Gotenks (ゴテンクス, Gotenkusu) is the Metamoran fusion of Goten and Trunks, characterized by a blend of their unique traits and enhanced power.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Gotenks wears the standard dark blue (black in the manga) and yellow Metamoran vest, a signature feature of all Fusion Dance characters. He pairs this with a teal sash, white silky pants, dark shoes with teal wraps, and black wristbands. His hairstyle is a striking blend of his fusees’ features, resembling Vegeta's spiky hair with a mix of Goten's black hair and Trunks' lavender highlights. His widow's peak further emphasizes this resemblance. As a Saiyan/Human hybrid, Gotenks has the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan, where his hair style closely mirrors Goten's Super Saiyan form. Despite his young age, Gotenks' body is notably muscular and toned.

In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Gotenks appears in his fat, failed fusion form. However, his outfit differs, featuring a green vest with yellow padding, a teal belt, and black wristbands.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Gotenks’ personality is a unique amalgamation of Goten and Trunks’ traits. He inherits Trunks' cockiness, arrogance, and mischievous nature, combined with Goten's playfulness and occasional whininess. He is an immature and conceited fighter who often underestimates opponents, fueled by the significant power boost he gains from fusion. His dramatic tendencies are evident in his flamboyant naming of techniques and exaggerated battle antics, akin to Mr. Satan—though, unlike the latter, Gotenks possesses the power to justify his confidence.

Gotenks sees himself as a hero fighting for justice, but his arrogance and tendency to show off often hinder his effectiveness. A notable example of this is during his battle with Super Buu, where he pretends to run out of techniques to build tension before revealing his Super Saiyan 3 form. This delay leads Piccolo to trap them in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Super Buu then escapes by breaking the dimensional barrier, consuming everyone on The Lookout except Dende. This tragic turn might have been avoided had Gotenks taken the fight seriously from the start. Several characters, including Piccolo, have remarked on Gotenks’ refusal to listen to others, a trait reminiscent of Vegeta.

As an adult, Gotenks demonstrates greater maturity, taking battles more seriously. This shift likely reflects the development of his fusees, Goten and Trunks, who have outgrown the childishness of their youth and now approach fighting with more focus and responsibility. This evolution aligns Gotenks’ personality closer to that of Gogeta, his "fusion father."

Biography[edit | edit source]

Dragon Ball Z[edit | edit source]

Majin Buu Saga[edit | edit source]

Gotenks first appears during the Majin Buu Saga, created as a desperate measure to counter the overwhelming power of Majin Buu, who had already defeated Earth's strongest fighters, including Gohan and Vegeta, and wiped out a significant portion of the planet's population. To prepare for this challenge, Goten and Trunks—Gotenks’ fusion counterparts—were trained in the Fusion Dance by Goku, who had learned the technique in the Other World. After Goku's time on Earth expired, Piccolo took over their training, ensuring they mastered the intricate steps needed to execute a successful fusion.

Initially, Goten and Trunks struggled with the Fusion Dance, failing twice due to minor errors in their movements. These mistakes resulted in grotesque versions of Gotenks: one emaciated and another morbidly obese. Because each fusion lasts only 30 minutes, an hour was lost correcting these errors. Eventually, the two successfully performed the Fusion Dance, giving rise to Gotenks.

Upon his creation, Gotenks displayed remarkable power, leading Piccolo and others to recognize his potential. However, his arrogance overshadowed his judgment. Despite Piccolo's advice to wait 30 minutes to fuse again as Super Saiyans, Gotenks insisted he was already strong enough to defeat Majin Buu. Ignoring Piccolo's warnings, Gotenks flew off to confront Buu.

During their encounter, Gotenks mocked Majin Buu, calling him "fat" and provoking him into a fight. However, Buu easily overpowered the overconfident fusion, defeating him effortlessly. Gotenks was forced to retreat, realizing his strength was insufficient to challenge Buu. Upon his return, Piccolo reprimanded him for his recklessness and emphasized the need for additional training before attempting to face Buu again the following day.

Trunks and Goten transformed into Super Saiyans to prepare for the Fusion Dance, but because the technique requires both participants to have nearly identical power levels, Trunks had to lower his energy to match Goten's slightly lower power, as Trunks was a year older and stronger. Successfully fused, they became Super Saiyan Gotenks, a new and powerful warrior eager to test his abilities.

To showcase his newfound speed and strength, Gotenks raced around the world dozens of times in an instant, with Piccolo struggling to keep up. Observing Gotenks’ incredible speed and playful antics, Piccolo analyzed his power and noted that his transformation was highly impressive. Confident in his abilities, Gotenks declared himself ready to face Majin Buu. However, his fusion time ran out after he took a nap following his worldwide laps, defusing back into Goten and Trunks before Majin Buu even realized what was happening. Piccolo insisted that the boys rest and recover their energy after the demanding process of fusion.

Meanwhile, Majin Buu underwent a dramatic transformation. Following a brief clash with his evil counterpart, Evil Buu, Majin Buu was absorbed, creating the more sinister and powerful Super Buu. During Super Saiyan 3 Goku's fight with Majin Buu, Goku promised him the appearance of another powerful warrior. Although Buu was initially skeptical, he agreed to wait for this new challenger.

Now, as Super Buu, he gained the ability to sense ki and immediately located The Lookout, where Goten, Trunks, Piccolo, and the rest of the group were hiding. The Z Fighters were horrified by Super Buu’s overwhelming power and his arrival at The Lookout. With Goku’s time on Earth expired, Vegeta having sacrificed himself in a failed attempt to destroy Majin Buu, and Gohan thought dead but actually training on the Sacred World of the Kai to unlock his latent potential, Gotenks became the group’s last hope to face the newly evolved Super Buu.

After arriving at The Lookout, Super Buu demanded the promised fighter. With Goten and Trunks still resting, Piccolo was left to confront the monstrous foe. To buy time, Piccolo promised Super Buu that the fighter would be ready in one hour. However, Super Buu's impatience got the better of him. To pass the time, he wiped out nearly all of Earth's remaining population by sensing their energy and launching countless energy blasts. Only a select few, such as Tien, Chiaotzu, and Mr. Satan (along with his dog Bee), managed to survive.

Despite the devastation, Super Buu’s impatience continued to grow. Before half an hour had passed, he demanded to see his opponent. Piccolo, knowing that Gotenks was not yet ready, devised a stalling tactic by leading Buu on a lengthy path to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. This bought Goten and Trunks precious time to rest and train. Since time flows differently in the chamber, the minute-long delay in the outside world provided them with roughly six hours to prepare. Super Buu eventually grew suspicious of the delay and threatened to kill everyone at The Lookout unless taken to his opponent immediately. With no other option, Piccolo led him to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

Inside the chamber, Super Buu encountered Goten and Trunks and mistook the two for his opponent. As they prepared to fuse, Super Buu abruptly attacked Trunks, knocking him down. Trunks, undeterred, demanded that Buu wait and watch their fusion. Intrigued by their theatrics, Super Buu allowed the two to perform the Fusion Dance, creating Gotenks. However, upon seeing the young warrior, Super Buu mocked him and invited him to attack.

Gotenks charged at Super Buu with confidence but was swiftly overpowered, repeatedly knocked down with little effort. Refusing to give up, Gotenks continued his assault, trying an array of peculiar and humorously ineffective attacks. Super Buu easily dodged or deflected each move and ultimately struck Gotenks into a wall, declaring his disappointment in the so-called "fighter." Undeterred, Gotenks decided to take things seriously and transformed into a Super Saiyan, reigniting the battle with renewed power.

Piccolo was relieved when Gotenks finally transformed into a Super Saiyan, as he previously couldn't achieve the form outside of fusion. Confident in his newfound strength, Gotenks decided to try another bizarre attack. He created a glowing energy ring, naming it the Galactic Donut, and encircled Super Buu with it. The ring tightened, intending to suffocate the opponent. While Super Buu initially appeared to struggle, he effortlessly broke free with a blast of energy, leaving Gotenks stunned. Undeterred, Gotenks launched himself at Super Buu, managing to land some blows, including a playful headbutt, though most of the damage Buu took seemed incidental and superficial.

Super Buu, growing tired of the antics, retaliated with his superior speed, knocking Gotenks to the ground with a powerful kick. The two briefly exchanged blows, but Super Buu quickly gained the upper hand, swiping Gotenks with his head tentacle. Piccolo watched anxiously as even in Super Saiyan form, Gotenks struggled to keep up with Buu’s overwhelming power. Realizing he needed a new strategy, Gotenks devised one of his strangest attacks yet.

Summoning his energy, Gotenks began to spit out ghostly versions of himself, much to the confusion of both Super Buu and Piccolo. Introducing this peculiar technique as the Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack, Gotenks sent the first ghost charging at Buu. When Buu punched it, the ghost detonated on contact, causing significant damage. Super Buu screamed in pain, seemingly injured, but quickly regenerated his body back to perfect condition, shocking both Gotenks and Piccolo.

Refusing to give up, Gotenks summoned ten more ghosts, arranging them in a line. While he chatted animatedly with his ghostly duplicates, Piccolo noticed that Super Buu had grown bored and was casually lounging, sipping on a can of soda while waiting for Gotenks to act. Furious at Buu's nonchalant attitude, Gotenks ordered all his ghosts to attack at once. However, Super Buu had figured out their weakness and began skillfully evading them, easily destroying two ghosts without making contact. This infuriated Gotenks, but he prepared to escalate the battle further.

Gotenks devises a clever strategy to trick Super Buu, knowing his insatiable hunger. He instructs his ghosts to act as though they’ve found food, pointing at the ground and murmuring about its odd appearance. Intrigued, Super Buu asks if he can eat it and curiously approaches the spot. The ghosts seize the opportunity and detonate, blowing Buu to pieces. Gotenks and Piccolo celebrate, believing they’ve finally defeated him, and burn the remaining fragments of Buu. However, to their dismay, Super Buu regenerates once again.

Gotenks dramatically pretends to be at a loss, feigning despair despite knowing he has a hidden technique yet to be revealed. Piccolo, believing they are out of options, destroys the entrance and exit of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, seemingly trapping them all inside forever. Gotenks teases Piccolo by revealing he still has energy, prompting a heated exchange of insults. Meanwhile, Super Buu, upon realizing he may never eat sweets again, becomes furious. His anger reaches a breaking point, and with an intense scream, he tears a dimensional rift, creating an escape route out of the Chamber.

Super Buu escapes and emerges outside, leaving Gotenks and Piccolo trapped. He quickly gains the upper hand, having the remaining Z Warriors at his mercy. Krillin bravely confronts Buu but is swiftly defeated and turned into chocolate. Buu then uses his Antenna Beam to transform everyone on the Lookout into candy, consuming them all.

Inside the Chamber, Gotenks and Piccolo are left bewildered at how Super Buu managed to escape. They attempt to replicate his method, screaming and powering up, but fail repeatedly. Eventually, Gotenks decides to reveal his "secret ability." As he powers up, his hair grows longer, his eyebrows vanish, and lightning crackles around him. In a dazzling display of energy, Gotenks ascends beyond Super Saiyan 2, unveiling his transformation into a Super Saiyan 3, an incredible leap in power.

Piccolo is awestruck by Gotenks' transformation into Super Saiyan 3, crediting Goku’s influence for helping Gotenks achieve such power. Gotenks quickly gets to work, attempting to replicate Super Buu's dimensional tear. With his newfound strength, he successfully creates a hole and escapes, urging Piccolo to follow before the exit closes permanently. Snapping out of his shock, Piccolo complies, and both escape the Hyperbolic Time Chamber just in time.

Once outside, they are horrified by the devastation Super Buu has caused. The villain reveals that he has consumed everyone using his beam, leaving Kami’s Lookout cracked and crumbling. When Gotenks demands to know what happened to everyone, Super Buu coldly responds that they are all inside his stomach. Overcome with fury at the fate of his loved ones, particularly his thoughts of Bulma and Chi-Chi, Gotenks charges at Super Buu, determined to avenge them.

Gotenks initially gains the upper hand, using his Super Saiyan 3 strength to overwhelm Super Buu with a series of rapid punches. His speed proves superior at first, and he lands several successful hits. However, Super Buu soon begins to counter Gotenks' attacks by exploiting the elasticity of his body, twisting into loops and dodging most of Gotenks’ strikes. The battle intensifies as the two exchange blows, with Gotenks momentarily regaining control by using his Brain Crush Hammer to blow Super Buu apart.

Gotenks celebrates prematurely, but Super Buu quickly reforms. This time, he uses a cunning strategy: spinning his disassembled pieces rapidly and trapping Gotenks. Super Buu’s lower body wraps tightly around Gotenks, immobilizing him, while his upper body looms menacingly behind. Super Buu laughs as he begins to squeeze Gotenks relentlessly, ignoring his demands to stop. The relentless grip causes Gotenks visible pain as Super Buu tightens his hold.

Still gripping Gotenks, Super Buu takes off, flying a considerable distance before arriving at a mountain. With a malicious grin, he suddenly releases Gotenks from his crushing hold, flinging him with immense force. Gotenks crashes violently into the mountain, creating a massive crater and leaving Piccolo anxiously watching from the sidelines.

Gotenks, determined to overpower Super Buu, unleashes a new technique, the Balloon Flash Bomber. He creates 14 powerful ghosts, each capable of causing immense damage. Super Buu skillfully dodges and eliminates most of the ghosts, but one manages to catch him off guard and explodes on contact, leaving him momentarily vulnerable. Gotenks capitalizes on the opportunity, attacking and tearing Super Buu to pieces. However, as expected, Super Buu regenerates completely, showing no signs of slowing down.

The battle becomes intense as Gotenks, despite his Super Saiyan 3 power, struggles with Super Buu's endless regeneration. Even though Gotenks delivers devastating attacks, such as slicing Super Buu in half and firing relentless energy beams, his energy begins to drain rapidly. Super Buu acknowledges Gotenks' newfound strength with a sinister smile, surprising even Piccolo, who feels a mix of pride and concern as he watches the ferocious fight unfold.

Super Buu takes the offensive, contorting his body into a ball-like form and using it to wreak havoc. His agility and speed in this form overwhelm Gotenks temporarily, creating massive destruction in the surrounding area. However, Gotenks counters with another creative move, the Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball. Using energy rings, Gotenks traps Super Buu in his ball form. In a comedic moment, Gotenks spikes the "Super Buu Ball" into the ground with Piccolo's help, leaving Super Buu seemingly defeated.

Super Buu, however, breaks free by generating a powerful blast from within the energy rings, re-emerging unscathed. Gotenks and Super Buu resume their battle, with Gotenks launching his Continuous Die Die Missile attack, temporarily gaining an edge. The two clash fiercely, their fight extending beyond Kami’s Lookout into nearby cities and mountains. Despite Gotenks’ relentless attacks and clever techniques, Super Buu remains resilient, occasionally exploiting Gotenks’ momentary lapses to land painful counterattacks.

Both fighters push each other to their limits, their energy shaking the environment and escalating the stakes of the battle. Piccolo observes anxiously, recognizing that Gotenks’ time in his Super Saiyan 3 form is running out, while Super Buu shows no signs of tiring. The outcome remains uncertain as their battle intensifies.

The battle between Super Buu and Gotenks reaches its peak as Super Buu unleashes a powerful energy wave from his mouth, critically injuring Gotenks. In response, Gotenks mirrors the attack and deals significant damage to Super Buu, though the pink monster regenerates as always. The two exchange blows in a fierce battle, with neither gaining a definitive upper hand. Piccolo notices that Super Buu is starting to take real damage and praises Gotenks for his progress.

As the fight progresses, Gotenks begins to exhaust both his power and the limited time left in his Super Saiyan 3 transformation. Determined to finish the fight, he lands a barrage of attacks on Super Buu, seemingly gaining the upper hand. However, just as Gotenks prepares to deliver a finishing blow, his Super Saiyan 3 form dissipates due to energy depletion, reverting him to his base form. Attempting to bluff Super Buu, Gotenks pretends to power up into an even stronger form and summons ghosts, but they are far weaker and ineffective. Super Buu easily destroys the ghosts and turns his attention back to Gotenks.

Super Buu charges at the weakened Gotenks and dominates him until the fusion timer runs out, causing Gotenks to split back into Trunks and Goten. With Gotenks no longer a threat, Piccolo steps forward for one last stand, only to be interrupted by the arrival of Gohan. Having had his potential unlocked by the Old Kai on the Sacred World of the Kais, Gohan arrives with immense power and effortlessly overpowers Super Buu.

Super Buu, recognizing his disadvantage, detonates himself to avoid defeat. He returns an hour later, knowing Goten and Trunks need more time to attempt fusion again. After they transform back into Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks, Super Buu ambushes them by releasing two blobs from his back, which absorb Gotenks and Piccolo into his body. The battle shifts focus as Gohan, Goku, and Vegeta face evil versions of the absorbed warriors inside Super Buu’s mind. Eventually, Gotenks' role ends when Goten and Trunks are freed from Super Buu, and the battle transitions to the Supreme Kai's planet after Earth’s destruction.

Gotenks makes a playful reappearance after Buu's defeat in the episode Celebrations with Majin Buu. While bathing with Goku, Goten and Trunks fuse into Gotenks and engage in a playful fight in a hot tub. Goku humorously overpowers them as a Super Saiyan and jokes that staying fused might spare them from a double scolding from Chi-Chi.

The Return of Son Goku and Friends![edit | edit source]

Two years after Kid Buu's defeat, Goten and Trunks attend a banquet hosted by Mr. Satan in celebration of the victory. During the event, Vegeta's brother, Tarble, arrives with his wife, explaining that their planet is being threatened by Abo and Kado, two remnants of the Frieza Force. Goten and Trunks initially challenge the duo but are overpowered individually. They then fuse into Gotenks, quickly overpowering the merged fighter Aka.

Gotenks uses a mix of techniques, including Yamcha's Wolf Fang Fist and Tien Shinhan's Volleyball Attack, to defeat Aka. However, Aka retaliates with his own destructive technique, the Super Wahaha no Ha, which causes the hotel to be destroyed. Gotenks protects Tarble and his wife from the blast, and shortly afterward, Goku finishes Aka off with a Kamehameha. With the threat eliminated, they return to their celebration at the banquet.

Fusion Reborn[edit | edit source]

after sensing their fathers, Goku and Vegeta, fuse to become Gogeta to battle Janemba in Hell, Goten and Trunks decide to fuse as well. They become Super Saiyan Gotenks and face off against The Dictator and his forces. Gotenks creates an army of ghosts that wreak havoc on the enemy army, showcasing his powers in a fun and creative way.

Wrath of the Dragon[edit | edit source]

Goten and Trunks fuse once more to fight against Hirudegarn. They use their powerful Continuous Die Die Missiles to attack the monster, but Hirudegarn undergoes a transformation and gains a new, stronger form. He defeats Gotenks with a single powerful punch, causing the fusion to wear off when Gotenks falls headfirst into the ground.

Dragon Ball Super[edit | edit source]

God of Destruction Beerus Saga[edit | edit source]

Gotenks challenges Beerus after the latter's victory over Good Buu. In the manga, Gotenks takes on his Super Saiyan 3 form and mocks Beerus for getting upset over pudding. Infuriated, Beerus slaps Gotenks on the arm, and in the manga, the slap sends Gotenks into the ocean where he defuses. In the anime, the slap causes Gotenks' arm to swell, forcing him to defuse.

Golden Frieza Saga[edit | edit source]

Gotenks is formed to battle Tagoma when Frieza is revived on Earth. However, upon seeing his friends enjoying themselves at Capsule Corporation, Gotenks realizes he should not be interfering with Frieza and decides to set his sights on him, only to defuse shortly afterward.

Copy-Vegeta Saga[edit | edit source]

On Planet Potaufeu, Goten and Trunks fuse into Gotenks again to face Copy-Vegeta. Despite using his Miracle Punch, Miracle Kick, and transforming into Super Saiyan 3, none of his attacks are effective. Gotenks tries several other powerful moves, including the Grand Special Rolling Kick, Super Special Crash Hammer, and Finish Special Flash Strong Bomber, but they all fail. After being pummeled by Copy-Vegeta, Gotenks finally defuses back into Goten and Trunks.

Super Hero Saga[edit | edit source]

several years later, Goten and Trunks attempt the fusion dance once again to face the threat of Cell Max. However, due to rust from not using the technique in years, they end up producing a fat Gotenks, much weaker than usual. Unable to even transform into Super Saiyan, fat Gotenks charges at Cell Max but is easily swatted aside. Despite this, he manages to help by putting a crack in Cell Max's forehead after Android 18 strikes him. Later, when Goten and Trunks try the fusion again during their battle with Ultimate Gohan, they once again fail to perform the dance correctly, resulting in fat Gotenks being defeated with a single kick.

  • Hyper Plasma Shortcake (Flying Blue Jay Assault in English Dub): Gotenks kicks the opponent into the air, and the attack’s effects are shown in the manga and Budokai series, though not in the anime.
  • Ultra Missile Parfait (Split Apple Combo in English Dub): Gotenks kicks the opponent into the air, then kicks and punches them down with rapid attacks. This is shown in the anime and used in the Budokai series.
  • Great Special Rolling Kick: Gotenks spins at high speed and lands a kick on the opponent, though it fails to cause damage in some contexts, like against Duplicate Vegeta.
  • Super Special Crush Hammer: Gotenks flies into the air, claps his hands together, and strikes the opponent with a two-handed fist attack. This technique, used against Duplicate Vegeta, fails to inflict any damage.
  • Finish Special Flash Strong Bomber: A combination of Final Flash and another technique, used in an attempt to defeat Duplicate Vegeta but deemed childish by the character himself.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Chinese Name Format: According to the Chinese name format rule, Gotenks can also be written as "Wutianks" or "Wutienks."
  • Videl's Comment: When Gotenks first fuses correctly, Videl comments that he has Goten's hair. However, his hairstyle looks different from Goten's, though she may have been referring to Gotenks' Super Saiyan hairstyle, which Goten had used in battle before.
  • Pronouns Used by Gotenks: Gotenks frequently switches between using "we" and "our," referring to the two fusees. However, sometimes he switches to "I" or "me" when speaking, showing his internal confusion over the fusion.
  • Defusing in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber: Before Gotenks transforms into Super Saiyan 3, when Piccolo hits him over the head in response to one of Gotenks' remarks, Gotenks briefly defuses for a split second.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In the Budokai Tenkaichi and Raging Blast video games, if Gotenks defeats characters like Vegeta or Goku, he breaks the fourth wall by saying, "Check out who just became the main character!"
  • Xenoverse 2 Trivia: In the Conton City Tournament online event in Xenoverse 2, Gotenks, along with Goku, Videl, and Adult Gohan, serves as a Patroller Academy instructor. If Gotenks is selected, the Future Warrior will fight Kefla in the Quarterfinals instead of the usual instructors. This is because Gotenks’ fusees, Trunks and Goten, were eliminated earlier in the tournament.
  • Special Dialogue with Chronoa: In a fight with Chronoa, she mentions that she won't go easy on Gotenks just because he's a child. Gotenks responds with, "I don't mind fighting you, but don't blame me for what happens," indicating his playful confidence.
