Appearance[edit | edit source]

Spice is a tall, serpentine humanoid with cyan skin, spiky white hair parted down the middle, long pointed ears, and pure red eyes. His attire includes pink upper-body armor with pauldrons, a dark purple leotard featuring a tall open collar and an abdomen window exposing his well-defined abs, and a flowing yellow cape. He completes his look with pink bracers edged in white and matching pink boots with white armored tips.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Spice is composed, diplomatic, and highly intelligent. Unlike his comrades, he often opts for negotiation over immediate violence, extending offers to powerful individuals to join Garlic Jr.'s cause and allowing opportunities to surrender. His calm demeanor rarely falters; even when Piccolo insults Garlic Jr. or mocks his threats, Spice laughs it off and eagerly anticipates the challenge of a fight. However, beneath his refined exterior, Spice is exceptionally cruel, sadistic, and ruthless. He mocks and ridicules Gohan, taking pleasure in the young Saiyan's suffering at the hands of a possessed Piccolo, and relishes using underhanded tactics in battle.

Spice shows a level of respect toward powerful opponents, particularly Piccolo, whom he invites to join Garlic Jr. despite the Namekian's initial hostility. He recognizes Piccolo as a fellow demon and attempts to appeal to his darker instincts to recruit him. Even after Gohan kills Mustard and Salt, Spice acknowledges the boy's potential and extends the same invitation to join Garlic Jr.'s side.

As a tactician, Spice possesses deep knowledge of the Makyo Star and the Black Water Mist. He understands their pivotal roles in empowering Garlic Jr.'s forces and the subservience induced by the mist. Spice is also aware of Piccolo's dark nature and pragmatic enough to see that the Namekian's unbridled hatred for Gohan renders him unpredictable, even as an ally. However, his arrogance in revealing the importance of the Makyo Star unwittingly leads to Garlic Jr.'s ultimate defeat.

In the original Funimation dub, Spice speaks with a high-pitched English accent and a sneering tone, while the remastered version gives him a deeper voice with a regal and authoritative inflection.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Dragon Ball Z: Garlic Jr. Saga[edit | edit source]

After Garlic Jr. unleashes the Black Water Mist, capturing Kami and Mr. Popo, he sends the Spice Boys to Master Roshi's house to confront Piccolo. There, they encounter Gohan, Krillin, and Maron. Enraged upon learning that Garlic Jr. and the Spice Boys were responsible for his mother and friends being possessed, Gohan attacks but is immobilized by their telekinetic powers. Piccolo attempts a stealthy ki blast aimed at Spice, but the latter dodges effortlessly. Piccolo insults Garlic Jr., provoking Vinegar into wanting to fight immediately. However, Spice calms him down and explains how the Makyo Star enabled Garlic Jr.'s escape. He invites Piccolo to join Garlic Jr., but the Namekian declines.

The Spice Boys then infect Piccolo with the Black Water Mist. Vinegar impulsively suggests killing Piccolo, but Spice reminds him that Piccolo is needed to use the Dragon Balls. When Vinegar asks if he can kill Piccolo later, Spice curtly denies it, stating that Piccolo is now an ally.

At the Lookout, Gohan and Krillin discover Piccolo thrashing violently under the mist's influence, forcing Spice to restrain him. Garlic Jr. taunts Gohan, asking about Goku's absence, as Salt and Mustard engage the pair. Salt attacks Gohan, while Mustard targets Krillin. Garlic Jr., Spice, and Vinegar watch the battles unfold. Krillin's defeat pushes Gohan to unleash his latent power, resulting in him killing both Salt and Mustard.

Piccolo breaks free and attacks Gohan, ignoring Spice's orders to stand down. Spice and Vinegar attempt to join the fight but are interrupted by Piccolo's continued assault. After biting and infecting Krillin, Piccolo and Krillin corner Gohan. Just as Piccolo appears ready to kill Gohan, he reveals he was only pretending to be infected, snatching the vials containing Kami and Popo. He tosses them to Krillin, who was also feigning infection, and the duo releases Kami and Mr. Popo.

As Kami and Mr. Popo leave to spread the Sacred Water, Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo face off against Garlic Jr., Spice, and Vinegar. Spice battles Gohan, demonstrating an even match until he traps the young Saiyan with his Kaminobashiwaza. Gohan escapes with an energy wave and aids Krillin, who struggles against Vinegar. After blasting Vinegar away, Gohan is ambushed by Spice but saved by Krillin, who headbutts Spice in the stomach. Gohan then uppercuts Spice into a spike, seemingly killing him. However, like Vinegar, Spice is revived when Garlic Jr. activates the Makyo Star.

Empowered by the Makyo Star, Spice transforms, growing larger, stronger, and more ferocious. He resumes his fight with Gohan, while Vinegar takes on Krillin. When an injured Krillin falls off the Lookout, Gohan tries to save him but is blocked by Spice and Vinegar. Witnessing his friend's peril unleashes Gohan's fury, awakening his latent power. Gohan eradicates Spice and Vinegar with a devastating Double Masenko, finally ending their threat.

Attacks and Techniques[edit | edit source]

Flight – The ability to fly by utilizing ki energy.

Telekinesis – A mental technique enabling the user to manipulate objects or people with their mind.

Sugar Ignition – A powerful energy attack where Spice generates two energy balls, one in each hand, and fires them simultaneously. The two spheres combine mid-flight to create a single, larger, more destructive energy ball.

Hair Manipulation – A unique ability where the user extends their hair to extreme lengths, controlling it like tendrils to grab, strangle, or immobilize their opponent.

Energy Web – The user releases a web-like ki attack designed to ensnare the opponent. The web tightens as the victim struggles, rendering them immobile.

Half-Nelson – A grappling move where the user places their arms over their opponent’s shoulders and under their armpits, locking their hands behind the neck to restrict movement.

Regeneration – When the Makyo Star reaches its closest point to Earth, its energy enables Spice to recover completely from life-threatening injuries, such as a fatal stab wound to his stomach.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Like Mustard and Salt, Spice and Vinegar have a cooperative attack involving energy orbs. However, they were unable to execute this technique due to Piccolo's intervention.
  • The shape of the spike Gohan uses to impale Spice differs between the uncut and edited dubs. In the uncut version, the spike is longer and more serrated, while in the edited dub, it appears shorter and stubbier.
  • Spice's Japanese name, "Gasshu," is an anagram of the Japanese pronunciation of the word "sugar."
