Cell Jr. (セルジュニア, Seru Junia) are asexually produced offspring of Cell, created through cellular mitosis from his tail. According to Cell, each Cell Junior possesses the same power level and abilities as himself.

They serve as the secondary antagonists in the Cell Games Saga.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Cell Juniors resemble Cell in his Perfect Form, sharing his black wings, purple lines on the cheeks, yellow ears, pink eyes, and purple joints. However, they differ in size and color, being smaller and blue, with shorter horns and wings proportional to their bodies. They also lack the stingers on their backs that Cell has, rendering them unable to absorb other beings or produce offspring of their own.

Personality[edit | edit source]

The Cell Juniors exhibit behavior similar to very young children: they are curious, mischievous, and playful but enjoy inflicting harm on others. They often taunt their opponents and toy with them. Initially, they follow Cell's orders obediently, and later Android 17's orders when he tames them. They are confident in their battle prowess and attack in numbers, using their inherited techniques. If faced with an overwhelming opponent, they may panic and attempt to escape.

After being tamed by Android 17, the Cell Juniors become protective of Monster Island. They attack anyone who isn't a Park Ranger, including Goten and Trunks, until they recognize their Ranger uniforms.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Dragon Ball Z - Cell Saga[edit | edit source]

The Cell Juniors are created during the Cell Games when Cell seeks to provoke Gohan into unleashing his hidden potential. To do this, he commands the Cell Juniors to attack the Z Fighters, including Goku, Vegeta, Future Trunks, Piccolo, Krillin, Tien Shinhan, and Yamcha.

Each Cell Junior is incredibly powerful, comparable in strength to Super Saiyan Vegeta and Future Trunks. They overwhelm most of the Z Fighters without exerting their full power:

  • Two Cell Juniors defeat Tien and Yamcha, with one breaking Yamcha's arm.
  • Another two overpower Krillin and an exhausted Goku.
  • Three fight Piccolo, Vegeta, and Future Trunks, causing significant damage and occasionally gaining the upper hand. One is even strong enough to catch Vegeta's Final Flash and throw it aside (this occurs in the anime's filler content).

However, when Gohan becomes enraged by the Cell Juniors' assault and Cell's killing of Android 16, he transforms into a Super Saiyan 2, awakening his hidden power. In this form, Gohan effortlessly defeats all of the Cell Juniors with a few blows, shocking the Z Fighters and angering Cell. Before being defeated, one Cell Junior attempts to hold Krillin hostage to deter Gohan, but Gohan's speed in Super Saiyan 2 form allows him to save Krillin and defeat the Cell Junior before it can counterattack.

Interlude and Later Appearances of the Cell Juniors[edit | edit source]

After seemingly being killed by Gohan during the Cell Games, the Cell Juniors were revealed to have survived by regenerating through their intact nuclei. Later, Android 17 tamed them to protect Monster Island and to refrain from attacking the island's rangers.

During the Majin Buu Saga, Super Buu used his Human Extinction Attack to kill nearly all life on Earth, including the Cell Juniors. However, while fighting Kid Buu on the Sacred World of the Kai, Vegeta requested that Dende make a wish to Porunga to restore Earth and the lives of all its good-willed inhabitants. The Cell Juniors were revived, implying that they were considered good-hearted beings after being tamed by Android 17.

Dragon Ball Super - Universe Survival Saga[edit | edit source]

In the Dragon Ball Super manga, as Android 17 heads to meet Team Universe 7 for the Tournament of Power, he realizes he forgot to inform Goten and Trunks about the presence of the Cell Juniors on Monster Island. Simultaneously, the Cell Juniors encounter Goten and Trunks. When one Cell Junior attacks Trunks, both young Saiyans transform into Super Saiyans, leading to a seven-on-two battle. However, the fight stops when a Cell Junior notices the ranger uniforms worn by Goten and Trunks. The Cell Juniors apologize for the misunderstanding and leave peacefully.

Dragon Ball Online[edit | edit source]

Cell Juniors have counterparts called Cell-X Juniors, which are the perfect offspring of Cell-X. Unlike the original blue Cell Juniors, they are green.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse[edit | edit source]

Due to Towa and Mira's interference, a new history emerges where Dark Mr. Satan overpowers the Z Fighters, and Dark Cell with two Dark Cell Juniors defeats Gohan with their version of the Father-Son Kamehameha. The Future Warrior is sent back to fix the timeline, defeating the powerful Dark Cell Juniors and eventually Dark Cell.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2[edit | edit source]

Dark Cell Juniors appear during the Cell Games, and the Future Warrior must defeat them to prevent the deaths of the Z Fighters. Unlike the original timeline, the Cell Juniors stay alive longer, necessitating the Future Warrior's intervention.

They also appear in Lord Slug's School Quest "Lesson 2" as practice targets for the Future Warrior to test the Dark Twin Star technique.

Gotenks also uses them for training the Future Warrior during the lesson for the Continuous Die Die Missile technique.

Dragon Ball Fusions[edit | edit source]

In the sub-event "Mini Cell Games," Tekka's Team finds five Cell Juniors in the Timespace Rift. After defeating them, the Cell Juniors become recruitable characters. They are C-Rank fighters classified as Earthlings and capable of regeneration, as seen in the "Bonus Story 3" manga chapter of the Universal Survival Saga.

Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle[edit | edit source]

Cell Juniors appear as minor enemies in Quest Mode, particularly in Area 2: "The Ultimate Lifeform! - Malicious Android: Cell." They assist Imperfect Cell against Future Trunks and his team. The Cell Juniors continue to appear as minor enemies throughout the game, with a chance to acquire their character cards.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission[edit | edit source]

Ahms gains the ability to create Cell Juniors empowered by Dark Magic after absorbing Super Perfect Cell and 100% Full Power Frieza. Sealas uses these Dark Magic-powered Cell Juniors as henchmen, and Sealas (Fused) also inherits this ability.

Dragon Ball Legends[edit | edit source]

New Cell can create Cell Juniors and uses them to train participants in the Tournament of Time for the Super Cell Games. These Cell Juniors possess the cells of various fighters like Captain Ginyu, Cabba, Frost, Nappa, and Shallot, giving them traits of the Super Saiyan God subspecies due to Shallot's cells.

Attacks & Techniques[edit | edit source]

  • Flight – The ability to fly with the use of ki.
  • Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave.
  • Cell Juniors can extend their finger nails to great lengths, and are sharp enough to cause severe damage; as implied when one of them tried to threaten Gohan to back off lest Krillin end up killed.
  • Taunt - Taunting is performed by a user performing some form of gesture, remark, or insult to annoy or enrage their opponent and throw off their thinking. One of Cell Junior's Super Skills in the Xenoverse series. Can be learned by Cell Jr. as a Special Move after reaching Lv. 30 in Dragon Ball Fusions.
    • Group Taunt - A stronger version of Taunt that can be learned by Cell Junior at Lv. 60 in Dragon Ball Fusions.
  • Blasting Beam – It is an orange energy wave fired from both hands joined together. Named in the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game.
  • Attack Alteration and Redirection – A technique where the user uses their ki to catch an opponents attack, then alters it and fires it again as their own attack.
  • Face Slap – A physical hit used by a Cell Jr. against Goku. Named in the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game.
  • Kamehameha – A powerful Ki blast fired with two hands after concentrating a large amount of Ki.
    • Super Kamehameha - An advanced version of the Kamehameha invented by Goku. While never used in the anime or manga, the attack is their ultimate technique in Super Butōden 2, the Budokai Tenkaichi series, and Battle of Z.
      • Father-Son Kamehameha - A team attack performed by Cell Juniors and their father Perfect Cell against Teen Gohan in what-if scenario The True Ultimate Android in Budokai Tenkaichi and in an altered timeline in Xenoverse.

  • Destructo Disc – A razor-sharp disc of Ki that can slice through almost any substance.
  • Tri-Beam – This technique is performed by gathering energy, forming a vaguely diamond-shape "tunnel" with the hand's by keeping the fingers on each hand together, overlapping the index finger on the one hand with the pinky of the other hand, and overlapping the thumbs. The object being focused on gets zoomed in on and visualized inside that diamond, then the user shouts "Tri-Beam, ha!" while releasing the large yellow beam from the hands.
    • Spirit Tri-Beam - A one-handed version of the Tri-Beam. In the Xenoverse series, Cell Juniors can use this technique when using the Tri-Beam Super Skill on the ground as with all users of the Tri-Beam Super Skill in the Xenoverse series.
  • Special Beam Cannon – The move is performed by touching the index and middle fingers of one hand to the forehead and charging enough ki to attack. Its speed changes to the power level of the user performing the move. When ready, the fingers are extended forward, and two thin energy beams are unleashed from the fingers. One remains straight while the other coils around the straight beam. The resulting beam is quite powerful, drilling through most targets, and exploding on the ones it can't. Used in Super Butōden 2 and the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
  • Regeneration - In the Dragon Ball Super manga "Bonus Story 3", it is revealed that after being taken down by Gohan, the Cell Jrs. regenerated. It is suggested they did not became stronger after surviving and regenerating like their father did as their power is around the same level as during the Cell Games though it is unknown if their power increased after surviving near death but diminished over time (possibly through a lack of training) between the after the Cell Games and the timeframe of the Tournament of Power.
    • EX Regeneration - Automatically regenerates and restores a medium amount of health each turn. One of the passive Skills of Cell Jr. in Dragon Ball Fusions.
    • Super Regeneration - A stronger form of regeneration that can be learned by Cell Jr. as a Special Move after reaching Lv. 30 in Dragon Ball Fusions.

While using this power up their eyes glow red, and they gain a purple and black aura of Dark Energy. In World Mission, Ahms and Sealas (Fused) can give birth to Villainous Mode empowered Cell Juniors as a result of Ahms absorption of the SDBH game world Super Perfect Cell.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the anime episode "Awakening," Gohan defeats eight Cell Juniors, even though Cell only created seven. This inconsistency does not appear in the original manga or the "Dragon Ball Z Kai" redub. A possible explanation is that one of the Cell Juniors used Tien's Multi-Form technique to split in two.
  • In the dubbed anime, Cell Juniors are said to have the same strength as Cell himself but with much less durability. This claim is not made in the manga.
  • The Tri-Beam is the only attack that the Cell Juniors use that Cell himself is never shown using. In the anime, Cell having Tien Shinhan's cells is stated, but this is anime-only.
  • In Xenoverse 2 (after the 1.09.00 update), Perfect Cell can be customized with the Tri-Beam Super Skill, allowing him to use it, just like the Cell Juniors. The Xenoverse series follows the anime storyline, suggesting that both Cell and the Cell Juniors possess Tien's cells.
  • The Cell Juniors, Bio-Men, and Saibamen share similarities: they come in groups, are short and about the same height, pose a moderate threat at their introduction, and are easily defeated later. Unlike Bio-Men and Saibamen, however, the Cell Juniors can speak, although rarely.
  • The Cell Juniors are similar to the Meta-Cooler Corps, in that they are miniature clones or duplicates of the original (Cell and Cooler, respectively). Both are also related to the Frieza Race (the Cell Juniors contain Frieza and King Cold's cells).
  • All of these groups — Cell Juniors, Bio-Men, Saibamen, and Meta-Cooler Corps — are artificially created lifeforms. The Cell Juniors are the offspring of the Bio-Android Cell, Bio-Men were created by Dr. Wheelo and Dr. Kochin, Saibamen were created by a Saiyan scientist, and the Meta-Cooler Corps are artificial duplicates of Cooler.
  • The Cell Juniors are considered the strongest of these artificial groups, as they were introduced during the Cell Games. The Meta-Coolers' strength can increase through Rebirth, potentially exceeding the Cell Juniors, but the Cell Juniors have no specific weakness like the Meta-Coolers' Achilles' heel, the Big Gete Star.
  • The Cell Juniors are also similar to Medamatcha's Medas, which are miniature clones of Medamatcha. In Xenoverse 2, Medamatcha's boss, Lord Slug, expresses interest in acquiring Cell Juniors for his army or in obtaining technology to create Bio-Androids like them.
  • In the Dragon Ball Super manga, after Earth was destroyed by Kid Buu, the Cell Juniors are shown living on Earth, implying they were no longer evil or perhaps never truly evil, as they were tamed by Android 17.
  • Android 17's ability to tame the Cell Juniors might be due to a kinship, as 17 was once part of Cell. Alternatively, the Cell Juniors might see Android 17 as a fellow Android.
  • In several video games, a blue Cell Junior palette swap is used as an alternate version of Cell, including "Super Butōden 2," the Budokai series, and the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
  • In Dragon Ball FighterZ, Cell's "Color 02" is essentially a Cell Junior recolor.
  • In Xenoverse 2, after the 1.09.00 Update, Cell (Perfect) can be color-customized to resemble the Cell Junior color scheme.
  • In the first Budokai game, Cell's "what-if" form "Cellin" has a similar appearance and moveset to the non-playable Cell Jr., suggesting that the character model for Cell Jr. may have been intended as a playable character.
