Rebecca Hawkins
Rebecca Hawkins, known as Rebecca Hopkins in the Japanese version, is an original character created for the Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime, meaning she does not appear in the manga.
In the original Japanese version, she is the youngest person to become the American Duel Monsters champion, a title previously held by Bandit Keith. In the English adaptation, she is referred to as the Intercontinental Champion. Rebecca is also the granddaughter of Arthur Hawkins. She is twelve years old in the original Japanese anime but is portrayed as eight years old in the English dub, later aging to ten during the Waking the Dragons arc.
Appearance
Rebecca’s appearance varies between story arcs. In Waking the Dragons, she retains her short skirt but wears thigh-high socks to cover her legs. She also wears a light blue top over a gray T-shirt and reverts to her original hairstyle of two pigtails. She has blue eyes, light blonde hair, and fair skin.
Personality
Initially, Rebecca is rude and arrogant, looking down on others, including Yugi, and dismissing second place as unimportant—only caring about being first. She also has a habit of talking to her stuffed teddy bear, which she calls "Teddy." Over time, she softens, growing kinder toward Yugi and his friends. She develops a crush on Yugi and competes with Vivian Wong for his attention. However, she does not openly challenge Téa for Yugi’s affection, as she senses that Téa (in the Japanese version) has feelings for Yami Yugi instead.
Biography
Duelist Kingdom
Rebecca Hawkins is the granddaughter of Arthur Hawkins, an old friend of Yugi Muto’s grandfather, Solomon Muto. She encountered Yugi upon his return from Duelist Kingdom, accusing Solomon of stealing her grandfather’s prized Blue-Eyes White Dragon card. When asked how she knew Solomon had "stolen" it, she claimed Bandit Keith had told her. As Solomon had recently been discharged from the hospital and was unable to Duel, Yugi stepped in to face Rebecca in his place.
During the Duel, Solomon recounted how he met Arthur, an archaeologist who believed that ancient Egyptians played an early form of Duel Monsters. Arthur’s colleagues mocked his theories, prompting him to embark on an expedition with Solomon to find proof. However, they became trapped when a tomb caved in. With only enough supplies for one person to survive, they Dueled to decide who would take them. Yugi and Rebecca’s Duel mirrored that very same battle, and Solomon claimed he already knew how it would end.
Rebecca used a strategy of discarding monsters to her Graveyard to power up Shadow Ghoul. Ultimately, Yugi conceded defeat. Rebecca demanded the Blue-Eyes White Dragon card, only to learn that it had been destroyed. Furious, she blamed Solomon, unaware that Seto Kaiba was actually responsible. Arthur then arrived and scolded Rebecca for her behavior, showing her the card Yugi had drawn before surrendering—Soul Release. If Yugi had played it, he could have removed five monsters from her Graveyard, weakening Shadow Ghoul just enough for Dark Magician to destroy it. Yugi explained that he had surrendered on purpose, just as Solomon had done years ago to let Arthur take the last of their water. Moved by the story, Rebecca quickly apologized for her behavior. As a sign of goodwill, Yugi gave her The Ties of Friendship, which she kept as a reminder of the lesson she had learned.
Waking the Dragons
Rebecca and her grandfather returned during the Waking the Dragons arc to assist Yugi and his friends against Dartz. Now noticeably older, she wore glasses and had enrolled in college, surprising Yugi and his friends.
She contributed by researching Dartz’s Three Swordsmen and hacking into KaibaCorp’s computer system to track Duelists via their Duel Disks. Throughout the arc, she continued to express her infatuation with Yugi, referring to him as her “boyfriend” (or “darling” in the Japanese version, referencing Urusei Yatsura), much to Téa Gardner’s jealousy. Unlike a mere playful crush, Rebecca was genuinely devastated when Yugi's soul was taken. She attempted to avenge him by challenging Valon, but both she and Duke Devlin were easily defeated.
After Yami Yugi regained control, Rebecca confronted him, expressing her anger over what had happened to Yugi and demanding that he bring him back safely. Later, she assisted Yami Yugi and Kaiba in breaking into KaibaCorp to retrieve a crucial item. Before Yami Yugi’s final Duel against Dartz, Rebecca wished him luck, anxiously hoping for Yugi’s safe return.
KC Grand Championship
Following Dartz’s defeat, Yugi and his friends stayed with Rebecca and her grandfather for a while. During this time, she participated in the KC Grand Championship, where she defeated the Chinese champion, Vivian Wong, as well as Abe the Monkey Man. However, she lost to Leon von Schroeder in the semi-finals, which greatly disappointed her since she had been hoping for a rematch with Yugi. Despite this, she remained on the sidelines for the rest of the tournament, cheering on the competitors.
At the tournament’s conclusion, Rebecca bid farewell to Yugi, promising to Duel him again someday. She also gave Téa a coy look, teasing that she would miss her.
Dawn of the Duel
In the final episode of the Japanese version, Rebecca made her last appearance by hugging Yugi at the airport, while Téa looked on, visibly irritated.

Decks
Rebecca originally used her grandfather's Shadow Ghoul Deck, which she inherited from him. This Deck focused on filling the Graveyard with Monster Cards using effects like Judgment Blaster to power up her favorite monster, Shadow Ghoul. She also relied on several cards that provided hand advantage, such as Skelengel and Sangan. During her Duel with Yugi, Solomon Muto noticed that their moves closely mirrored his past Duel with Arthur, playing out almost identically.
Waking the Dragons
In the Waking the Dragons arc, Rebecca switched to a Gem Dragon Deck.
Grand Championship
During the Grand Championship, Rebecca used a Gem Dragon/Cure-Burn Deck. Her primary strategy revolved around Fire Princess, pairing it with healing cards like Marie the Fallen One, Cure Mermaid, and Guardian Angel Joan to continuously inflict damage on her opponent. To support this, she incorporated numerous stall cards, including Gravity Bind and Imperial Order, to slow down her opponent’s offensive plays.
As seen in her Duel against Leon von Schroeder, if her Burn strategy failed, she would fall back on her secondary tactic—summoning Diamond Head Dragon to win through sheer brute force.
