Future Mai (未み来らいのマイ Mirai no Mai) is one of the tritagonists in the "Future" Trunks Saga. As the leader of the Resistance against Goku Black, she stands as one of Future Trunks' most trusted allies. Throughout the arc, Mai plays a pivotal role in assisting Trunks and others, demonstrating resilience and strategic acumen. Ultimately, when Fused Zamasu merges with the multiverse, Future Zeno erases it, leaving Mai among the three survivors. Thanks to Whis warning Future Beerus about Zamasu's Project Zero Mortals, Mai now resides in a restored timeline where another version of herself exists.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Future Mai is a youthful, tall woman with fair skin, big black eyes, and long black hair with bangs. She typically wears a long blue jacket, yellow pants, black boots, and a green hat. At the conclusion of the "Future" Trunks Saga, her attire mirrors her present counterpart, with the addition of dark gray leggings. Her youthful appearance results from a wish made by Future Pilaf, which transformed her from a middle-aged woman, as depicted in a special chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga.

Personality[edit | edit source]

In contrast to her present counterpart, Future Mai is a compassionate, selfless individual who values others' well-being. She cares deeply for animals and people, offering food to Future Scratch and ensuring Trunks has enough to eat. She maintains strong bonds with Future Bulma and even Goku, showing respect for their abilities and contributions. Her nurturing nature is evident in her interactions with young orphans Haru and Maki.

As a leader, Mai inspires her troops, boosting morale during battles against Goku Black and urging them to persevere despite overwhelming odds. After humanity's eradication by Zamasu, she grieves but continues to fight, exhibiting courage even against impossible threats. Her optimism shines through when Whis reveals a plan to restore the timeline, lifting her spirits.

Mai’s relationship with Future Trunks is characterized by mutual care and subtle romantic undertones. Despite their occasional teasing and embarrassment over the topic, they consistently prioritize each other's safety. Mai’s bravery is notable, as she faces formidable enemies like Goku Black and Future Zamasu while supporting stronger fighters like Trunks, Goku, and Vegeta.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Mai's life initially mirrors that of her main timeline counterpart until Age 767, when the world falls into chaos due to the Androids. As in the main timeline, she and the rest of the Pilaf Gang are accidentally turned into toddlers by Shenron, who grants their wish for youth in an unintended way. In this timeline, their wish becomes Shenron's final one, as Piccolo’s death shortly afterward causes the Dragon Balls to turn to stone permanently. The fates of Pilaf and Shu remain unknown, but Mai survives the Androids’ rampage and matures into a young woman once again.

After Future Trunks defeats the Androids, Goku Black appears, wreaking havoc on Earth. Mai joins the resistance against him, where she meets Future Trunks. In one mission, she leads an effort to corner Goku Black by orchestrating attacks with her comrades and detonating explosives to collapse buildings onto him. Though initially believing Goku Black to be destroyed, he emerges unscathed and attacks Future Trunks. Mai intervenes with a flash grenade, enabling Trunks to escape. She later tends to his injuries, motivating him to continue fighting as humanity's last hope.

Dragon Ball Super: "Future" Trunks Saga[edit | edit source]

When Goku Black first strikes, most of the human population is annihilated. Survivors retreat underground, forming a resistance with Mai at its core. Despite mounting casualties, Mai inspires the group and encourages Trunks to persevere. After Bulma’s death at Goku Black's hands, Mai remains a steadfast ally to Trunks, sharing scarce food supplies and supporting him emotionally.

During an assault near Capsule Corporation, Mai attempts to act as a decoy to protect Trunks, seemingly sacrificing herself. However, she survives and later aids in the resistance’s efforts to hold out until Trunks returns from the past with reinforcements. Upon reuniting with Trunks, she briefs him on the deteriorating situation and stands beside him as they plan their next moves.

Mai displays unwavering courage in battles against Goku Black and Future Zamasu. She rescues Vegeta, helps the Saiyans escape using the Time Machine, and supports the resistance. Despite her lack of superhuman abilities, she leads the effort to inspire and protect the surviving civilians. Using a powerful bullet crafted by Future Bulma, Mai attempts to assassinate Goku Black but fails, narrowly surviving the counterattack. Trunks repeatedly saves her, and she provides him with supplies and encouragement to keep fighting.

During the final confrontation with Goku Black and Zamasu, Mai and the resistance lend their energy to Trunks, empowering him to defeat the fused Zamasu with his Spirit Sword. However, their victory is short-lived, as Zamasu’s essence begins engulfing the universe. Overcome with grief and rage at the deaths of the remaining humans, Mai lashes out futilely against the incorporeal Zamasu until Trunks consoles her.

As a last resort, Goku summons Future Zeno, who erases the corrupted universe to eliminate Zamasu entirely. Mai, Trunks, and their allies escape to the past just in time. Though devastated by the loss of their timeline, Mai and Trunks are offered a chance to live in an alternate timeline where Zamasu's rise to power was preemptively thwarted. They accept, vowing to build a new life together while cherishing the memories of those they fought alongside.

The day after their decision, Mai receives new clothes and supplies from Bulma. She and Trunks bid a heartfelt farewell to their friends and embark on a journey to their new timeline, hopeful for the future and grateful for the bonds they formed.

Film Appearance: Resurrection ‘F’[edit | edit source]

Mai saves Trunks from Goku Black by using a flash grenade. Afterward, Trunks thanks her, but Mai questions who would save them if he were to die, prompting an apology from Trunks.

Dragon Ball Heroes[edit | edit source]

Sometime after the events of the "Future" Trunks Saga, Future Mai travels back in time with Future Trunks to Beerus' planet, where Goku and Vegeta are training. Future Trunks joins their training under Shin's guidance. When Future Trunks is taken to the Prison Planet, Future Mai seeks Goku and Vegeta's help. Fu appears, claiming to be a friend of Trunks and offering his assistance due to his knowledge of the Prison Planet. Future Mai accompanies Goku and Vegeta on their rescue mission.

As Goku and Vegeta struggle against Cumber's overwhelming power, Future Mai produces a pair of Potara earrings, given to her by Shin before their journey. She helps an injured Trunks escape the battlefield while Vegito battles Cumber. When the Prison Planet is on the brink of destruction due to the escalating battles, Mai and the others are teleported to Beerus' planet by Xeno Goku's Instant Transmission.

In the Universal Conflict Saga, Mai is present when Fuwa arrives at Beerus' planet to inform them about the new threats appearing in Universe 6

Powers and Statistics[edit | edit source]

Tier: 9-C, 9-B with firearms, far higher via Bulma's Parting Gift

Powers and Abilities: Peak Human Strength, Speed, Stamina and Accuracy, Superhuman Durability, Skilled in Hand to Hand combat, Weapon Mastery (Master of Firearms and Explosives), Vehicular Mastery, Supernatural Willpower, Explosion Manipulation (Via Rocket Launchers), Poison Manipulation (Via Poison Bombs), Light Manipulation (Via Flash Grenades), Flight (Via Jetpack) Smoke Manipulation (Via Tear Gas) and Ki Manipulation (Via Shotgun)

Attack Potency: Street level (Leads a resistance group made of highly trained human soldiers and warriors). Wall level with firearms, far higher via Bulma's Parting Gift (Caused a casual Goku Black's face to sting and made him fall backwards in his chair from an unusually long range)

Speed: Peak Human (Is the swiftest human soldier in her group). Superhuman on her motor scooter

Lifting Strength: Peak Human

Striking Strength: Street level (She's much stronger than everyone within the resistance besides Trunks and likely Yajirobe)

Durability: At least Wall level (Survived her own rocket launchers exploding in her face point blank with little pain. Got hit by an attack from Goku Black which created a giant explosion and sent her tens of meters in the air, and survived)

Stamina: Peak Human

Range: Standard Melee Range, Tens of Meters with firearms

Standard Equipment:

  • Binoculars: Future Mai uses binoculars to observe Trunks' battles with Goku Black from a safe distance.
  • Flash Grenades and Tear Gas: She employs these to disorient Goku Black or facilitate her escape. In Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle, Flash Grenade is her Super Attack, dealing damage to enemies. In Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission, her Flash Grenade ability can be used twice per battle as part of Mai's Disruptive Tactics. While it does not deal damage, it significantly increases enemy Charge Impact speed, hindering their attack accuracy.
  • Containment Vessel: Future Mai holds the containment vessel used during Future Trunks' Evil Containment Wave against Future Zamasu. The attack fails due to the absence of a proper seal, allowing Zamasu to escape.
  • Gun: Her primary weapon is a sawed-off Remington 870-style shotgun capable of firing ki blasts. She also wields two semi-automatic pistols resembling H&K USPs. In Dokkan Battle, her shotgun doubles as a grenade launcher, firing Flash Grenades for damage or blinding effects.
  • Motor Scooter: Future Mai uses a motor scooter for quick transportation and ally rescues.
  • Sniper Rifle: She attempts to assassinate Goku Black using a sniper rifle, but the attempt fails. Her sniper rifle fires energy waves, and in Dokkan Battle, it is featured in her All-Out Surprise Attack and Decisive Offensive, firing a powerful .50 caliber bullet.

Optional Equipment:

  • Rocket Launcher: Future Mai uses a rocket launcher as the finisher for her All-Out Surprise Attack Super Attack and during Future Trunks & Future Mai's All-Out Counterattack Super Attack in Dokkan Battle.
  • Jet Pack: To compensate for her inability to use ki-based Flight, Future Mai uses a jet pack in Dokkan Battle and Dragon Ball Legends.

Intelligence: Expert tactician, strategist, fighter, and medic. Has extraordinary leadership skills. She is also an extremely skilled marksman, with her aim impressing highly trained soldiers and hitting her mark even on targets outside an effective range. In Dragon Ball Legends, she protects the biggest outpost of human survivors.

Weaknesses: Always willing to throw her life away to protect others

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Future Mai appears to have severed ties with the Pilaf Gang after their transformation into toddlers, as she never references Future Pilaf or Future Shu or their whereabouts in any context.
  • In the manga version of the Future Trunks Saga, Future Mai recognizes present Pilaf and expresses joy at seeing him. When Pilaf questions her, she cryptically remarks, "To think that you'll end up like that," leaving him confused.
  • A special chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga set during the "Pre-History of Trunks" saga reveals that after the Pilaf Gang's wish for youth, infant Future Mai and infant Future Trunks briefly gazed at each other before she crawled away, subtly foreshadowing their eventual meeting in the Future Trunks Saga.
  • In gameplay footage of the Prison Planet Saga from Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Future Mai is seen levitating alongside Future Trunks and others during battles. However, this is likely a gameplay mechanic, as she is not shown to possess ki-based Flight in the anime or manga.
  • In Dokkan Battle, Future Mai uses a jetpack to fly, emphasizing her lack of ki-based Flight.
  • In Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission, Future Mai's attacks originate from the ground, consistent with her inability to use Flight. During the game's Prep Phase, characters stand on their VR cards, and she is not depicted flying in this phase either.
