He also owns a blue 1958 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible, adding to his laid-back style. Personality[edit | edit source]

Despite his high status, Grand Kai is a warm, grandfatherly figure rather than a strict authority, similar in approach to Master Roshi. He treats everyone around him with a friendly informality, addressing even younger warriors with affectionate suffixes like “-chan,” such as "Goku-chan" or "Paikuhan-chan," which in Japanese are typically reserved for children.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Dragon Ball Z[edit | edit source]

Other World Saga[edit | edit source]

Goku first meets Grand Kai when he’s brought to his planet by North Kai. During their introduction, Grand Kai assigns Pikkon the task of stopping Cell’s rebellion in Hell. This led to a humorous misunderstanding where Goku initially thought Grand Kai was rudely telling Pikkon to “go to Hell.”

Soon after, Grand Kai hosts the Other World Tournament on his planet, with the prize being a personal training session from him. The final battle between Goku and Pikkon ends in a draw, and, humorously, Grand Kai avoids teaching either of them by using technicalities in the rules, as he’s fallen out of practice himself and isn't as powerful as either of them.

Bio-Broly[edit | edit source]

Grand Kai doesn’t physically appear in Bio-Broly, but he is mentioned at the end of the film. During a meal, Goku learns from Bubbles that Broly—or a similar figure—has been causing trouble in Hell. Grand Kai subsequently dispatches Goku and Pikkon to subdue the raging Saiyan, if not to defeat him outright, then at least to calm him down.

Fusion Reborn[edit | edit source]

In Fusion Reborn, Grand Kai appears alongside the other Kais at his planet, watching a tournament featuring deceased warriors from across the universe. When Janemba’s chaos disrupts the tournament, Grand Kai assigns Goku and Pikkon to investigate the disturbance at the Check-In Station. He later watches the ensuing battles with Janemba on TV alongside the other Kais.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Before the Supreme Kai’s introduction, Grand Kai was considered the strongest known Kai and was widely believed by Universe 7 mortals to be the most powerful being in the universe.
  • It remains uncertain if a "Grand Kai" rank exists in other universes, as the only widely shown Kais from other universes in Dragon Ball media are Supreme Kais. The sole exception is Zamasu, a former North Kai of Universe 10, who was in line to become a Supreme Kai.
  • Despite his high-ranking status, Grand Kai is not authorized to enter the Sacred World of the Kai.
  • In his formal attire, Grand Kai bears a resemblance to Melchior, a swordsmith from Chrono Trigger, another character designed by Akira Toriyama.
  • Although Grand Kai doesn’t appear directly in the Dragon Ball manga, he is mentioned within it. His anime portrayal was designed with input from the manga’s creator, Akira Toriyama.
