Wither Storm
The Wither Storm, also known as the Witherstorm, is a massive, advanced wither-like entity that serves as the primary antagonist of the first four episodes of Minecraft: Story Mode Season 1. It was created by Ivor using a command block, three wither skeleton skulls, and soul sand. Originally intended as a means of proving a point to the former Order of the Stone, the creature quickly spiraled out of control. Programmed to follow Gabriel the Warrior’s amulet, the Wither Storm began relentlessly pursuing it, annihilating anything in its path. Jesse’s gang ultimately destroyed the Wither Storm in the climactic finale of Episode 4, “A Block and a Hard Place.”

Appearance
At its inception, the Wither Storm resembled a standard Wither, albeit with a command block embedded in its ribcage. However, as it began to consume blocks from its environment, it rapidly mutated into a towering, obsidian-hued monstrosity. The final form bore three heads, each featuring a glowing purple eye and formidable mandibles. Its body was supported by enormous, whip-like tentacles, and the blocks it absorbed transformed into ash-like matter that was drawn into its form. Inside, the blocks and mobs it had consumed were reconstituted in eerie, purple-and-gray variants.
While it retained the general structure of a normal Wither, the Wither Storm also exhibited traits reminiscent of Endermen. This could be attributed to the command block’s reality-altering power, possibly linked to the End dimension—either through its role in erasing the Ender Dragon or mimicking End-related corruption. Notable similarities include the purple hue of its tractor beam and absorbed materials, the ability to manipulate blocks without breaking them (akin to Endermen), and the unsettling aura of corruption. Visually, the Wither Storm also shares design cues with the Heart of Ender from Minecraft Dungeons, which was developed after Story Mode and may have drawn inspiration from it.
At the end of Episode 3, “The Last Place You Look,” the Wither Storm is split into three separate entities. Each initially possesses a single head, but by Episode 4, “A Block and a Hard Place,” they evolve—two of them growing additional heads. The central and largest of the three retains the embedded command block and functions as the core of the Wither Storm hive.
Personality
While not sentient in a traditional sense, the Wither Storm displayed a chilling and steadily evolving intelligence that separated it from the typical Wither mob. Initially, it acted purely on programming—driven by the command block to follow and retrieve Gabriel’s amulet. However, as it consumed more blocks, entities, and even people, its behavior began to shift, hinting at an adaptive and learning mind.
Early in its existence, the Wither Storm functioned like a force of nature—mechanical, relentless, and emotionless. It showed no signs of reasoning or malice, simply executing its directive without deviation. But as the storm grew and evolved, it began to act with greater precision and awareness. It demonstrated the ability to anticipate movements, identify threats, and even prioritize targets. These actions suggest it developed a form of strategic reasoning as its power increased.
The Storm also showed an unsettling tendency to focus on individuals who posed a threat to its existence—particularly Jesse and their allies. This implies it recognized specific enemies and reacted to them with targeted aggression, as opposed to indiscriminate destruction. It would later deploy tentacles to pursue escaping foes, trap survivors, or absorb crucial items—all signs of calculated behavior.
Despite its lack of speech or expression, the Wither Storm projected a presence of overwhelming dominance. It did not "feel" emotions like anger, fear, or satisfaction, but its growing pursuit of power and expansion made it feel almost hungry, as if driven by a primal desire to consume and assimilate all matter around it.
In its final form, the Wither Storm acted almost like a hive mind—splitting into three entities, yet operating with a singular goal. The intelligence seemed to be centralized in the core Storm with the command block, but the coordination between the Storm fragments hinted at an underlying link—perhaps a shared awareness.
Ultimately, the Wither Storm was less a creature with personality and more a corrupted manifestation of control, growth, and escalation—an entity that started as a tool of exposure and ended as an unstoppable nightmare.
Biography
The Wither Storm was a powerful and catastrophic creature created by Ivor, a former member of the Order of the Stone. Intended as a demonstration to expose the Order’s lies, Ivor used a command block in combination with three wither skeleton skulls and soul sand to construct a modified version of the traditional Wither. However, the result far exceeded expectations—and quickly became an uncontrollable force of destruction.
Programmed to follow Gabriel the Warrior’s amulet, the Wither Storm relentlessly pursued it across the world, absorbing terrain, structures, and living creatures in its path. Its growth was fueled by the blocks and entities it consumed, allowing it to rapidly evolve into a colossal monstrosity. The threat it posed forced the fractured Order to reunite under Jesse’s leadership to stop it.
Throughout Episodes 1 to 4 of Minecraft: Story Mode, the Wither Storm terrorized the world—growing more intelligent and dangerous with each passing encounter. At first, it resembled a normal Wither with a command block lodged in its chest. However, as it absorbed more material, it transformed into a towering, tentacled giant with three menacing heads and a glowing purple tractor beam. It gained the ability to pull in entire structures, convert them into ash-like matter, and reassemble them within itself.
In Episode 3, “The Last Place You Look,” the Wither Storm was split into three separate entities—each with a single head. By Episode 4, “A Block and a Hard Place,” the smaller Storms developed into fully-formed threats of their own, while the central one, still housing the command block, remained the most dangerous. Jesse and their team ultimately defeated the Wither Storm in the finale of Episode 4 using the enchanted Command Block weapon and a daring final assault.
Though its reign of terror was brief, the Wither Storm left a lasting impact on the world—and on those who survived it.
Powers and Statistics
Tier: At least 8-B, likely 5-C, possibly High 3-A
Powers and Abilities: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Flight, Telekinesis (Manipulates dis-attached blocks from its body to swirl around it like a tornado to cause confusion and a hard time navigating to a person who is stuck in its wake), Likely all the abilities from a Command Block, Matter Manipulation (Absorbs Organic Matter and blocks to grow larger), Regeneration (Likely Low-High via Matter Manipulation), Death Manipulation via Wither Sickness, Memory Manipulation (People who survive being eaten by a Wither Storm may suffer from amnesia), Fire Manipulation, Darkness Manipulation (Turns the sky dark wherever it goes just like a common wither), Body Control (It can create tentacles out of the matter it absorbs and control the blocks inside its body) and Duplication (If its heads are broken off its body but the Command Block is intact, each head turns into a separate Wither Storm)
Attack Potency: At least City Block level (Destroyed Redstonia/Boomtown in a short time. Vastly superior to a regular Wither, is capable of destroying obsidian which requires an explosion this powerful to destroy), likely Moon level (Powered by and absorbed a Command Block), possibly High Universe level (Was going to absorb and eat all of the Minecraft world, which has been constantly referred to as infinite. Made the sky of the whole world dark)
Speed: Athletic Human with Subsonic combat and reaction speed (Comparable to the original Wither)
Lifting Strength: Unknown
Striking Strength: At least City Block level
Durability: At least City Block level (Can take the recoil of its strikes. Much more durable than the Wither), likely Moon level, possibly High Universe level for the Command Block (Hinted that only another Command Block or something with equal strength to it could destroy it, almost impossible to break)
Stamina: Infinite (Powered by the Command Block)
Range: Kilometers (Tractor Beams can reach far distances)
Standard Equipment: None notable
Intelligence: Mindless (The Command Block powers the Wither to only follow whoever holds the Order of the Stone's Amulet)
Weaknesses: Can be destroyed if the Command Block is tampered with, disabled, or otherwise stopped by an equal force, due to the fact the Command Block is the most indestructible block to any normal tool or weapon in the game. As well as Endermen, as they often pick up or move blocks and the Wither Storm's composition is mainly flesh-like blocks, Endermen can slow down the storm by ripping off parts of its body
- Destroyed several towns easily, was an extreme threat to the whole Minecraft world.
Notable Attacks/Techniques:
- Tractor Beams: A beam capable of pulling in beings and blocks into itself, absorbing them and causing it to grow.
- Wither Sickness: When living beings fight it for a prolonged period of time, they may suffer this Wither sickness, capable of slowly wearing out their strength.
- Regeneration: If the main body of the Wither Storm is destroyed, the Command Block will reassemble the surrounding matter into itself, rebuilding the Wither Storm, if blown up to pieces it can split into multiple beings
Trivia
- The Wither Storm is the first major antagonist in Minecraft: Story Mode, and notably the first to be artificially created by a person—specifically, Ivor.
- PAMA is the second antagonist known to be man-made. However, it’s possible PAMA was created earlier chronologically, depending on the timeline.
- It is also the first non-human major antagonist in the series, with PAMA once again being the second.
- Several named characters can be found as withered citizens trapped inside the Wither Storm, including Jens, Lydia, Otis, Owen, Schoolboy, and Reuben (in human form).
- The Wither Storm cannot be created in standard Minecraft gameplay, though all its core components—soul sand, wither skeleton skulls, and a command block—exist in-game.
- The names “Wither Storm” and “Witherstorm” are used interchangeably in Story Mode. Episodes 1 and 2 use the separated form (“Wither Storm”), while episodes 3 through 5 use the combined form (“Witherstorm”).
- When the Wither Storm's central head undergoes a mutation, its eye changes to cyan, differing from the usual purple hue seen elsewhere on the creature.
- At the end of Episode 1, the Wither Storm can be seen floating eerily in the sky, almost as if buoyant—like a massive object suspended in water.
- In Hero in Residence, several posters around Beacontown depict the Wither Storm, suggesting its lasting impact on the world and its people.
- It is the first antagonist to play a major role across multiple episodes, with Romeo (the Admin) being the only other to do so.
- The Wither Storm is also the first primary villain in the series to never speak, making it a uniquely silent but terrifying force.
