Appearance

The T-850's flesh covering is designed for easier removal compared to the T-800, simplifying internal repairs. Unlike the T-800, which requires incisions to access its cranial CPU port, the T-850 features an integrated maintenance system. A release point beneath the skin on the right side of its neck, when pressed, causes the head to slacken onto its right cheek. This exposes seams following the unit's hairline from the neck’s base, behind the ears, to the temples. The skin can then be easily peeled back, revealing the metal skull and its compact access port.[1]

Additionally, a T-850's damaged skin and flesh can partially regenerate over its endoskeleton, improving its ability to maintain infiltration.[1]

The T-850 is equipped with advanced action network circuits that activate when engaged in combat. These function as the cybernetic equivalent of adrenaline, supercharging its systems to enhance combat efficiency.

[1]This upgrade enables the T-850 to challenge more advanced models such as the T-900, T-950, and T-X.

The T-850 Endoskeleton is made of titanium alloy.[1]

As an enhanced version of the T-800, the T-850’s endoskeleton offers greater durability against plasma weaponry. It can withstand direct hits from a T-X’s plasma cannon without being destroyed, though such impacts are powerful enough to knock it offline and damage its internal components.

Unlike the T-800, which relies on a nuclear-powered Iridium fuel cell in the Original timeline, the T-850 is powered by two hydrogen fuel cells. Even if one cell is lost, the unit can continue operating at near-full efficiency. The T-850 can also function for a limited time on stored energy alone, allowing for the temporary removal of both fuel cells. However, its exact operational duration without an active fuel source remains undetermined, as it depends on power consumption needs following cell removal.

Personality

While physically resembling the T-800, the T-850 exhibits several key differences. It appears slightly more aged than its predecessors and possesses significantly less humor than the T-800 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day (nicknamed "Uncle Bob"). At times, it even appears to assert itself, such as when correcting John’s terminology by stating it is a "cybernetic organism," not merely a "robot."

Despite being originally programmed to follow Kate’s orders, the T-850 was capable of overriding its default instructions, as demonstrated when it forcibly locked Kate in the back of her veterinary truck against her will. It also acknowledges that one of its subroutines deals with human psychology, enabling it to form a limited emotional connection with John. This is particularly evident when it struggles against the T-X’s attempt to reprogram its systems and later when it reassures John that they will "meet again.

The Series 850 Terminator cannot self-terminate as an independent action unrelated to mission objectives. However, it can initiate a full system shutdown and reboot from scratch, effectively overriding any unauthorized modifications to its programming.[5]

Additional fail-safes enhance its reliability and longevity. The T-850 incorporates built-in safety redundancies and can reroute delicate control circuits to protected areas in response to massive electrical shocks, increasing its resilience in combat and hazardous environments.

The T-850 is programmed with advanced subroutines in psychology, human emotions, and socio-ecological interactions, making it a significant improvement over the T-800 Series. These enhancements enable it to better understand human behavior, improving its infiltration capabilities and making it a more effective assassin.

Like its predecessor, the Series 850 Terminator possesses extensive data files. Among these are a catalog of over 1,000 emotional variables that influence human behavior;

[1]zoological data covering all recorded animal species, allowing it to identify any creature and perfectly mimic its vocalizations using its voice processing unit; and a database of popular music and artists from the 20th and early 21st centuries, though the purpose of this inclusion remains unclear.

The T-850 continuously evaluates both stored and newly acquired data, using its advanced processing capabilities to predict enemy movements and assign probability values to various scenarios. This allows it to anticipate and counter threats, staying one or two steps ahead in combat situations.

Outfitted with a sophisticated array of sensors, the T-850 can analyze its surroundings in real-time, even generating a detailed 3D model of its environment. It is capable of detecting infrared signatures, radar and optical emissions, electromagnetic fields, heat sources, electronic signals, high-frequency cell phone transmissions, and directed sound waves, granting it exceptional situational awareness and tracking capabilities.[3]

Biography

Future War in Rise of the Machines (Novel)

In 2029 of Kyla’s World, after learning that Skynet had developed a new type of Terminator, John Connor decided to send a T-850 to the past. Alongside Kate Connor, he led a team to the Cyber Research Systems facility in the ruins of Edwards Air Force Base. There, they activated and programmed the T-850 before sending it to 2003 via the Continuum Transporter.

Future War in Rise of the Machines (Video Game)

In 2032 of the Rise of the Machines timeline, this T-850 was initially deployed by Skynet to terminate John Connor. It fought its way to the Resistance Headquarters, known as Home Plate, successfully infiltrating the facility and assassinating John Connor by ambushing him from behind.

Later, the T-850 was captured and reprogrammed by General Kate Connor and her team. Upon rebooting, it found Home Plate under heavy attack by Skynet forces and saved Kate from a T-900 strike team. The Terminator was then dispatched to battle its way to Skynet’s control hub, where it assisted Kate’s Tech-Com forces in securing the facility before taking control of the Time Displacement Chamber. Kate then operated the time machine, sending the T-850 to 2004.

2003

After emerging from a time bubble in Joshua Tree, California, the T-850 entered the Desert Star strip club, acquiring clothing from a male stripper after finding the others unsuitable. It then stole a truck, where it also found a pair of sunglasses.

Tracking John Connor to a veterinary clinic where Kate Brewster worked, the Terminator forcibly took them both in the back of Kate’s Toyota Tundra to escape the T-X, a new and highly advanced Terminator. While driving, John asked if it had memories of "Uncle Bob," the T-800 from 1995. The T-850 clarified that it was a different Model 101 unit and informed John that, although he had destroyed Cyberdyne, Judgment Day was merely postponed, not prevented. It also warned that the T-X had been designed to terminate John’s future lieutenants and was superior to previous Terminators, capable of overpowering them.

At Sarah Connor’s grave, the T-850 retrieved a weapons cache hidden inside her coffin. When police arrived, it helped John and Kate escape but soon confronted the T-X again. Later, at a campsite, it revealed that Robert Brewster, Kate’s father, was one of the T-X’s secondary targets. Unlike the T-800 from John’s childhood, this unit followed Kate’s commands rather than John's, explaining that it had been sent by Kate because John had been killed by this very Terminator in 2032 before it was captured and reprogrammed by the Resistance. Skynet had chosen this model for the assassination due to John’s emotional attachment to its appearance.

At the Cyber Research Systems facility, the Terminator fought against multiple T-1 Battlefield Robots before engaging the T-X. Despite its strength, it was ultimately overpowered, sustaining severe damage, including partial decapitation. The T-X then infected the T-850 with a Nanotechnological Transjector, partially reprogramming it to turn against John. However, when ordered to kill John, the Terminator resisted its corrupted programming and forcefully shut itself down to prevent the assassination.

After rebooting and regaining control, the T-850 pursued John and Kate to Crystal Peak, using a helicopter to follow them. Crashing the aircraft into the T-X, it managed to severely damage its opponent’s legs and outer sheath, buying John and Kate enough time to reach the underground bunker and survive the impending nuclear war.

As the crippled T-X attempted to crawl after them, the T-850 sacrificed itself by ramming its last hydrogen fuel cell into the T-X’s mouth, triggering a massive explosion. In its final moments, the Terminator declared, "You are terminated."

Deviating Timelines

Terminator 3: The Redemption

After successfully terminating John Connor, the T-850 went on a rampage at Home Plate before being taken down by General Kate Connor and her team using electrical projectiles that overloaded its system. Once incapacitated, it was reprogrammed by Daniel, who discovered internal damage and attempted to repair it. Kate, upon learning of the machine’s reactivation, rushed into the lab intending to destroy it. However, Daniel convinced her that the Terminator had been successfully reprogrammed and was now an ally of the Resistance.

Shortly after rebooting, Skynet became aware of the T-850’s reprogramming and launched an attack on Home Plate using a squad of Hunter-Killers. The T-850 fought off the threat before setting out toward the Continuum Transporter. Along the way, it aided the Resistance in their battle against Skynet’s forces and successfully destroyed an FK Command unit.

Using the Continuum Transporter, the T-850 arrived in 2003, where it rescued John Connor and Kate Brewster. After evading the T-X at the cemetery, it mentioned Crystal Peak as a possible refuge for the impending Judgment Day. The group traveled to the Cyber Research Systems facility at Edwards Air Force Base to acquire a plane that could transport them the 50 miles to their destination. However, during the battle at Cyber Research Systems, the T-850 was thrown into a prototype Continuum Transporter, which unexpectedly sent it into an alternate future—one where the T-X had successfully completed its mission and humanity had been wiped out.

In this devastated future, the T-850 located another time machine and returned to the present, where it resumed its mission to protect John and Kate.

Final Battle at Crystal Peak

At the Crystal Peak installation, the T-850 sacrificed itself by detonating its hydrogen fuel cell inside the T-X, destroying both itself and its opponent. However, John managed to retrieve its CPU before the explosion. Years later, during the Future War, John inserted the salvaged CPU into an FK Reaper, reviving the T-850 in a new body. Now fully operational, the Terminator continued to fight alongside the Resistance.

Alternate Futures

Terminator Salvation: The Final Battle

In 2029, an equivalent of the T-850 existed in the Terminator Salvation timeline. During a conflict with Thomas Parnell, this unit was activated as Parnell was under attack by a Terminator synchronizing with John Connor. Assigned a mission to terminate Connor, the Terminator broke into Dr. Serena Kogan’s laboratory, where it wielded an M-25 heavy weapon to destroy two Endoskeletons that had attempted to protect her. It then knocked Dr. Kogan unconscious before successfully eliminating John Connor.

Following the end of the war, Skynet provided intelligence on the Terminator’s whereabouts to Marcus Wright, who led a team to track it down. Marcus was then taken before John Connor—who, now existing as a Terminator Endoskeleton, ordered the machine to be reprogrammed. With no usable voice samples of John remaining, Dr. Kogan modified the Terminator’s programming so that it would only respond to Kate Connor’s voice. Once reprogrammed, John Connor sent it through the Time Door into the past.

Note: The exact series designation of this T-850 equivalent in The Final Battle is unspecified, but it is presumed to be a T-800.

Trivia

  • In the novelization of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, the T-850 is activated and programmed by John and Kate, along with other Resistance members, at the CRS main facility. Unlike in the film and video game adaptation, where it is initially an assassin before being reprogrammed, this version of the T-850 is never under Skynet’s control. John also provides the T-850 with the image of the reprogrammed T-800 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
  • In the Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines video game, Kate Connor appears to trust the T-850. However, in Terminator 3: The Redemption, her counterpart displays lingering resentment toward it, possibly due to its past as John Connor’s executioner.
  • The T-850's designation is confirmed in multiple sources, including the film’s novelization and page 34 of the comic Eyes of the Rise Part 1. However, in the film, the Terminator is referred to as a "T-101" instead. This discrepancy likely stems from confusion between the Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 (CSM-101) and the T-800 series, a mix-up that also occurs in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, where the T-800 is labeled as "T-801" in the novel Terminator Hunt.
  • Additionally, in the Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines video game, this Terminator is mistakenly identified as "T-950 #55631485"[2]. This appears to be an error, as the same serial number is later assigned to a T-900 Terminator featured in the game's opening sequence.
  • In the novelization of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, the T-850's skin is made of duroplast, a form of pliant plastic instead of living tissue.
  • In Terminator 3: The Redemption, the T-850 endoskeleton is redesigned for the game, making it quite different from the T-800 as seen in the first two films. Its design is based on an early concept art of the T-900. In addition, the T-900 in The Redemption is an enhanced version of the T-850 in several aspects, including a Plasma Reactor as its power source and additional armor plate covering
