Fearing Broly's abilities, the king ordered both Paragus and his son to be executed. However, Broly saved his father from their demise and the destruction of Planet Vegeta. Appearance[edit | edit source]
Paragus is one of the few Saiyans depicted wearing battle armor distinct from the standard designs used by Frieza's forces. His armor slightly resembles Goku's Yardrat outfit. Interestingly, the color of Paragus' armor changes inconsistently across various flashbacks, and in at least one instance, he appears without armor altogether. He is also noted for his distinctive white collared cape, which drapes to the ground and covers the right side of his body. Due to an incident caused by Broly during his childhood, Paragus sustained an injury to his left eye, leaving a scar that extends from his left eyebrow to his cheek, as seen in Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Paragus is never shown fighting in the movies, a stark contrast to the typical pure-blood Saiyan who revels in battle. Unlike others of his race, Paragus avoids direct combat and disapproves of his son Broly's uncontrollable violence. Instead, he is portrayed as a calculated strategist, luring Vegeta to the doomed planet before initiating his revenge plan. Paragus is pragmatic in his pursuits; with King Vegeta already dead during the Saiyan Genocide, he targets Vegeta as the next best option for retribution. Furthermore, his schemes against Vegeta and the Z-Fighters also serve as a means to take over Earth without risking unnecessary damage to the planet.
Paragus shows a degree of attachment to Broly, begging King Vegeta to spare his infant son. Later, despite Broly's insanity, he expresses regret at leaving him stranded on a doomed planet (though the Funimation dub downplays this, suggesting his primary reason was Broly's uncontrollability). His ability to hide his true motives showcases his skill as an actor, maintaining a façade to manipulate others.
However, Paragus shares the ruthlessness of his race, displaying a willingness to kill for personal gain or enjoyment. He uses Broly to enslave the Shamoian people and coldly murders his loyal subordinate Moah, either out of paranoia or sheer cruelty. In the Japanese version, this act is more calculated, as Paragus eliminates Moah after the latter vows to keep his plans secret, revealing a deeply distrustful and self-serving side to his character.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Background[edit | edit source]
Before Planet Vegeta's destruction, Paragus held a prestigious position as a high-ranking Saiyan warrior loyal to King Vegeta. His elevated status is evident from his ability to address the King directly when summoned. However, this loyalty was shattered when King Vegeta discovered the immense potential of Paragus' son, Broly, and deemed him a threat. The King ordered Broly's execution, ignoring Paragus' desperate pleas to reconsider, including his argument that Broly could grow into a powerful ally for Prince Vegeta. Dismissing these appeals, King Vegeta struck Paragus with his Execution Beam and discarded both him and his son.
Ironically, on the same day, Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta for the very reason King Vegeta sought to eliminate Broly: fear of an uncontrollable Saiyan. However, Broly's latent power saved both himself and Paragus, as he created a protective sphere and transported them to another planet. Notably, Paragus appears to have been familiar with Bardock, as he immediately recognized Goku as Bardock's son. According to the Supplemental Daizenshuu, it is implied that Paragus may have even outranked Bardock within the Saiyan hierarchy.
In the years that followed, Paragus raised Broly, who grew increasingly violent and destructive, annihilating everything in his path. This uncontrollable behavior reached its peak during Broly's teenage years when, in a fit of rage, he gouged out Paragus' left eye with a single elbow strike. Determined to harness his son's overwhelming power, Paragus enlisted the help of a scientist to create a mind-control device capable of suppressing Broly's rage. When Paragus attempted to place the control crown on a sleeping Broly, he faced resistance as his son woke mid-attempt. Ultimately, the device succeeded, granting Paragus control over Broly's immense strength and enabling him to begin plotting his conquest of the universe.
Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan[edit | edit source]
Paragus devises an elaborate plan to exact revenge on the Vegeta family. He lures Prince Vegeta to a desolate world, naming it New Planet Vegeta, positioning it in the path of the massive Comet Camori, which is destined to destroy the planet and everyone on it. Paragus selects this barren world for his scheme because he intends to use Earth as his base of operations and cannot afford any risk of damaging it. To further deceive Vegeta, Paragus has Broly enslave the Shamoian people after devastating their home planet, forcing them to construct a palace on New Planet Vegeta to make it appear more convincing. It's implied that Broly used his Super Saiyan form during this invasion, amplifying the illusion of Paragus' control over him.
During this time, Paragus murders one of his soldiers, Moah, when the latter expresses fear after discovering Paragus' true plan to sacrifice everyone on the planet to Comet Camori. Trouble arises when Broly encounters Goku, triggering suppressed trauma from their shared infancy. Broly begins to slip out of Paragus' control, which deteriorates further with each subsequent interaction. Paragus' fears are realized when his plan is exposed to Vegeta, and Broly breaks free of his mind-control crown, transforming into a berserk Legendary Super Saiyan.
Realizing his ambition to rule the universe through Broly is now futile, Paragus watches in horror as his uncontrollable son defeats the Z Fighters. In a desperate attempt to save himself, he tries to escape the doomed planet in a space pod, lamenting the need to abandon Broly to his fate. However, his escape is thwarted when Broly destroys the pod, killing Paragus by crushing it and hurling it into the oncoming comet. In his final moments, Paragus bitterly reflects on the cruel irony of his death: being killed by the very son who once saved his life.
Broly - Second Coming[edit | edit source]
While Paragus does not physically appear in this film, a flashback during the end credits depicts Broly saving him from the destruction of Planet Vegeta. Additional scenes from the battle on New Planet Vegeta between Broly and Goku are also shown.
Fusion Reborn[edit | edit source]
Paragus briefly escapes from Hell when the barrier between dimensions collapses due to Janemba's actions. Ironically, he is commanded by Frieza to attack Gohan, but after witnessing Gohan dispatch Frieza with a single punch, Paragus and the other escapees flee in terror. After Janemba's defeat by Gogeta, Paragus is sent back to Hell.
Powers and Statistics[edit | edit source]
Tier: High 5-A
Powers and Abilities: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Limited Space Survival, Martial Arts, Acrobatics, Enhanced Senses (Saiyans have exceptional senses, allowing them to locate small, distant objects[1] by tracking their smell[2] and see clearly over long distances[3]), Ki Manipulation (Master Level), Flight, Accelerated Development (Batttle; Physical Stats & Abilities), Transformation (Can transform into an Oozaru, increasing his capabilities drastically, and giving him Type 1 Large Size), Limited Mind Manipulation (With his ring, Paragus can specifically control Broly. However, his son would eventually break free of its control). Resistance to Radiation Manipulation (Should be capable of absorbing over 17 Million Blutz Waves to transform into a Great Ape without ill effects.[4] Can fight in the upper atmosphere where radiation levels are exceedingly high[5])
Attack Potency: Brown Dwarf level+ (As an elite Saiyan, he should not be weaker than Beginning of Z Piccolo, who's somewhat comparable to Beginning of Z Goku)
Speed: At least Relativistic+ (Superior to Piccolo who can fire a beam that reachs the Moon in seconds)
Lifting Strength: Likely Class P
Striking Strength: Brown Dwarf level+
Durability: Brown Dwarf level+
Stamina: Unknown
Range: Standard Melee Range. Planetary with ki blasts and attacks.
Standard Equipment: Broly's ring and it's controller.

Additionally, he was was shown to have been a decent manipulator, fully convincing Vegeta of his false intentions, which the Saiyan prince would only have revealed to him due to Goku and Trunks' intervention. Paragus is also a clever tactician, having commissioned Krang to create means to control Broly, the likes of which knew he would be incapable of managing otherwise)
Weaknesses: Paragus needs a moon in order to transform into an Oozaru.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Paragus' name is a pun on the vegetable asparagus.
- Despite Future Trunks being from an alternate timeline, Paragus seemingly recognizes him. This is considered a plot hole, as Trunks is never properly introduced by name to Paragus. A potential explanation is that spies informed Paragus of Vegeta's son, Trunks, without mentioning his age, leading Paragus to assume Future Trunks was Vegeta's present-day offspring. Alternatively, Paragus may have monitored Vegeta and his associates remotely, similar to how Sorbet's Frieza Force observed the Dragon Team after Frieza's death in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'.
- Paragus shares similarities with Caulifla, as both attempt to guide and control the Legendary Super Saiyan of their universe (Broly and Kale). Both characters work to prevent their respective Saiyans from losing control of their power. Unlike Broly, however, Kale remains loyal to Caulifla.
- Paragus' relationship with Broly has parallels to his Dragon Ball Super counterpart, as both seek revenge on the House of Vegeta for King Vegeta's actions. Each uses a control mechanism to rein in their respective Broly (Broly's Ring for Paragus and the Broly Control Mechanism for his Dragon Ball Super counterpart). However, the original Broly serves Paragus willingly, while his Super counterpart is more independent. Both versions of Paragus meet their ends at the hands of a supposed ally (Broly in Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan and Frieza in Dragon Ball Super: Broly).
- Paragus is one of several movie antagonists, including Lord Slug, Bojack, and Frieza, to kill one or more of their subordinates. In the Japanese version of Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Paragus kills Moah to ensure he doesn't reveal Paragus' plans for Comet Camori. In the English dub, Paragus kills Moah for showing fear.
- Paragus' ambition to use Broly to establish a Saiyan empire mirrors Frieza's plan in Dragon Ball Super: Broly to use Broly to reestablish the Frieza Force's dominance in Universe 7. Ironically, in both timelines, Broly ends up turning on his benefactor—Paragus in the original timeline and Frieza in the Super timeline.
- It's implied that Broly destroyed the South Area after being outfitted with the control crown, as King Kai's reaction at the start of Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan suggests the galaxy's destruction occurred recently.
- Both Paragus and his Dragon Ball Super counterpart are the last Saiyans of their generation to die.
