Toppo is the leader of the Pride Troopers, a group from Universe 11 dedicated to protecting their universe from evil. He is the second strongest member of the team, surpassed only by Jiren. Toppo also serves as the God of Destruction Candidate for Universe 11. When he removes his inner restraints, he can fully access the power of a God of Destruction and, although he does not hold the official title, he can use the same abilities as one, including the legendary Hakai technique.

Appearance:[edit | edit source]

Toppo is a tall and burly humanoid alien with tan-colored skin, yellow eyes with dark lines beneath them, large pointy ears, and a prominent white mustache that covers his mouth. He has two perpetually visible veins on his head. Despite having a muscular build, his body is notably disproportionate: he has a portly midsection, comparatively short and skinny legs, very long arms, and massive hands that are larger than his head. Toppo typically wears a red and black spandex suit, which is part of the standard attire for the Pride Troopers.

Personality:[edit | edit source]

Toppo is characterized as a hot-blooded warrior dedicated to righteous justice, which aligns with his role as the leader of the Pride Troopers. He often names his techniques with a justice theme, such as the "Justice Flash," a trait shared with his teammates. In the anime, he is highly theatrical, often striking poses similar to Captain Ginyu, while in the manga, he is less prone to posing and does not preach about justice as frequently. He remains level-headed, analytical, and rational, which is evident during the Tournament of Power when he assesses battles with calm precision, like when he analyzed Dyspo’s fight against Hit.

As the leader of the Pride Troopers, Toppo is respectful and considerate towards his comrades, even trying to shield them from distressing news about the tournament. He is humble, openly admitting that he is not the strongest warrior in Universe 11, a title held by his close friend Jiren. Though he commands respect among the Pride Troopers, he refrains from interfering in Jiren’s decisions out of both respect and recognition of Jiren's unmatched strength.

Toppo’s respect extends to the gods, and he is visibly offended when an attack is accidentally launched toward one of them. He also shows humility by requesting permission to fight Goku after abruptly entering the arena. Even towards those he initially views as enemies, Toppo maintains a sense of honor. When he first meets Goku, he sees him as a villain threatening all universes, but after learning more about Goku's character and influence, he changes his view and recognizes him as a formidable warrior. In the manga, this transition is smoother, and Toppo is even amicable toward Goku despite knowing the latter's role in the Tournament of Power.

Toppo is known for his strong sense of fairness and honor in combat, criticizing fighters like Android 17 for interrupting ritualistic transformations, which he views as a representation of true justice. He even acknowledges the importance of these rituals, as seen when he defended the transformations of the Kamikaze Fireballs. Despite this, Toppo is not above taunting his enemies and displays a dry sense of humor, as evidenced by his banter with Vegeta over their "second strongest" status.

Despite his positive traits, Toppo has his limits. Under pressure, he can show frustration, desperation, and even animosity. Initially horrified by the Tournament of Power's rules and the behavior of the Omni-Kings, he is visibly stressed and resorts to going to a bar to calm down. During the tournament, his principles are tested to the breaking point when only three Universe 11 fighters remain, leading him to abandon his ideals of justice in favor of sheer survival. This shift in mindset allows Toppo to fully tap into his power and transform into a God of Destruction.

In his Destroyer Form, Toppo's demeanor shifts to one of cold cruelty. He becomes ruthless, particularly towards Frieza, who had tormented him during the fight with Android 17. Toppo relentlessly attacks Frieza and taunts him with sadistic delight, using phrases Frieza had previously used against him. In the manga, he also resorts to less honorable tactics, such as kicking Goku in the crotch to gain an advantage.

Despite these changes, Toppo is ultimately criticized by Jiren, who views his abandonment of principles as a sign of weakness. After being eliminated, Toppo acknowledges Jiren's disappointment, reflecting on his choices and showing concern for Jiren when he is also eliminated. His original personality resurfaces, and he encourages Jiren to keep fighting, expressing gratitude for his efforts to save their universe.

Biography:[edit | edit source]

Dragon Ball Super[edit | edit source]

Universe Survival Saga:[edit | edit source]

In the anime, Toppo appears at the Zeno Expo, dressed in a dark hood, alongside Belmod, Marcarita, and Khai from Universe 11. He first demonstrates his presence by deflecting an energy blast from a nearby battle, reprimanding the attacker for their disrespect towards a God.

Toppo soon challenges Goku to a fight after Goku's victory over Bergamo, believing Goku to be a villain due to his role in the creation of the Tournament of Power. With permission from Zeno and the Grand Priest, the two engage in battle. Toppo initially gains the upper hand over Super Saiyan Goku using a series of joint locks and submission holds. However, Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue, reversing the tide of the fight. Despite the change, Toppo continues to hold his ground until Goku uses an Instant Transmission-combined God Kamehameha, from which Toppo emerges with only minor injuries but angered over his damaged uniform, which represents the pride of his team. Just as both prepare to unleash their full power, the Great Priest intervenes to stop the fight. When Goku thanks Toppo for the fight and compliments his strength, Toppo dismisses his gratitude and mentions that there is someone even stronger than him: Jiren.

Shortly after this, Toppo is shown in a bar, looking concerned over the fate of his universe. His general, Kahseral, notices his worry and inquires about it, but before Toppo can explain, they are called to action against a foe that Dyspo cannot defeat alone. Eventually, Toppo explains the situation to the Pride Troopers and tells them that while their group will be understaffed temporarily, their new recruits will learn what it truly means to be a Pride Trooper. He and Dyspo attempt to bring Kahseral back to the bar to recruit him for the tournament, but Kahseral is busy rescuing a cat. Once the rescue is complete, they prepare to leave for the Tournament of Power.

During the tournament, Toppo initially clashes with Basil from Universe 9 and later fights Auta Magetta of Universe 6. When Goku attempts to fight him, Murichim of Universe 10 interrupts and knocks Goku aside. Later, Toppo reappears when Goku challenges Jiren. He attacks Goku with his Justice Flash and informs him that he has sent Kahseral, Tupper, Zoire, Kettle, and Cocotte to take care of the Saiyan while he and Jiren rest.

Toppo is later seen with Dyspo, reacting to Brianne de Chateau's call for her warriors. As the Kamikaze Fireballs prepare to transform, Android 17 interrupts them, prompting Toppo to join Brianne in scolding him, emphasizing the importance of their ritual. Brianne thanks him for understanding, and Toppo promises not to hold back. He then rejoins Dyspo, witnessing the magical transformation and proclaiming it as "true justice." When Brianne releases heart-shaped explosions, Toppo resists the odor and avoids the attack.

Toppo observes Dyspo's battle with Hit and, seeing Dyspo in trouble, sends K'nsi to assist. After K'nsi is defeated, Toppo decides to abandon all restraints, even moral ones, to save his universe. Later, he throws a Justice Punch at Cabba, knocking him into a rock and striking a victorious pose.

When Jiren confronts Goku, Toppo silently encourages him to defeat Goku and win the tournament to secure a wish from the Super Dragon Balls. Alongside Dyspo, he watches Jiren and Goku's Spirit Bomb clash and moves to protect Jiren when other warriors prepare to attack. Toppo witnesses Goku's survival and transformation into Ultra Instinct Sign form. He and Dyspo try to attack Goku but are effortlessly countered. Goku dodges Toppo's Justice Flash, walking toward Jiren, who signals to Toppo that his help is unnecessary.

When Jiren faces off against Hit, Toppo comments on how well Jiren is doing. He then joins Dyspo in battling Biarra and Catopesra as they attempt to target Jiren.

Much later, Toppo challenges Vegeta to a fight but is dismissed by the Saiyan prince as merely "second fiddle" to Jiren. Toppo counters that the same could be said for Vegeta in relation to Goku, provoking Vegeta into transforming into his Super Saiyan Blue form and engaging him in battle. Their fight is interrupted when Kale transforms into a Legendary Super Saiyan, distracting both Toppo and Vegeta. While Toppo acknowledges that Saiyans should not be underestimated, Vegeta declares himself the strongest among them and punches Toppo away. Toppo retaliates, pushing Vegeta, who is distracted by Goku and Kefla's battle. He taunts Vegeta by suggesting he could observe from the sidelines, then catches him in a Justice Rear Naked Choke, though Vegeta quickly breaks free. Afterward, Toppo reunites with Dyspo and Jiren, discussing how Goku continues to grow stronger with each encounter.

In the manga, Toppo and Dyspo attempt to prevent Goku from reaching Jiren, only for Goku to break free by transforming into Super Saiyan Blue. They soon face Vegeta, who knocks Dyspo aside and challenges Toppo. Their battle is disrupted when Kale, in her Legendary Super Saiyan form, knocks both of them off the ring. Dyspo saves Toppo from falling, allowing him to resume his fight with Vegeta at full power. When Vegeta attains Super Saiyan God SS Evolved, Toppo is flung onto a piece of rubble. Frieza destabilizes their platform with a Death Beam, leading to their elimination as Jiren chooses not to intervene.

In the anime, after Universe 7 defeats Agnilasa, the remaining warriors from Universe 11, including Toppo, confront the warriors of Universe 7. As Goku and Vegeta battle Jiren and Frieza faces Dyspo, Toppo challenges Gohan and Android 17. Toppo initially overwhelms Gohan, but before he can strike, Android 17 intervenes with a ki blast. Gohan counters with an Ultimate Explosive Kamehameha, but Toppo remains uninjured, mocking their strength and vowing to tear them apart. Gohan eventually disengages, leaving Android 17 to face Toppo alone.

Toppo chases down Android 17, nearly knocking him off the arena. However, Frieza intervenes and begins to torture Toppo, severely wounding him. At this point, Toppo abandons his principles of justice and embraces the path of survival, ascending to the power of a God of Destruction, shocking both Beerus and Shin. He then targets Frieza, who initially believes his Golden Form can match a God of Destruction. Toppo easily counters and appears to eliminate Frieza with a blast of Energy of Destruction before shifting his focus back to Android 17. Just as Toppo corners him, Frieza again interrupts. Toppo challenges Frieza to give his best shot, and Frieza responds with a Supernova, which Toppo effortlessly destroys before brutally beating Frieza down. He taunts Frieza once more and attempts to kick him off the stage, but Android 17 manages to save Frieza just in time.

Toppo resumes his battle with Android 17, who tries to outmaneuver and outsmart him. 17 eventually uses Toppo's own destructive energy against him, trapping him under a pile of rocks. However, Toppo quickly breaks free and bombards 17 with a series of ki blasts, overpowering him. Toppo then attempts to destroy the entire arena, but Frieza intervenes using his psychic powers. To Frieza's horror, his powers have no effect on Toppo. Frustrated by Toppo's inability to eliminate 17 and Frieza, Jiren fires a massive Power Impact at them, blasting them aside and signaling Toppo to confront Vegeta.

Initially, Toppo dominates Vegeta, driving him into debris. Toppo prepares to destroy everything with a powerful blast aimed at Vegeta. However, Vegeta, driven by memories of his family, his promise to Cabba, and his pride as a Saiyan, taps into his new power and overcomes the attack, overpowering Toppo. Determined to end the fight, Vegeta decides to use his Final Explosion, prepared to sacrifice himself to defeat Toppo. Despite Toppo's attempts to counter Vegeta's attack, Vegeta powers through, destroying most of the arena and eliminating Toppo, who loses his God of Destruction form in the process. Though left severely weakened and nearly out of power, Vegeta survives. Jiren mocks Toppo for abandoning his principles and still losing, contrasting him with Vegeta, who remained true to his beliefs and won.

Toppo then watches the final battle between Jiren and Goku, growing increasingly concerned as Goku, in his Ultra Instinct Sign form, begins to switch from defensive to offensive, countering Jiren's attacks. He is shocked as Goku completes Ultra Instinct and dominates Jiren. As the intense battle continues, Toppo is surprised to hear that Goku fights not just for himself, but for his friends, a trait he realizes he shares with the Saiyan.

After Jiren is seemingly defeated by the combined efforts of Android 17 and Frieza, Toppo encourages him not to give up, stating that he believes in Jiren's strength and will always acknowledge him as the strongest. Inspired by Toppo's words, Jiren stands up and continues fighting but is ultimately defeated and ringed out by Goku, Frieza, and Android 17. Toppo rushes to Jiren's aid and thanks him for his efforts to preserve their universe's survival before Universe 11 is erased.

Later, when Universe 11 is restored by Android 17's wish, Toppo approaches Jiren and tells him that his ability to stand back up and continue fighting was due to acknowledging Toppo's encouragement, emphasizing the value of companionship. He declares that next time they meet Universe 7, they will surely win.

Striking Strength: Low Multiverse level | Low Multiverse level

Durability: Low Multiverse level (Goku's Warp Kamehameha simply tore his clothes) | Low Multiverse level (Neither Android 17 nor Frieza were able to do any damage to him, and he should at least be comparable to SSBE Vegeta), his Energy of Destruction barrier which can erase attacks that touch it makes him hard to damage directly.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the original preview for the Universe Survival Saga, Jiren was initially planned to appear at the Zeno Expo, but he was replaced by Top in the final version.
  • Top's name is a pun and an anagram for the word "pot" (ポット potto), aligning with the theme of the Pride Troopers being named after kitchen appliances. His name also resembles the Italian word for "mouse" (topo) and the Spanish word for "mole" (topo) and is pronounced identically to them. In the Funimation dub, his name is changed to "Top" to emphasize the anagram for "pot" in English.
  • Top bears a slight resemblance to The Lorax from Dr. Seuss' book The Lorax.
