Appearance[edit | edit source]
West Kai is notably short, standing at about half the height of King Kai. Unlike the other Kais, who wear sunglasses, West Kai is distinguished by his blue monocle.
Personality[edit | edit source]
West Kai is arrogant, rude, and often condescending. He has a habit of making excuses when he loses, no matter how absurd, and struggles to accept defeat gracefully. His interactions with the other Kais are often marked by immature bickering, though they come together in times of universal crises. He particularly enjoys antagonizing King Kai, his primary rival, and takes an immediate dislike to Goku, King Kai's favored student.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Background[edit | edit source]
West Kai played a key role in training his warriors, including Pikkon, whom he taught the Thunder Flash Attack and its accompanying stance to amplify the technique. In Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, King Kai reveals that West Kai, along with the other Kais, helped seal the Galaxy Soldiers and their leader, Bojack, inside a star to end their destructive rampage.
Dragon Ball Z – Majin Buu Saga[edit | edit source]
West Kai frequently quarrels with the other Kais, particularly King Kai, often mocking him for being deceased. During the Other World Tournament, he makes a wager with North Kai: if Pikkon defeats Goku, King Kai must become his servant; if Goku wins, West Kai must relinquish his planet to King Kai.
West Kai’s team of fighters is formidable, with Pikkon being his strongest and most accomplished warrior. Other fighters under his command include Tapkar and Maraikoh. Despite his confidence, West Kai’s impatience with his fighters is evident, as seen when Pikkon uses the Thunder Flash Attack recklessly, prompting West Kai to grumble about how "kids these days" are overly focused on flashy explosions.
Later, West Kai encounters Kid Buu. Initially failing to recognize the monstrous Majin, he recalls Buu’s destructive nature after King Kai reminds him. While Goku battles Buu, West Kai taunts Pikkon with the reality that Buu’s power far surpasses his, much to Pikkon’s frustration.
Dragon Ball GT – Shadow Dragon Saga[edit | edit source]
Years later, during the Shadow Dragon Saga in Dragon Ball GT, West Kai is seen lounging on a deck chair on Grand Kai's Planet. When Goku asks King Kai to rally the universe for energy to form the Super Ultra Spirit Bomb, West Kai is briefly shown among the Kais responding to the call.
Film Appearance – Fusion Reborn[edit | edit source]
West Kai appears in Fusion Reborn, alongside East Kai, South Kai, Grand Kai, and Pikkon. According to Grand Kai, the four Kais typically only cooperate during major crises, such as the one caused by Janemba.
Attacks and Techniques[edit | edit source]
- Flight: West Kai can fly using his ki, a common ability among Kais and powerful beings.
- Telepathy: Like his rival North Kai, West Kai can communicate telepathically and enable others to do the same by having them place their hand on his back.
- Far-Seeing Arts: As the Kai of the West Area, he can observe events occurring within his domain and in the lower realms.
- Sealing Spell: In Bojack Unbound, it is revealed that West Kai, alongside the other Kais, possesses the ability to seal immensely powerful beings, such as the Galaxy Soldiers, inside a star. However, the seal was broken following King Kai's death during the Cell Games.
- Flawless Stance: A specialized fighting stance taught by West Kai to his student Pikkon. The user sways their arms around their body, generating a blue flame-like aura. This stance enhances the power and reduces the ki cost of the Thunder Flash Attack when used beforehand. Though unnamed in the anime, it was later officially named in Dragon Ball Legends, where it is featured as the Special Quirk Skill Arts for Pikkon's Agile Style transformation. It remains unclear if West Kai can perform this stance himself or if, like King Kai's Kaio-ken and Spirit Bomb, he merely invented it for others.
- Thunder Flash Attack: An Ultimate Attack that West Kai taught to Pikkon. Whether West Kai himself can use this technique or only conceptualized it remains unknown, similar to his relationship with the Flawless Stance.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- West Kai is one of the few characters in Dragon Ball Z who does not die. However, in the episode "True Saiyans Fight Alone," where Kid Buu prepares to destroy the Other World, West Kai is briefly seen with a halo, despite being alive.
- Unlike North Kai and South Kai, West Kai is never mentioned in the Dragon Ball manga and exists solely in the anime.
- In Dragon Ball Heroes and Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission, Super Pikkon is depicted wearing attire similar to West Kai’s.
- The Flawless Stance is often viewed as West Kai's counterpart to North Kai's Kaio-ken, as both techniques create flame-like auras (blue for Flawless Stance, red for Kaio-ken). Similarly, the Thunder Flash Attack is considered West Kai's equivalent to North Kai's Spirit Bomb, as both techniques were developed by their respective Kais and passed down to their strongest students (Pikkon for West Kai, Goku for North Kai).
