Monster Carrot

Monster Carrot (兎人参化 Toninjinka, lit. "Rabbit Who Turns People into Carrots") is a minor antagonist in the Dragon Ball manga and anime. He is an anthropomorphic rabbit and the leader of the Rabbit Mob, a gang that once controlled a remote village in the Diablo Desert. Monster Carrot's subordinates are required to wear fake rabbit ears, a practice he even enforces on Bulma when he initially mistakes her for a gangster. Before their downfall at Goku's hands, the Rabbit Mob terrorized the local populace with their peculiar powers.

Appearance

Monster Carrot is an anthropomorphic rabbit who sports large black sunglasses and a distinctive uniform featuring a kanji patch on the chest that translates to "rabbit."

Personality

Monster Carrot is a cunning con artist and mob boss. He uses his unique ability to transform people into carrots to intimidate and manipulate others, showing no remorse for his actions, including eating his victims after transformation. Despite his threatening powers, Monster Carrot is ultimately a coward who prefers to flee rather than engage in direct combat when faced with a formidable opponent.

Emperor Pilaf Saga

When two Rabbit Mob henchmen are defeated by Goku, they call for reinforcements, prompting Monster Carrot to arrive on the scene in person. Despite having an opportunity to escape, Goku and Bulma remain to confront the feared mob leader. Upon his arrival, Monster Carrot greets Bulma with a handshake, which she rejects and slaps away. Laughing, he declares, "You touched me," and uses his powers to transform Bulma into a carrot with a burst of smoke.

Goku hesitates to attack, worried that harm might come to the transformed Bulma. However, Yamcha and Puar intervene, stealing the carrot-Bulma from Monster Carrot. With his leverage lost, Monster Carrot is easily defeated by Goku and forced to restore Bulma to her human form. As punishment, Goku binds Monster Carrot and his gang and takes them to the Moon. There, they are ordered to make treats for children as a reference to the Japanese folktale The Rabbit in the Moon. Goku promises to retrieve them after a year of good behavior.

Tournament Saga

Monster Carrot's stay on the Moon is abruptly ended when Master Roshi destroys it during the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament to prevent Goku from transforming into a Great Ape. In the Dragon Ball: Adventure Special, Akira Toriyama mentions that Monster Carrot and his followers were left drifting in space after the Moon's destruction.

In an additional panel, Monster Carrot and his gang are seen watching Merus fly past the Moon, indicating they somehow returned to Earth's Moon after its restoration. For reasons unknown, they continue to make treats on the Moon, possibly having embraced their new lifestyle.

Attacks and Techniques

Magic Touch – Monster Carrot's signature ability, allowing him to transform any living being into a carrot by simply touching them with his hands.

Magic Materialization – In Dragon Ball: Origins, Monster Carrot can create explosive carrots to throw at his opponents. He can also use this ability to recreate his car, adding a magical touch to his tactics.

Explosive Carrots – Monster Carrot hurls explosive carrots at his enemies, using them as a weapon in both Dragon Ball: Origins and Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans.

Superhuman Jump – Monster Carrot possesses enhanced jumping abilities, which he uses in the anime to dodge Goku's Power Pole and attempt to touch Puar, who had transformed into a bird and carried away carrot-Bulma. This power likely references his rabbit-like nature.

Vacuum Survival – Monster Carrot and his two henchmen are capable of surviving in the vacuum of space. This is explained as a gag from the time Dragon Ball was still a comedic manga, allowing them to float in space after the Moon was destroyed. The presence of oxygen on the Earth's Moon in Universe 7 remains unclear, but their ability to breathe in space is a key part of their survival.

Self-Sustenance – Monster Carrot and his gang can survive without food or water for extended periods, as evidenced by their continued existence while floating in space after the Moon's destruction. This ability is also a result of the gag nature of Dragon Ball at the time of their appearance.

Hikou – In Dokkan Battle, Monster Carrot uses a jetpack to fly, giving him an added aerial advantage in battle.

Trivia

• Monster Carrot's ability to turn people into carrots is similar to the later villain Majin Buu, who can turn individuals into various foods (or clay) with his Transfiguration Beam.
• It is an ironic coincidence that Monster Carrot threatened to turn Goku into a carrot, considering Goku's Saiyan name, "Kakarot," is a pun on the word "carrot."
• It remains unclear if there is a limit to Monster Carrot's powers, or if they fail against enemies whose power vastly exceeds his own, much like how Chiaotzu's telekinetic abilities were ineffective against the much stronger Nappa. There may also be individuals so powerful that they cannot be transfigured, such as Vegito, who retained his strength even after being turned into candy by Buu.
