes, and he becomes bitter toward Yugi and his friends, blaming them for his decline in status.
Biography
Duelist Kingdom
Weevil begins the series as the Duel Monsters Representative of Eastern Japan before becoming the National Champion by defeating Rex Raptor in the championship finals. In the dub, he is referred to as the Regional Champion. However, Rex implies that he let Weevil win, and given Weevil’s reputation, his victory may have involved stacking his deck. After winning the tournament, he is personally invited by Maximillion Pegasus to compete in Duelist Kingdom.
Upon meeting Yugi and his friends, Weevil initially appears humble and respectful, in stark contrast to the brash and arrogant Rex Raptor. However, he soon reveals his true nature as deceitful and underhanded (whereas Rex, ironically, displays better sportsmanship). During the boat ride to the tournament, Weevil approaches Yugi and asks to see his Exodia cards. Once Yugi hands them over, Weevil throws them overboard, forcing Joey Wheeler to jump into the water in a desperate attempt to retrieve them. Laughing, Weevil returns to his cabin, confident that he has eliminated his greatest threat. However, Yugi later defeats him in the first duel of the tournament, making Weevil the first duelist eliminated, along with others who lost in the opening round.
Battle City
Weevil returns in the Battle City arc, where he challenges Joey Wheeler after bribing a child to sneak Parasite Paracide into Joey’s deck. He then uses the card in combination with Insect Barrier to make his monsters nearly invulnerable and summon his ace monsters, Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth and Insect Queen. Despite his cunning strategy, Weevil ultimately loses the duel and is forced to surrender Insect Queen to Joey. Since he loses both of his locator cards, he is eliminated from the Battle City tournament.
He is later seen among the duelists observing the semifinal match between Yugi and Kaiba in Domino City.
Waking the Dragons
In the Waking the Dragons arc, Weevil and Rex have lost much of their former fame after being humiliated in Duelist Kingdom and Battle City. Seeking redemption, they challenge Gurimo to a duel but are soundly defeated, resulting in their souls being taken. They are later freed after Yugi defeats Gurimo.
Determined to regain their former status, Weevil and Rex follow Yugi and his friends. When Yugi’s soul is taken by Rafael after Yami Yugi's loss, they beg Rafael to take them with him. Rafael reluctantly agrees, bringing them to Dartz. Desperate for power, they plead for the chance to settle old scores. Dartz puts them to the test by challenging them to grasp a piece of the Orichalcos Stone, warning that failure would mean losing their souls once again. Both succeed and enhance their decks using cards from Dartz’s vast collection.
Weevil then confronts Yami Yugi in a duel, utilizing The Seal of Orichalcos to strengthen his Insect monsters and employing a variation of his Insect Barrier combo, this time with DNA Surgery to lock down Yami’s strategy. During the duel, Weevil and Rex (who is dueling Joey elsewhere) blame Yugi for their downfall. They reveal that after becoming champions, they were admired and surrounded by fans, even signing autographs—though they often demanded rare cards as payment and looked down on weaker duelists. After their humiliating defeat in Duelist Kingdom, they were ridiculed, lost their status, and were eventually beaten and stripped of the rare cards they had taken.
Weevil taunts Yami Yugi about his failure to protect Yugi’s soul, pushing Yami into a blind rage. Enraged, Yami defeats Weevil in a brutal fashion, using Berserker Soul to unleash a relentless assault even after the duel is officially over. As a result, Weevil’s soul is consumed by the very magic he had wielded. His comatose body is later discovered by Ironheart after the train he had been dueling on derails and falls off a cliff. He is transported to a hospital (though in the dub, Ironheart is unable to find him in the wreckage, creating a plot hole when Weevil is later seen hospitalized).
When Dartz is finally defeated, Weevil’s soul is restored. He wakes up in the hospital in the same room as Rex, and the two leave together.
Grand Championship
Weevil and Rex’s next scheme was to enter the KaibaCorp Grand Championship by disguising themselves as the duelist Fortune Salim. However, their deception was short-lived, as they were quickly defeated by Zigfried von Schroeder and subsequently sent back to Japan by KaibaCorp. (In the dub, their fate after the duel is left ambiguous, though they are briefly seen watching in disgust after Yugi defeats Leon von Schroeder, possibly indicating that they were indeed sent back.)
Dawn of the Duel
Determined to get revenge one last time, Weevil and Rex attempted to steal Yugi's Egyptian God Cards from his house. However, they mistakenly grabbed a bag containing Yugi’s Millennium Items instead. Yugi tried to stop them but was unable to catch up. As they examined their supposed prize, they were ambushed by Yami Bakura, who sent them to the Shadow Realm and reclaimed the Millennium Ring.
During Zorc’s rampage over Ancient Egypt—an event that also disrupted the modern world—Weevil was seen frantically chasing after his deck as it was blown away by the wind. Following Zorc’s defeat, he was briefly seen again.
In the final episode of the Japanese version of the anime, Weevil is shown dueling Rex once more after yet another argument between them.
The Dark Side of Dimensions
Weevil appeared among the crowd at Kaiba Land, during the Duel Disk exhibition Duel. He, along with the rest of the crowd, disappeared thanks to a distorted Aigami, but returned along with everyone else when Aigami was reverted to normal.

Trivia
- In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, a parody of Weevil named Insector Hakata is listed as one of the duelists defeated by Hunter Pace.
- In the Singapore English dub, Weevil speaks in a Peter Lorre-style voice.
- In the Spanish dub, he frequently uses the phrase "despídete de (tus monstruos; tus puntos de vida...)" ("say goodbye to [your monsters; your life points]") when he believes he is about to win, a possible reference to his infamous line when discarding Exodia’s pieces: "despídete de Exodia" ("say goodbye to Exodia").
- His Japanese given name, Haga (羽蛾), means "Winged Moth," referencing his ace monster, Great Moth. It also plays on hakazu (剥がす), meaning "to peel off," a nod to the molting process many insects undergo. His title, Insector, reflects his affinity for Insect-Type monsters.
- His English name, Weevil, refers to a small beetle with an elongated snout, many species of which are agricultural pests—mirroring his bothersome personality. His surname, Underwood, plays on "under the wood," complementing his Insect Deck.
- In the Spanish dub, Weevil is voiced by David Robles (who also voices Duke Devlin). While his official name remains Weevil Underwood, a narrator in the first episode introduces him as "El gusano peleón" ("The fighting worm"), and from then on, characters refer to him simply as "El gusano" ("The worm"). In episode 63, his name is pronounced as Weevil (/wɛbil/).
- Weevil does not appear in the first series anime (Season 0). However, his design and personality are believed to be inspired by Haiyama, a character from a single episode of Season 0, as both wear yellow glasses, have colored hair, and display manipulative tendencies.
