Porunga (ポルンガ) is the wish-granting dragon from Planet Namek in the Dragon Ball series. His Namekian name translates to "Dragon of Dreams" or "Dragon of Law." In Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dende refers to him with various titles like "Dragon of Love," "God of Dreams," "Maker of Dreams," or "Granter of Dreams."

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Porunga is distinct from Shenron in both appearance and demeanor:

  • Physical Build: Porunga has a more brutal, muscular appearance compared to Shenron, with a heavily muscled upper body, including large pectoral muscles, shoulders, arms, and well-defined abs. He has a long, green, snake-like tail instead of legs, giving him a more alligator-like appearance.
  • Resemblance to Naga: Porunga bears a resemblance to the Naga, serpent deities in Hindu and Buddhist mythology.
  • Other Features: He has a large fin down his back, large spikes on his shoulders and head, and two antennae on his forehead similar to the Namekian people. He is also much larger than Shenron.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Porunga's personality has both similarities and differences compared to Shenron:

  • Good-hearted but Temperamental: Like Shenron, Porunga is good-hearted but has a temper and can be impatient. He has a sense of humor, as seen when he joked with Krillin, Gohan, and Dende on Namek, telling them to wish for nothing three times so he could leave if they couldn't decide.
  • Friendly and Patient: Porunga is generally more friendly and patient than Shenron. He demonstrates eagerness to grant wishes, even going out of his way to restore Krillin's clothes as a special service. He shows happiness when Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu are brought back to life and goes out of his way to return them directly to Earth rather than making them traverse Snake Way again.
  • Moral Compass: Porunga seems morally opposed to killing good people. When asked to bring Goku's soul to the Check-In Station in Other World, he refused, as Goku was still alive and this would have killed him. Instead, Porunga informed Goku's allies of his survival. This contrasts with Shenron, who has been more threatening in similar situations.
  • Respecting Free Will: Porunga honors the wishes of individuals, such as when Goku requested not to be brought back to Earth, and Porunga respected his request.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Dragon Ball Z[edit | edit source]

Frieza Saga:[edit | edit source]

  • Revival of Piccolo: Porunga is summoned by Dende and grants two wishes: reviving Piccolo and transporting him to Namek to fight Frieza.
  • Refusal of Immortality Wish: Vegeta demands immortality as Frieza approaches. However, Porunga does not grant this wish. Instead, he ceases to exist because Guru, his creator, dies at the same time, turning the Namekian Dragon Balls to stone.

Restoration and Final Wishes:

  • Revival of Namekians: After Guru's death, King Kai requests Kami to use Shenron to revive all those killed by Frieza, including Guru and Porunga. Shenron grants this wish, restoring the Namekians, Guru, and Porunga. The Namekian Dragon Balls are also restored.
  • Transporting to Earth: With one wish remaining, King Kai requests that everyone but Frieza and Goku be transported to Earth. Dende, the closest to Porunga, makes this wish in Namekian, resulting in everyone being transported except for Goku and Frieza. Frieza’s wish for immortality is not granted because he did not use the Namekian language.

After Guru’s Passing:

  • Porunga's Activity: The Namekian Dragon Balls become active again 130 Earth days later. Porunga is summoned in West City to grant wishes. The first wish moves Krillin’s soul to the Check-In Station, but Goku's soul cannot be moved as he is still alive. The second wish revives Krillin, and the third wish initially sought to bring Goku back to Earth, but Porunga reveals Goku does not want to be brought back immediately. The wish is used instead to revive Yamcha.
  • Additional Wishes: Another 130 days later, Chiaotzu and Tien are resurrected with the first and second wishes, and the third wish relocates the Namekians to a new home.

Majin Buu Saga:[edit | edit source]

  • Restoring Earth and Reviving Beings: Vegeta devises a plan to use the Spirit Bomb against Kid Buu. Dende, Old Kai, and Kibito Kai gather the Namekian Dragon Balls to summon Porunga. They request:
    1. To restore Earth to its original state after being destroyed by Kid Buu.
    2. To revive all those who have died since the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, excluding those with evil hearts.
  • Upgraded Abilities: Dende notes that while Porunga could previously revive individuals one at a time, his abilities have been upgraded to revive groups of beings.
  • Restoration of Goku's Strength: After the Spirit Bomb is formed but struggles to destroy Kid Buu, Dende uses the final wish to restore Goku's strength, allowing him to defeat Kid Buu.

Dragon Ball Super[edit | edit source]

God of Destruction Beerus Saga:[edit | edit source]

  • Separation of Kibito and Shin: Kibito Kai visits New Namek to request Porunga to separate Kibito and Shin, as Shin feels uncomfortable with the fusion.

  • Reviving Piccolo: After Piccolo is killed by Frieza, the Namekian Dragon Balls are used to summon Porunga to revive him following Goku's defeat of Frieza.

Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga:[edit | edit source]

  • Moro's Plan and Wishes:
    • Moro targets the Namekian Dragon Balls to restore his magic abilities. After Cranberry defeats Moori and uses a mind-control device to summon Porunga, the dragon grants the following wishes:
      1. Restoring Cranberry's Health: First wish is granted.
      2. Restoring Moro's Magic: Cranberry reluctantly grants this wish under threat from Moro.
      3. Freeing Galactic Prisoners: Moro's final wish is granted, and Porunga leaves, with the Namekian Dragon Balls scattered across the planet.
    • Restoration After Moro's Demise: Following Moro's defeat, Porunga is summoned again to restore planets and lives taken by Moro.

Dragon Ball GT[edit | edit source]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Namekian Summoning Password: To summon Porunga, the Namekian password is "takkaraputo popurunga pupirittoparo."
  • Language Requirement: Porunga can speak and understand the common language but only grants wishes made in Namekian. This language requirement is a safeguard to prevent misuse by evil beings like Frieza, who could not have his wish granted due to his inability to speak Namekian.
  • Restoration to Death Location: According to King Kai, when Porunga restores a person to life, they are returned to the location where they died. This rule is observed when Piccolo was brought back to King Kai's planet and later wished to be transported to Namek. Only spirits return to the exact spot where they died.
  • Cultural References:
    • In Dragon Ball Z Episode 92, a Police Officer mistakes Porunga for Godzilla.
    • In the 2008 PlayStation game Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, a dragon randomly encountered during room changes introduces itself as Porunga and offers to grant a wish.
    • In December 2015, Ford Motor Company released a parody advertisement for the 2016 Ford Focus featuring scenes from Dragon Ball Z, where Porunga humorously attempts to grant wishes to Gohan and Krillin. After a misunderstanding, Porunga gives them the car instead.
