Concept and Creation

Tagoma’s initial design by Yamamuro, as depicted in the storyboards for Resurrection 'F', was vastly different from his final appearance, which was refined by Akira Toriyama. Originally envisioned as a humanoid character, his design evolved significantly during production.

In the film's original storyboard, Tagoma was intended to survive being blown out of the spaceship by Frieza, only to return later, engage Piccolo in battle, and ultimately be defeated by Gohan. However, this plotline was revised during the final stages of production, and Tagoma was killed early in the film, with Shisami assuming his role in the subsequent battle. Interestingly, the anime adaptation of Dragon Ball Super retains elements of the original concept, portraying Tagoma as surviving Frieza’s attack, growing stronger, and participating in the New Frieza Army’s assault on Earth.

Appearance

Tagoma is a tall, purple-grey humanoid alien with a sleek appearance. He dons a new type of Battle Armor featuring black, green, and red accents, complemented by black armbands around his wrists. His scouter, resembling a visor, covers both his eyes, enhancing his combat efficiency.

Personality

Tagoma is depicted as a loyal and competent member of Frieza's army. He is patient, analytical, and exhibits a power level higher than most of his peers. Despite his loyalty, Tagoma harbors doubts about Frieza’s revival, questioning the necessity of resurrecting the tyrant to rebuild their fallen empire. He pragmatically suggests focusing on reconstruction rather than confronting the powerful Saiyans, a suggestion that leads to his death in the film and torture in the anime.

After undergoing training with Frieza in Dragon Ball Super, Tagoma’s personality shifts, adopting traits reminiscent of the tyrant himself. He becomes sadistic, merciless, and exudes a menacing demeanor, marked by malicious laughter when preparing to battle the Z Fighters. His transformation includes a notable lack of empathy, as seen when he kills Shisami in an attempt to eliminate Gohan and intimidates Sorbet, whom he had previously respected. Overconfident in his newfound strength, Tagoma grows arrogant, regarding himself as the perfect warrior to serve Frieza and dismissing his former, cautious self as weak.

Background

In the anime, Tagoma recalls encountering Frieza once in the past, observing him in conversation with Dodoria and Captain Ginyu. This memory resurfaces as Tagoma assists Sorbet in reviving Frieza.

Dragon Ball Super

God of Destruction Beerus Saga

In the manga, Tagoma reports to Sorbet on Planet Frieza 17 that the second strongest ship in the Frieza Force was destroyed by an unidentified force. This event prompts Tagoma and Sorbet to begin their search for the Dragon Balls to revive Frieza.

Golden Frieza Saga

Tagoma serves as one of Sorbet's most trusted soldiers, rivaling the strength of Zarbon and Dodoria. Following years of turmoil after Frieza's death, Sorbet and Tagoma come to Earth to gather the Dragon Balls, hoping to resurrect their leader and restore the empire. Despite Sorbet's preference for Tagoma, a rivalry with the jealous Shisami exists, though Sorbet values Tagoma's competence and reliability.

When the Frieza Army fails to suppress an uprising on Planet Frieza 448, Sorbet determines that only Frieza's revival can stabilize the fractured empire. Tagoma joins Sorbet on a mission to Earth, though he voices concerns about resurrecting Frieza, describing him as a malevolent dictator whose revival might not be worth the risks. Sorbet reluctantly agrees with Tagoma's concerns but insists they have no other choice.

The duo discovers the Pilaf Gang collecting Dragon Balls and intercepts them to secure the final ball. Tagoma retrieves it from the ocean and assists in summoning Shenron. When Shenron reveals he cannot fully restore Frieza due to his fragmented state, Tagoma suggests using their advanced recovery chambers. After being revived and reconstructed, Frieza remembers little about his subordinates, but Tagoma advises focusing on rebuilding the empire rather than pursuing revenge on the Saiyans. This suggestion infuriates Frieza, who blasts Tagoma with Death Beams, leaving him gravely injured.

Frieza later selects Tagoma as his training partner, subjecting him to near-death experiences that he survives through regeneration. Over four months, both Tagoma and Frieza grow significantly stronger. Upon completing their training, Tagoma accompanies Frieza to Earth alongside their army.

During the invasion, Tagoma's cold and ruthless demeanor becomes evident. After Shisami's defeat by Gohan, Tagoma eliminates him with a ki blast in an attempt to strike Gohan. Despite Sorbet's reprimand, Tagoma intimidates his superior and declares his transformation into a "perfect warrior." He proposes a deal with Frieza: if he eradicates the resistance, he will become the commander of the army and receive a planet of his choice, to which Frieza agrees.

Tagoma engages the Z Fighters, demonstrating his immense power and resilience, claiming his "body of steel" is impervious to refined attacks. He overpowers Piccolo and resists combined efforts from the others. However, his dominance is interrupted when Gotenks headbutts him in the crotch, leaving him temporarily incapacitated.

As Frieza orders him to continue, the frog-turned-Ginyu takes advantage of the moment and performs the Body Change technique, swapping bodies with Tagoma. Trapped in the body of a frog, Tagoma's fate remains unknown after Frieza eradicates the remnants of his army.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes

Supreme Kai of Time Saga

Tagoma participates as a competitor in the Super Space-Time Tournament, alongside Mecha Frieza, Zarbon, Dodoria, Shisami, Cui, and Sorbet. Despite their efforts, Tagoma's team fails to advance to the second round, resulting in both their erasure and the destruction of their space-time.

Demon Invader Saga

In one particular space-time, Tagoma is absorbed by Majin Ozotto, marking a significant deviation from his usual fate.

Film Appearances

Resurrection 'F'

Tagoma serves as Sorbet's right-hand man in the Galactic Frieza Army and plays a key role in the operation to resurrect Frieza. Traveling to Earth with Sorbet, Tagoma retrieves the final Dragon Ball from the ocean after the Pilaf Gang gathers the first six. With all seven Dragon Balls in their possession, Sorbet summons Shenron and successfully revives Frieza.

Tagoma assists in reassembling Frieza's fragmented body and emphasizes the urgency of leaving Earth to avoid encountering the Saiyans. However, when he suggests that Frieza ignore the Super Saiyans and focus on rebuilding his empire, his remark enrages Frieza. The tyrant retaliates by blasting Tagoma into outer space, leaving him gravely injured and calling out for Sorbet's aid. Sorbet is deeply distressed by Tagoma's apparent demise, mourning the loss of his trusted ally.

• Tagoma Shot: A powerful energy sphere, featured as his Super Attack in Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle.
• Double Axe Handle: A strong physical attack where Tagoma raises both fists and strikes down on his opponent. He attempts this on Piccolo but is intercepted by Gohan.
• Body of Steel (鋼の体 Hagane no Karada):
  • Tagoma’s body becomes incredibly durable due to enduring four months of harsh training as Frieza's sparring partner. His resilience allows him to withstand powerful attacks from Piccolo and base-form Gohan without injury, despite their comparable power levels.
  • However, his durability is not absolute. A headbutt to the crotch by Gotenks effectively incapacitated him, showcasing a key vulnerability.

Trivia

• Tagoma's name is an anagram of the Japanese word for "egg" (tamago).
• In the manga, Tagoma's scouter remains intact despite Frieza's overwhelming power level. However, in the movie and anime, his scouter shatters, leaving him scouter-less during his final moments.
• Akira Toriyama, in an interview, revealed that dual-eye Scouters exist in the Dragon Ball universe. Tagoma is the first character to showcase this upgraded version.
• An unnamed soldier resembling Yamamuro's initial design for Tagoma appears in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ - Special One Shot. This character is distinct from the finalized Tagoma and is defeated by Master Roshi's MAX Power Kamehameha.
